That's not me in the pic, but I'm here.

    Go Ducks. :D

It's a whirlwind tour. Flew into Portland last night and drove to Eugene, breakfast at 6th Street, now sitting in the Mo Center pregaming. Driving back to Portland tonight and flying out in the AM.

Let me know when you graduate to big boy pants and cheer for an SEC team. I'll give more respect to a Vandy fan than any PAC 10/12 team.

Rocky Top, you'll always be home sweet home to me......

What is the difference between the Pac 10 and SEC? Bigger schools or it is more of an West coast/east coast thing?
I am even more clueless on college football than with the NFL stuff but your post has piqued my curiosity.

  8. It's regional rivalry, conference identification, intraconference rivalry, interschool rivalry... there are multiple levels of fun!

ps: Oregon consistently has the UGLIEST uniforms in organized sports!

I have to vote University of Idaho Vandals for that from what I have seen. The colours are hideous and the mascot not much better.
I think the cougars are not much better, but I do tend to have kneejerk reactions to dislike local teams wherever i have lived outside of Oregon.

Disliked the Jaguars when I lived in Jacksonville and I never have even followed that football business.

The SEC is the most dominant conference in the game at the moment. And has been for the past decade. In the last 10 years, the Big 12 has won one national championship, the PAC 10/12 has won 2 and the SEC has won the rest. The SEC is made up of Southern schools, primarily Deep South, and we play the game faster. There might be a corner cut here or there, but it's for the betterment of the sport. And we're some of the most rabid fans of any sport on the planet. For instance, one of my high school friends will not buy gas in the states of Florida or Alabama - he lives in Georgia. I know of a couple that missed their daughter's wedding because it was scheduled during a Tennessee/Alabama game - they said that she knew when the game was when she scheduled her wedding and she could have picked an away weekend or a nonconference weekend. The mothers of the kids I went to school with not only knew all of the players' names but the backups too. And where they were from and whether or not they had any younger brothers that might later go to UT.

I didn't go to the University of Tennessee - I could have gone for free but opted not to - but lots of SEC fans didn't attend the school they cheer for. It's something you're born into. Case in point - my oldest likes to say he's a Green Bay fan because he knows I like the Bears (because of Willie Gault, the first Vol player I ever knew personally). That's fine, and it's all in good fun. But if he says he's a Gator fan or a Tide fan, it will stop being funny really fast.

College football fans do seem to more rabid/devoted than the NFL fans.
If I won tickets to the Superbowl/big bowl game I would seriously sell them for maximum profit before going to such things personally.

I actually went there because my buddies are die hard fans. I usually root for Iowa first and Oregon second, but I'm by no means a hardcore fan.

However, I will say that thought the SEC fans are rabid, they are also probably the worst to go overboard. My buddies went to Dallas for the LSU game. They tried to be low key about being Oregon fans because they were so far outnumbered and neither are the type to be troublemakers. They were still cussed at, harassed, had drinks and ice thrown at them, and were even asked to leave a couple bars in Dallas by LSU fans because "we don't want your type around here". They just kind of shook their head at the lack of class.

I actually find that surprising. I've had many conversations with fellow SEC fans - of multiple schools - in the wake to the Giants fan beating and the 49ers fan shooting. Pretty much all of us agree that similar things would be pretty much impossible in the SEC. You don't see fights between rival fans - to the contrary, I've been invited to tailgates by complete strangers while wearing my gear at their stadium. I've been heckled during games - and given it right back - but usually whoever is sitting around the loudmouth is going to tell them to shut up.

I've been to Tiger Stadium in my Tennessee gear before, and it was a pleasant experience, depsite losing. They must have exiled all the dickheads to Texas. Which explains a lot if you think about it.

Obviously this is based on anecdotal evidence only, but they said it was a horrible experience and claimed they were trying to avoid confrontation when possible. They said virtually every LSU fan would yell "TIGER BAIT!" when they walked by, and that that was about the nicest thing they had happen. In the parking lot of the Oregon game this Saturday they bumped into someone else they knew that had went to the game too (not with them). One of the first things he said when he found out they were there was to remark at how aggressive and vulgar the LSU fans were.

That's kind of rich, because I've heard of the same thing happening to Beaver fans at Autzen.
