I couldn't find the old thread so...

I think Matt Smith has done a great job and I like Steve Moffat's tone. Series 7 is is a ways off but what are you hoping for and what do you expect to happen?

I like Amy and Rory a lot but I'm ready to see them go. Their personal lives have been such a core part of the overall story that I think its well played out. I'm looking forward to the new companion and I hope she will bring a fresh direction.

Personally I'm hoping for more stories out in space and in the future.

I am soooo glad they went with an older actor this time. Peter is a more "proper" age in my opinion. David was a bit young and Matt's even younger age was a bit hard for me to accept at first. I sincerely hope that Peter uses a Scottish accent rather than a general British accent.

I still rank Tom Baker and Pertwee above any of the recent Doctors.

Have you seen today's Google doodle 50th anniversary tribute to Doctor Who?

    It's pretty cool. Google

    The Google doodle was awesome.

Did anyone see the 50th special? I was up at 3:50am to see it... damn that was early. Going to pay for it.

I am going to be honest... I didn't love it. I liked it.

What I did love was John Hurt. Oh what I wouldn't give for a full season (or three) with him as the doctor. To be honest, I've been a fan of his since I was kid he brought such gravitas the role.

I need to think about the whole thing, and see it again with greater wakefulness, before I say much more.

    What did you think?

I've only watched the 2005-plus incarnations of Doctor Who but even I was a bit mystified why all the previous Doctors seemed to get short shrift. I loved seeing David Tennant again and it was kind of fun to watch him and Matt Smith riff off one another. I'm not, nor have I ever been fond of the current companion, Clara. She just seems like eye-candy--no real depth. I always liked Amy--it could be a redhead thing as I liked Donna, too. I disliked Rose (always--too whiny) and at first, when I thought it was her tonight I groaned inwardly but was OK with her being the Wolf or the Conscience of the Moment.
John Hurt was outstanding. He seemed to immerse himself in the Whovian-verse with ease.
I like the reset with Gallifrey storyline and I think I'll like that Smith will go out with the Doctor attempting to find his frozen-in-time, MIA home world. It never seemed right that the Doctor--no matter how noble his intent--committed mass genocide.
Good special effects, nice aerial shots of London--it was a good stand-alone episode--not epic--but satisfying enough.

  9. I had to work, so I missed Saturday's event. A couple of local theaters are playing it Monday night, but my evening has been planned for me. When does the DVD get released?!?!?

I loved Rose, and was slightly disappointed to not see a Rose/half-Doctor clone interdimensional mashup, just so I could see Rose again. But I agree with your opinion of Clara, and seeing Billie Piper back, even in a different role, was enough.

The interaction between Matt Smith, David Tennant, and John Hurt really was spectacular. I haven't been a huge fan of Matt Smith's Doctor, thought the fact that I loved David Tennant's may have had something to do with that. The reference to "The Doctor who regrets, and the Doctor who forgets" kinda put a new spin on it for me though, and sort of explained the current Doctor's somewhat manic activity as someone who is running away from his past.

I liked the way they just hinted at Capaldi, and I know it's bashing on his decision, but Christopher Eccleston's absence was noticeable. He should have at least made a short post-regeneration appearance, either just to stand there, or to deliver a line or two.

Overall, I liked it, and I look forward to where the series is going.

I have to say, I loved it myself. It was fantastic seeing Tennant back, and the way he, Smith, and Hurt played off each other was amazing. I do wish Eccleston would have been there. The play off of the the 4 of them would have been mind blowing.

I have to disagree with the review though. The whole point of the special was to cap off the events sense the relaunch of the show. I've been watching the good Doctor sense I was 8 years old, and I feel that trying to jam the older regenerations in would have felt like forced fan service. They touch on the past, present, and future of the Doctor in just the right amounts for me. That being said, I REALLY hope they do a few more episodes covering the John Hurt Doctor. There are not words for how awesome he was in the role.

I've now watched the special 2.75 times (had to go to bed last night, couldn't finish it a third time).

I like it a lot more now than I did the first time I watched. I now do see it as a summation of the reboot series and an opportunity to clean the smudge of genocide from the Doctor's memory. It also serves as a launching pad for Doctor 12. The new Doctor is an older Doctor and it makes a lot of sense given the angle played that he has been younger in an effort to not "be an adult" in the face of his actions.

I hope they spend a bit more time with U.N.I.T. and while I have enjoyed a solo Doctor in a Time Lord free Universe, I am looking forward to new complexity that can come from re-introducing Gallifrey back into the Universe. One question: there is a rather large Dalek presence out there. If Gallifrey returns, doesn't that just mean a new Time War?

On that note: I was disappointed with the depiction of the Time War. My wife put her finger on it, she noted that it just looked like any other war. A Time War should have been more... I wanted to see all of time and space on fire. I wanted to feel the weight of centuries of war where the Time Lords had lost their way and used methods so immoral and over the top that it would drive the Doctor to do what he did... the street fighting scenes and the council meetings simply didn't convey they this. It just didn't feel big enough, sad enough and Universally horrible enough.

    Otherwise, I did enjoy it.

I finally got to see it last night. It took some computering on my husband's part to get it streaming plus time to watch it :)

John Hurt is amazing. I'd watch anything he's in. Seriously. I'm still convinced that one of the best things about 1984 the film is John Hurt as Winston.

Loved seeing David Tennant again. I'm not a big Matt Smith fan, and haven't watched the show as much as I used to since he's been the Doctor. David Tennant can butter my bread any time he likes. I think they achieved a lot in the time they had, story-wise.

One thing I discovered through watching this is that I apparently need to acquire my husband a Tom Baker Doctor scarf.

I'll just add that I think they nailed it. I loved all the fan service and how well everything was tied up in the end. I can't wait until the Christmas special and look forward to the 12th.

Have any of you watched the making-of docudrama An Adventure In Time And Space? I was surpised how emotional it made me, especially the scene where the original TARDIS design comes to life. It made me appreciate how important the show has been for me my whole life.

Every time I've watched it, I've liked it more.

I think it played to the strengths of each regeneration and how while they are the same "person", they are different stages of that life and make different choices. Seeing that play out, and more importantly, helping to bridge the coming of Capaldi was very smartly done.

I have yet to decide about Clara - I know she seems most jealous of River Song in the last episode with her, but sometimes her relationship with the Dr. feels like "we're just friends but we're both secretly crushing on her". For someone who so recently lost so much, it's a bit over the top. The same could be said for the last 3-4 episodes of Tennant though.

Tennant's last line gets me every singe time.

I loved the 50th anniversary special. Had a friend with BBC america who recorded it for me and got to watch it on a proper big screen rather than a itunes download or worse on a free streaming site.

August is going to be a loooong wait. I do hope that Peter uses a Scottish accent for the Doctor. David generally only sounded Scottish in his emotional speeches, especially when he started to roll those r's.
