Eraserhead (1977), directed by David Lynch. Definately the weirdest movies that I've ever seen....but....I need to see it again because I last saw it in '77.

One of my neighbors is a big fan of Terry Gilliam films, I need to borrow Brazil from him.

Fitzcarraldo. I won't deny that I love Werner Herzog, though.

Wings of Desire. I watched this when I was 16 or so in German class. It was a bizarre experience. It's less bizarre with subsequent viewings.

One of the very few movies I've ever started that I couldn't finish watching. I keep meaning to go back and finish it, but it's been about a year now of looking askance at it in my Netflix streaming queue.

  4. I cried a LOT at the end of Big Fish, but I had just lost my father.

Brazil was incredibly weird! And I liked it, strangely...

Terry Gilliam has a very unique and strange style. Brazil was probably one of the more unusual ones he's done. I'm thinking of Time Bandits, The Fisher King, and Twelve Monkeys. They all had a certain level of weird.

Hm. The Fisher King is one of my all-time faves and I'll watch 12 Monkeys anytime.

    Weird:
The Exorcist-- Just a gross, odd movie. I saw it when I was 12 y.o. And priests sort of weird me out like clowns do.
Planet Of the Apes-- The ape masks looked cheap and fake. I couldn't get past that and C. Heston's histrionics.
The original Invasion of the Body Snatchers--Loved the remake; the original was cheesy to the point of having no point.
The remake of The Fly-- Got under my skin--big-time. Jeff Goldblum seemed like he wasn't acting acting crazy--he was really crazy. Unsettling as hell.
Soylent Green-- Again, Chuck with the histrionics.
Apocalypse Now--I can't sit through it. So. much. weirdness.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind...Lost me at the mashed potatoes.

Wings of Desire is also one of my favorite films.

One which hasn't been mentioned yet is Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.

Some of my friends were fans of the Twin Peaks television show, which I had never seen. But the movie was a "prequel" to the TV series, they said, so I didn't need to be a fan to understand it.

They were wrong. It was one of the most baffling films I have seen.

I didn't enjoy it at all. And it was just endless, something like three hours long if I recall correctly. (Okay, I just looked it up. Wikipedia says the movie is only 57 minutes long. But it certainly seemed to go on and on and on and on.)

I read later that parts of the movie were acted backwards, including the spoken lines, and then played forwards, just to impart extra weirdness.

I thought, well, maybe this is supposed to be kind of a comedy. But a comedy that features a brutal and graphic father-daughter rape-murder scene?

David Lynch's most baffling movie to me was Inland Empire. Three hours of straight Lynch brain. I'm still not sure whether i liked it or not.

I watched Twin Peaks on TV. If the reports that came out well after the fact were accurate, Lynch took a hike from the TV series after just a few episodes, something the network managed to keep under wraps.

In retrospect some older movies seem pretty cheesy; one thing to consider is when they were filmed & released. If the folks behind Planet of the Apes had known in advance that they had a sure hit, they probably would've put more money into the costumes & make-up. IIRC, POTA wasn't a low budget film, not by 1960s standards. 2001: A Space Odysey is a yawner (to some) by today's standards.

On a completely unrelated note--Check out the scene in All That Jazz where the twirling dancers are constantly changing, starting at about the 4:20 mark. That ain't computers, that was done by humans.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai....delightfully weird. The science geek in me loves a hero who's a nuclear physicist, surgeon, and rock star.

Oh, I almost forgot about Crash, the 1996 film by David Cronenberg. It is just weird, but that might have to do with the use of J.G. Ballard for source material. Thigh scar sex.

I was going to say that the hallmarks of Gilliam's films are that they're weird as balls, and that they are also enjoyable despite that (or maybe because of it).

Then again, I think I'm one of about eight people who actually enjoyed The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus so I probably have awful taste.

Moonrise Kingdom wasn't weird exactly, just quirky. Just like every Wes Anderson movie. They are all great though, partly because they're done in such a bizarre way. I also have to agree on 2001: A Space Odyssey. I saw it when I was young and I had no idea what was happening the whole way through.

The Saddest Music In The World. Directed by Guy Maddin, written by Guy Maddin & George Toles.

A bizarre little low budget movie. A beer baroness, a Saddest Music contest, a father, his two sons, one nymphomaniac singer, and a missing wife.
