Man of Steel: Superman rebooted

Given the director, producer, and writer, this has a decent chance of being watchable... now hopefully they'll stop rebooting Spiderman for a bit.

 

This one doesn't interest me very much. I was never a huge Superman fan to begin with and setting aside Chris Nolan's Batman trilogy DC has been falling way short with their movies compared to Marvel.

It could surprise me but this is one I will probably wait for the Blu-ray release to watch.

 

I dunno.... I'm kind of interested, I'll definitely go see it, but my expectations are pretty low. There hasn't been a good Superman movie since 1982. I have never understood what was so damn difficult about it. The last one sucked donkey balls, though the visuals were nice. Zack Snyder's done some interesting work, and Henry Cavill at least can act...it is not impossible that this could be good. But I just don't trust them not to fuck it up somehow. You'd think they could just find a good screenwriter, put him in a room with John Byrne and Jeph Loeb, and hand the resulting screenplay to an all-star team, like Marvel usually does. I mean, a very high percentage of their stuff rocks, and their batting average seems to be improving. Seems like DC could take a few lessons from them....

 

I'll definitely see it. I discovered Superman when I was eleven, and though I later chose Thor and Green Lantern to be my adult role-models until I got to be about forty and, beginning to reach maturity settled for Judge Dredd, my early teens were filled with possibilities of suddenly acquaring powers, becoming popular with girls, and being good effectively.

Dean Cain in the long running TV series became my favourite, because I got to know him and Lois in the more day-to-day details that typically get missed in films. He did not spend much time dipping into the grim and grit that I knew from the comics, and I am looking forward to this latest version adding some of the temple-vein-pulsating angst that I associate with the Man Of Steel of my childhood.

In recent years, I have been watching the DC Animated Superman films. The characters are already established, but I enjoy the development that comes from internascine wimble-bimbling between members of ... er .. is it Justice League America? No back-stories, but plenty of side-stories.

Regarding this latest one, I notice that the golden "S" logo is shown as being somewhat grimy and pitted, and the 'Superman Bound' scene might indicate a move into richer territory than the typical "Oh Bugger ... out comes the Kryptonite ... he's screwed ... oh, no he isn't." I'm reasonably hopeful.

 

I wasn't too interested in this movie. Just watched the trailer and I have to admit I've changed my mind a bit. Still not one I will go to the theatre to see but a definite Blu-ray rental.

 

This sums it up perfectly for me, along with the hobbit (part 1,2, 3 I suspect) -

 

The Brits seem to play better American roles than actors actually born and raised in the country. I have heard but can't say from watching it personally that Hugh Laurie nails the accent for that show House, he certainly sounds believable in the Stuart Little films.
Which reminds me, my favourite part of that generally awful Total Recall remake was how Kate Beckinsale switched from her American accent to her natural Britsh when she goes from playing Doug's wife to showing her true self.

Anyway, I will watch this at some point. Blu-ray on a 40" screen sounds like a winner to me.

 

The new 'Superman' was on BBC news last week. He was telling children who are victims of bullying at school that they should feel sorry for the kids dishing it out as they were probably being bullied in a much worse way at home. Seems he was called 'fatty' at boarding school so knows all about it.
After watching that interview a few times, I shall not be going to see the film. Have to say - make mine Marvel.

 

I went and saw it on Saturday. I thought the first 1 - 1.5 hours were fantastic. Really well done with great flashback sequences and whatnot.

The last hour was all CGI and they lost me with that.

 

Noone seen this movie yet? No opinions?

 

I've seen it and it was FANTASTIC.
Costner is fantastic in his small role (screen time wise) as Pa Kent and Diane Lane is perfectly cast as Ma Kent.
Amy Adams does a fantastic job as Lois. I love the route they went with her

and I love that she uncovered the truth about Clark on her own

Michael Shannon was a serviceable Zod, but sadly he's no Terrance Stamp. He doesn't do a BAD job, but he's not just not particularly memorable either (Antje Traue however is fantastic as Faora).
What about Cavill? It's a different Superman than most people are probably used to, it's a Superman who isn't sure of himself yet. What truly sold me on Cavill though is the look of glee when he first flies. It's a fantastic scene.
One of the biggest complaints I've heard is that it's not the Donner films. And don't expect it to be, anymore than you should have expected Nolan's Batman Begins to be like Burton's Batman.
The other complaint I've heard is

about the end. Where Superman kills General Zod. A bunch of people on the net have a huge issue with the fact that he kills Zod because Superman "doesn't kill". Except of course when he does. Like when he killed Doomsday, or when he killed GENERAL FREAKING ZOD when he first showed up post-crisis.

I was nervous about Snyder. I'm not exactly what you would call a fan of his. 300 was great, and Watchmen was... well probably the best Watchmen that would ever be made but hardly the masterpiece of the comic but Sucker Punch was bad and Dawn of the Dead was HORRIBLE (yeah I know I'm in the minority on that one but I truly hated the remake). But he made Man of Steel work for me.
It's not the best comic movie to come out in the past few years, but it's better than most.

 

I thought Man of Steel was just short of okay. Not quite terrible but ultimately unspecial. Serviceable, even. Three days since I've seen it and not much of it has stuck with me. Mostly, I remember being annoyed by the plot and the rhythm of the movie and Amy Adam's emotionless performance as Lois Lane. Everyone knows Superman and Lois will fall in love, everyone expects the kiss in the end and when it came it still felt contrived and unbelievable. Eh.

 

Ugh, gritty reboots.

...like Superman in handcuffs.

I wonder what's after the superhero craze.

 

What bothered me most about the movie was the battle in Smallville and especially the battle of Metropolis.

They absolutely destroyed the town, and the entire city of Metropolis which has a population similar to that of New York City was quite nearly flattened completely - there would have likely been thousands upon thousands of human deaths. Maybe in the 10's of thousands.

Superman, above all, always had a massive regard for human life and safety. His choice to engage the fights in these two locations and be a part of the massive destruction is what lost me - it seemed so out of character.

He would have gone out of town to somewhere relatively safe and prone to less bystander deaths. Hell in Smallville he could have gone 2 blocks to the left and been in corn fields.

The special affects were phenomenal, truly were - but they could have still had an awesome fight but in a place that would be more believable to the character in my opinion.
