We're not supposed to carry cellphones on us for clinicals. But at yesterday's hospital orientation they told us the story of the student nurse who had been allowed to observe a surgery (which is a privilege) and her instructor got a call from the one of the nurses in the OR telling her to come get her student because she was texting in the middle of the surgery. Not only unsterile, but really disrespectful. Turns out she was texting another student nurse who was in another part of the hospital. Uh, trouble. They both got kicked out of the program. I like my phone, I use it on my downtime, but that was pretty ridiculous.

These are the same people who suffer from anxiety when their battery runs low and don't have an opportunity to recharge it.

Oh, and this maybe? Smartphone Addiction: Managing Your Phone Usage Time

Ha. And the article refers to another interesting book:
The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains: Nicholas Carr: 9780393339758: Amazon.com: Books

I really can't think of any other reason why seemingly smart people would do such stupid things. They told another story of a student nurse who was working with a patient who 'coded' (went into cardiac arrest). In this event, you know, everyone on the unit converges on that room and they bring the crash cart in and try to revive them. The nurse stood there taking photos with her phone while everyone was working to try and save this woman. Then she posted them on facebook. Yeah.

Google is making us stupid. Good thing guys like Lewis Lapham are making us more smarter-er.

    ...

So... the great brass craze of 2013 continues...

I get the whole free market economy supply 'n demand bullshit... but when I place an order on the website and it says one thing and then you charge me nearly double on the card, I'm pretty sure that's a crime.

"The prices went up." "Not before I pulled the trigger on that purchase."

I'ma take that invoice and hold it up next to my online receipt.

Then I'm going to crack some skulls.

    Motherfuckers.

I'm (once again) getting sick of those Facebook posts of warm-and-fuzzy images with saccharine phrases that are essentially false but make people feel better about themselves in spite of the truth, and the commentaries that go along with these posts, like, "It's so true!"

And because I'm a nice guy, I don't post: "Actually, it's not," followed by a paraphrase from the lines of Heath Ledger's Joker.

GeneticShift Show me your everything is okay face.

Got called in for jury duty in the fall. Got deferred because I am a student. They summoned me again last month for March 11. Wrote back that I am still a full time student, and that I will be OUT OF THE COUNTRY the day they have summoned me, so I will not be able to go again. My request was DENIED. Just found out, about to fucking scream. Going to be as calm as I can when I call back on Monday. Want to punch a whole through a wall.

Who submits screenplays to a book publisher whose closest category to drama is poetry?

Speaking of desperate: Some of the saddest cases I see are those who think they'll make a tidy income off the proceeds of their creative writing if only they'd get their break.

Reality: Even if we do publish your book, you should consider yourself lucky to earn out your three- or four-figure advance.

So... I'm a moron. Huge shocker, I know. I just paid well over a grand for a custom reclaimed 1900s barn wood bed because the old lady wanted it. It was was delivered in the rain--uncovered during transit--by people that tracked mud all over my entry way and then assembled it to find that they left one of the important pieces all the way back at their shop. Heh, heh... whoops! I should get that piece sometime next week if they remember it. And they needed to borrow a pencil and a knife and some rags, too. I'm really trying to get into the helping-the-environment and supporting-small-business thing but it's a little ridiculous that something that costs twice as much as it should came in this condition. I could build a better product if I had the tools.

I mean, it has built-in drawers and it's blatantly obvious that the tracks need to be shimmed with washers so they don't derail every time she goes to get new bedsheets. They'll fix that, too.

Godfuckingdamncrapit. I should have just got an Ikea bed and assembled it myself and bought a couple of cases of ammo with the difference.

James Patterson is like Oprah Winfrey and Martha Stewart. These people cease being people and become economic entities. Besides, he's more like an overseer now than an actual writer.

    IKEA Hackers

My husband would never stand for me buying a bed like that made from reclaimed wood. A common refrain in our house is, "I could just build it myself." THEN DO IT, GODDAMMIT.

He forgot hose clamps at the brew shop, and was totally unimpressed by my Clamps impression. You need clamps, I got Clamps!
