Official 2013 NFL Season Thread

Today is the day the new season officially begins on the NFL calendar.

There's already been a couple big moves announced unofficially yesterday. Percy Harvin is being sent to Seattle for a 1st round pick. Most Vikings fans I know are irate over this. But he didn't seem terribly happy there, has never turned in a full season, and I think this makes a ton of sense for Seattle.

The other big one is Anquon Boldin going from Baltimore to SF. I've always liked him, he's a tough dude. It was basically a salary dump, since it was for a 6th rounder. Baltimore had to do it for cap reasons, but it was a smart move for SF IMO.

    Any early predictions? Thoughts? Hopes?

I'll be very interested to see what Denver does. Peyton has a small window left, but he looked awfully good by the end of the year. Hopefully he stays healthy.

When does the NFL draft happen?

The draft starts in six weeks. The NFL Combine (basically the "tire kicking" event for all the prospective draft picks) already happened a couple weeks ago.

Today was the day teams could start making trades for the new season, thus the new thread for this year.

  7. I believe the Steelers are gonna lose Mike Wallace....to the Dolphins.

    Buffalo just released Ryan Fitz.
    No loss there.

Just because he died last year at 93? Man that is harsh.

Didn't they just sign him to a huge deal less than 2 years ago? I wonder what the cap hit on that is. I'm assuming not much was guaranteed.

EDIT - Found it. $10M in dead money.

Ryan Fitzpatrick released by Buffalo Bills - NFL.com

    Somebody will overpay him. Again.

Yeah they are able to spread the cap hit over 2 years.
I'm a serious Bills fan and have watched him closely for several years. He does not have the arm to be a successful NFL QB and I think that will be readily apparent to any team looking at tape of him.
My bet is he takes a much smaller contract to be a backup somewhere or he finds a new job.
Dude is a Harvard grad BTW. Should be able to find something.

I like making the picks when the week comes up they're playing.
But I don't typically get involved before regular season play.
There are so many manipulations, decisions, variables, etc...it never comes down to what you thought.

My traditional team is the Raiders, but they have to redefine themselves, get settled.
Where I live now, I tend to lean to the Ravens.

Perhaps this year, I'll be able to get back into it more. Not as much distractions or obligations.

The Ravens have lost their fucking minds. Ellerbe to the 'Phins (woot woot), Krueger gone, and Boldin for a 6th rounder? You don't even know if a 6th round pick will even make the team. Talk about lack of value. I've been a fan of Boldin since his FSU days

My 'Phins are lookin' better and better. Now they just need an O line, special teams, a tail back, a tight end, a defensive end, linebackers and corners.

    Fuck.

In all fairness, Boldin's cap number this year was too high. I've always liked him, but it was almost impossible to keep him with their cap situation this year. If they hadn't got a late pick thy would've just had to cut him.

Welker to the Broncos for 2yr/$12M. Brady has to be pissed considering he just reworked his contract to help the Pats keep talent.

I'm not so sure that Welker is going to be that big of a deal in Denver. Yeah the dude can catch passes out of the slot, but last season he dropped more passes than I had seen in the last 3 or 4 seasons combined. Maybe it was my imagination but catching from Peyton is far different than catching from Princess. It certainly won't hurt Denver, but I don't think it makes them a super bowl team.

  19. Adding Reggie Bush doesn't get me excited about the Lions. They've jettisoned half of a porous defense and should ne spending money on filling those holes. No wow factor in the DE and safety they signed and they will likely draft offensive line help. At least baseball season shows some promise here in Detroit.

Steven Jackson just signed a 3-year deal with the Falcons. Two Beavers splitting time in Atlanta--I'm glad to see two alums doing well. Quizz looked good this last season and I hope that continues to be the case.
