Minor Internal Bleeding

    Yo.

So this morning I had a routine check-up in the nearby medical center and some blood was taken from one of the veins in my arm.

After the syringe is removed and the cottonball applied to use pressure, you're supposed to keep up the pressure on the vein.

Well, I didn't. Didn't really think much of it until a few minutes ago, when I happened to look a the spot the blood was taken from.

Looks like I have some internal bleeding going on because of my failure to keep the pressure up. I have a roughly 4x2 cm area that is colored deep blue with the stored blood right under the skin.

Now my main questions is: how much of an issue is this? SO tells me it shouldn't be an issue.

Will it go away by itself? Does the old blood go bad and become a health hazard over time? Should I see a doctor about this?

    Any input appreciated.

Moral of the story: When the doctor tells you to keep the pressure up... you do that for longer than 20 seconds, you stupid idiot.

  2. Other than it is going to look really bad for a few days, you'll be fine.

Craven Morehead is full of lies! You're going to need to apply a tourniquet immediately. Leave it on for 3 hours, 30 minutes and then release.

    Just kidding.

If it keeps spreading beyond the local area, you won't be able to stop it.

If it comes to that, you will become a zombie within a couple of weeks.

I read that somewhere on WebMD, but I lost the link.

Cheers Craven. Just wanted to make sure.

And Baraka/Plan9: You should, like, totally put a tracker on me to know my location at any time. Keep checking the news whether any outbreaks occur at the locations I've been to.

At least it's good that I live fairly close to a major military base. But who know if the military here is any good.

It will probably be fine, but you need to keep an eye on it. All that extra dead blood around is going to promote infection. In fact, exactly this thing happened to an old teacher of mine and he has a huge ugly scar on the spot from the flesh that essentially rotted off during the infection. If you keep it clean and covered, probably some antibacterial ointment, you should be able to avoid that fate.

Huh. I was wondering what side effects old blood could have on the area.

How long should I observe and, if it doesn't really reduce in size or color intensity, before I call the doctor?

EDIT: As an aside, I've consumed something like 200-300 ml of Vodka today (I blame the number of Margaritas). Does that actually have an effect on the infection issue?

Well, I'm not a physician, but I would say you need to keep an eye on it until it's obviously healed. From what I understand, what's gong on isn't substantially different than a bad bruise, or any other time you cut yourself, though it will probably be less tender. Basically, you bled but the hole wasn't big enough/in the right spot for the blood to get out. So all the standard stuff about bleeding applies. If it does get tender/inflamed/starts to look funny then I would go see a doctor. I doubt there is really that much blood in there at all, but on the off chance there is (it looks/feels squishy like a water baloon) I would try to have it drained. Other than that, I wouldn't worry about it.

What happened to my teacher is a colorful anecdote and is definitely a possibility, but he's also the only person I've ever heard of having anywhere near that bad a time of it. You probably have better odds of getting struck by lightning or winning the lottery. Maybe worse (better?) than both on the same day.

Are you sure it isn't a bruise? Do some internet research on people who donate blood and the issues that can come up.

I would be more worried about a blood clot, but I'm not a doctor, and it is probably not right. Your body knows how to repair damage, so as long as it doesn't get bigger, I would think it would go away.

  12. the standard of hospitals in the UAE are not as good as in european and australian hospitals. Almost all hospitals work for a profit, as most are privately owned. She-lish worked in a hospital in the UAE that provided shisha rooms and jacuzzis to VIP guests. Go figure.

moral of my story? try to stay away from UAE hospitals as much as possible...without insurance its bloody expensive.

as far as your concerns go, im with hectore on this one. Its nothing unlike a bad bruise.

I'd only get worried if the 4x2cm patch got bigger. I was bitten by a wasp in the UAE while on a hiking trip, and the small red spot became a 30cm x 10cm red, purple and brown patch. The doctor gave me some cream (which was some sort of steriod cream) to put on it and it disappeared after a week. The body is an amazing thing.

Well, at least the good news is that the area doesn't feel like a water balloon, isn't tender, nor does it feel inflamed. Feels pretty normal, aside from looking like I was hit repeatedly in the same spot by a Fight Club member.

See, I tried googling this thing for a while. I learned that bruising from syringes is a very common thing. Nothing else.

Yeah, obviously the medical facilities here aren't the best. Though I hear Healthcare City has some very good ones, including one based on German standards. A bit of a drive, but I think next time I won't be as lazy.

As far as insurance goes, I've got international health insurance from an Austrian company (don't ask why Austrian, it's a stupid story). I don't think I pay enough to get pretty nurses with special skills, but it's a decent amount and should enable access to the best care.

Holy crap on that 30x10cm monster, bro.

Yeah, I'll wait 2 days from now to see what happens. If I suddenly disappear, please let my family know that I love them and, should they see me again, to not let me come into biting range.

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

This is the last thing you would want to do because poking it is the best way to get it infected.
Leave it alone, it's going to resolve over the next week.

When it comes to growing bacteria, a fluid pocket in your body might as well be a petri dish in an incubator. Having it lanced/poked and drained by a licensed professional in a clinical setting would be a the very opposite of the last thing you wanted to do.

Exravascular blood in the forearm does not remain liquid.
If it does you have a major problem unrelated to this little bleed.
Again, the body handles this remarkably well on its own.
Let it do what it knows how to do.

  19. Its only small, the body should absorb it. Mt fried has a lump of blood about the size of an orange on her arm from a dog bite. Her doctor said to leave it, the hospital said to drain it - the vet said its too late for either. They could slice her arm open and remove the blood clot if it really bothers her.

The best treatment option here is to cut off the arm above the point where it is bleeding. Only one way to do this properly:
    0) You must do this yourself. A rusty saw missing a few teeth is preferable. No painkillers or any of that wussy stuff. Would Rambo need any painkillers or help as he extracts 9 bullets (8 of which should have mortal or fatal instantly) from his body with only his knife just to kill all 47 of the nameless soldiers that shot him? Exactly.
    1) Handcuff yourself to a pipe on the roof of a building
    2) Make sure there is horde of zombies beating down the door trying desperately to reach you. I would recommend posting something like this on Facebook - "OMG!! I so have tickets to Justin Bieber!!! But dude man I only have 5 pairs, so you'd better get yo azz up here to get them!" Of course you will need more spelling errors and possibly more exclamation marks as well. 7 out of 6 impartial studies have shown without any trace of doubt that kids who read Facebook rank the importance of a post by how many atrocious spelling and grammatical errors it has, the more the better of course.

If that is not an option for you then just post a thread on here titled "Free beer at <address of building of choice> on the roof!"
That will bring a horde as well. Either way you will likely find Baraka_Guru at the head of the line to either beat you with a 20 pound dictionary as a method to correct your grammar (wearing that blue armband with the dictionary on it) or to bash your head in with the same book just to get to the beer first.
    3) Plan on cauterising the stump on a stove top burner nearby after leaving a bloody trail while narrowly escaping the zombie horde.
