I'm looking for something I can use to gain access to my home computer(s), from work or where ever? I have heard of LogMeIn but wanted to know what other options there are. I don't need to be able to connect from my phone and currently I'm only using Windows.

The two I use is Logmein and Teamviewer. There is also gotomypc, but I think it's pay for use. Teamviewer is great for one-shot access but it can be setup for reuse on a daily basis. It will stop you from using it if you use it to much.

I really recommend logmein, I use it everyday, it's also super easy to use. Hell, the thing I like the most about it, is that you can make shortcuts on your desktop like a bookmark for a website. Double click on it and it opens up to your pc. It's also free for unlimited use for personal.

I will second logmein. I use it for my home pc/work pc/work server. Free and works good.

Nice idea but I think this requires actions on both ends similar to crossloop. But this brought to my attention that crossloop has remote access like LogMeIn (free for 1 computer)

  5. +1 for LogMeIn. My friends (at a technological school, in an IT degree) rant and rave about how awesome it is.

  6. Standard Remote Desktop protocol and Apple Remote Desktop work fine, assuming you're willing to punch a hole in your firewall.

Chances are, you already have the software on your computer. No need for clunky third party stuff.

If your desire for remote access is related to content, store it on Google Drive or something.

I only use RDP for internal use or if I'm connected via a secured VPN. I can't do that at my house as I'm not allowed a static IP address for my home. I'd rather use third party programs and run it over port 80.

I really don't think logmein is clunky, setup is smooth (and can be pushed remotely) and I've never had a problem with it. Like I said before, the shortcut option seals the deal for me.

I think you can get around the static ip address in more than one way.
I too only use RDP on local network or over VPN, but currently I don't have anything at home to setup VPN against other wise I would be going that route.
