Oh, there are rules. Don't give me that. You can't just be naked anywhere with anyone.

Let's explore the ramifications of various states of dress as an adult in assorted situations.

This was inspired by a conversation at work and furthered from a comic done by The Oatmeal:

    ...

Current Rules of Being Clothed/Naked as an Adult
    Circa 2011 CE

    T-SHIRT BUT NO PANTS:
    - Woman in shirt with no pants: cute, sexy
    - Man in shirt with no pants: hideous, childish

    DRESS SHIRT BUT NO PANTS:
    - Woman in dress shirt with no pants: your wife
    - Man in dress shirt with no pants: 15 minutes late

    DISPLAY OF CLEAVAGE:
    - Woman in low cut top: usually sexy
    - Man in low cut top: usually Guido Bob

    PANTS BUT NO SHIRT:
    - Man with pants and topless: just chillin'
    - Woman with pants and topless: weird

ZIP-UP TOP WITH ZIPPER HALFWAY DOWN:
    - Woman in halfway zip-up: flirty
    - Man in halfway zip-up: rapist

WEARING SUSPENDERS (who does these days?):
    - Man with no shirt and suspenders: Neo Nazi
    - Woman with no shirt and suspenders: stripper

IN A GROUP OF THREE OR MORE OUTSIDE:
    - Man with no shirt: probably sweaty
    - Woman with no shirt: Mardi Gras

    FIRST THING IN THE MORNING:
    - Man in bathrobe: trashy / dork
    - Woman in bathrobe: cuddly / available

    SOCKS WHILE HAVING SEX:
    - Woman with socks on: cute, playful
    - Man with socks on (especially black socks): likely leaving money on the dresser

It was also discussed that women can get away with nearly any absurd combination of clothing/lack thereof and have it be considered fun / cute / whatever. Men totally cannot get away with the same outfits unless they're some tan-in-a-can Greek god Chippendales dancer doing a calendar shoot or something. I mean, take the scarf/mittens/bikini contests in Key West. Only women can get away with that crazy stuff.

    ...

Okay, TFP... give it to me:

What are your thoughts about the rules of being clothed and naked as an adult?

Bring me your preferences and gripes: good, bad and ugly. Let's talk casual and formal, lingerie and sweat pants, skinny jeans and baggy trousers, Spandex and hoodies. Let's talk no clothes at all. Let's talk awkward situations. Embarrassing stories and appropriate pictures should be posted.

The "Group of 3 or more outside / men" category needs a "cold" option, which indicates that they are likely to have the name of a football team painted across their chests.

I, for one, wear suspenders. I don't like belts. I'm not naked much, either.

The girlfriend of my old roomie and I would sit around the apartment in just pants all the time. It wasn't weird, it was just more comfortable! Women topless outside in groups of more than three may also be at a pride parade. Mind you, pride parades are something entirely different now, aren't they?

  5. Group nakedness may also include skinny dipping. I have plenty of awkward stories involving family and unintentionally observed nudity, but I'm debating whether to post them.

I will say it totally sucks playing strip poker and you are completely naked and everyone else has just lost their socks. I think someone stacked the deck.

    This thread is hilarious.

I like being nude. When given the opportunity, I am nude, but I am generally polite about it. If I know people are going to be home, I wear clothes. In the combos listed above, I would say I prefer to wear bottoms but be topless. I have some Hello Kitty short-shorts that go well with being topless.

I am nude almost the moment I walk in my door. People look in my windows... their problem....

But I do fit ALOT of the stuff above.... not all positive.... thanks for having my confidence take a hit Plan.... appreciate it.

I'm almost never just naked, even alone. Except when it suits a particular purpose (ex showering). I suppose I have too many body image problems for that. My wife is the complete opposite, clothed only when required for a particular purpose.

As for the suspenders comment, have you ever worn suspenders, sir? I got a pair for Christmas and I never want to have to wear a belt again.

Suspenders are where it's at. They're so freeing.

I'm nekkid around the house when going to shower or coming out, kids and hubby may be present, but I don't go naked around other people, unless in sauna or swimming pool shower.

In hot weather I can wear bras and shorts on home yard, it's enough to keep father-in-law further away... neighbours aren't very close. Since it's rather cold most of the year here, I have to wear something...

I guess it depends how you were brought up, and what you are used to. At uni the American girls in my first year halls would wander around in just their bra and pants. I found it kind of awkward, I didn't know where to look (the boys however would just stare!). I tend to wear lots of clothes all the time! I feel naked in a knee length skirt and tend to wear shorts underneath. On summer holiday this year my BF encouraged me to wear a bikini - I felt completely vulnerable and spent most of my time hiding in the sea or sat hunched up!

This reminds me of a conversation on who can/should wear skimpy clothes. For example should bikinis/ mini skirts be made in large sizes?

I am of the rule that if I am in my own house, I should be allowed to be naked/shirtless. Then again everyone in chat knows that.

Generally not less than underwear, and that only briefly. With teen kids in the house, they don't want to see me naked. For that matter, ALMOST everyone doesn't want to see me naked. It's getting depressing :p

  15. In other words, most any form of female nudity is acceptable, most any form of male nudity is not.

I can live with that. :D

This has been made clear in many movies; naked women are sexy, naked men are funny.

With a roommate, I don't get to be naked inside except for in the bathroom and the bedroom. Living in town means I can't be naked outside, period.

I miss living in the sticks. Much more freedom to be naked.

I am a total goober, so I don't subscribe to any fashion sense or mores other than "don't show your wang to people who don't want to see it."

Other than that, I have done all of these, and I'm proud of it.
