In Italy, Benito Mussolini made the trains run on time.
Not to mention the Stalinist Soviet Union, comrade.

War is not good, especially for the losing side.
But war is not without collateral benefits.

Sorry, but I don't suffer fool dictators easily. I like my dictators to have a famine ON PURPOSE, not by accident.*

So in conclusion, the world is a really shitty place.

Thank goodness for sex, intoxication, Hollywood movies, spectator sports, trashy novels, and video games!

What a good time to use the US Drones and really kick some N.K. Ass. I bet even China would be pleased with us and then move in for a final blow.

Are you talking about the aircraft, or the State Department diplomats?

i will have you know that the dear leader was, among other things, a genius of sports: it was a result of his personal skillz that the nk football team advanced into the second or third round of the world cup. and the dear leader had a real penchant for getting lots of people to move pretty cards in synch with each other. and the dear leader liked to look at things:

    kim jong-il looking at things

for being the subject/object of the greatest blog in the history of the interwebs certainly militates against just walking into nk drones and dicks all a-waving and stuff. and this is without even getting started on the juche idea, one of the great works of conceptual art of the contemporary period.

    No he didn't.
Use drones to do what? And the last thing China wants is for the NK government to fall and leave them to deal with millions of refugees who don't speak Chinese flooding into rural parts of the country.

I'm still amazed how funny, but true this remark is.... I'm not a war-monger but I believe if we had 600 drones in the air around the DMZ the N.K. idiots might start to shut the fuck up. But hey, that's just one dumb idea from a midwestern hippie gal. Okay?

What else could we do....Oh yah, we're sending the B-2s, The Stealth Bombers.

Hmmm and now what will their response be? Just asking. Is it our way to say Fuck You? or Bring It On??

I honestly believe more people, including the US, need to to say Fuck You to dictators.

well, if you want to play that game, remixer, you might have to think about the structure of the american national-security state. it was set up in 1948 as a mechanism to by-pass the messiness of the "democratic" process so as to enable a response to stalin that operated at a parallel speed. so what you have here, in the land of the free and the home of the brave and all that shit, is a pseudo-democratic political regime that turns over servants of the national-security state every four years. so obviously the united states is in some moral position to oppose dictatorship. clearly. dictatorship is a relic of an outmoded model of domination, colonialism to neo-colonialism. you know. efficiency and all that. of course none of this registers with those proud to be american assholes. perfectly nice people blah blah blah that don't even recognize the base-line nature of the reality they live in.

Thank you Remixer! Perhaps that's more to the point than anything ANY of us have been able to state. It's not like this is a new military statement there...haven't we, the US, been openly based there for....um....60 years or so? And we've been for the economy in SK all this time. They like us and know we're helping them remain free. (No wonder that little fascist pig Un hates us, BTW)

It's like a silent Mexican standoff. The NK.s just want us to get "jiggy" and escalate and waste billions of bucks more.

Indigo Kid, I think you missed the part where we've been openly at war with the North Koreans for 60 years. We've been based there because we're - technically - fighting a war on the Korean peninsula.

Maybe you also want to remember that we propped up our own puppet dictators in South Korea for a good 50 years. The South has only had a democratically elected leadership for about 10 years.

I'm guessing that you considered Hugo Chavez a dictator. If you did, you should go back and look at the last election returns from 2011 and see if that fits your definition of dictator.

The US does need to say "fuck you" to more dictators. Including the ones that operate in our interests, like Mubarik in Egypt or Fahd in Saudi Arabia. Or you could ask the new Pope about how friendly Pinochet was with the US. But that's the point of roachboy 's post above.

Roachboy, I understand your line of thinking and I believe I already had a digression with a number of TFPers, including you, regarding the operative nature of a nation's security forces, and how sometimes decisions need to be made that are not accepted or understood by the wider population. We will remain at our positions, but I am most definitely aligned with the thinking that the security establishment has often enough completely fucked up in their methodology, which includes the installment and empowerment of dictators.

Taking other (innocent) people's freedoms/lives away in order to maintain the comfort of your own leaves behind a horrid taste in my mouth.

As with most establishments and organizations, belligerent "at any cost" idiots are scattered all over the hierarchial foodchain.

And for the record: Fuck Yous need to be distributed to both allied and hostile dictators, within and without our own governments.

I've just been thinking about the structure of the American national-security state. After considering some of the many flaws of pseudo-democratic political regimes, the national-security state (American style) versus the national-security state (Soviet style) and even granting @roachboy's vision of the flawed reality that we live in... I would still choose, one-thousand times out of a hundred, to live under a softly repressive pseudo-democratic regime than to live under Marxism as history shows it worked in practice.

Interestingly, that is the same choice made by the Poles, Czechs, Romanians, Latvians, Bulgarians, Azerbaijanis, and a dozen more that I won't bother to list. Oh, and the Russians as well.
