Politics Why so much violence?

Discussion in 'Tilted Philosophy, Politics, and Economics' started by bow35, Mar 11, 2014.

On facebook earlier today we had a discussion on left-right politics. To sum up we came to the conclusion that left wing radicals who lack skills of protecting their cultural heritage produce right wing radicals that terrorize the innocent. Anyone else with an explanation of the machinery of violence?

THE REAL PROBLEM IS THE RADICALISM IT SELF..RIGHT WINGS IS RADICAL BY NATURE, I THINK WHAT IS WRONG IS TO REACT ACCORDING TO THEIR

Man, I love me some violence.

What's the question? I assume it's political given the subforum. Are you suggesting that because Billy's parents are Pussy Liberals that Billy will grow up to be a Hardcore Blue/White-Collar Gay-Bashing Woman-Slapping Welfare-Decrying Conservative?

Since I predict that this thread is going nowhere fast, here's an interesting nugget on Liberal Vaginas and what they need to do to be less like... well, all the detestable things that they are now.

I don't really like binary political titles--they're too polarizing--but I am totally for calling people out for being pussies.

I don't think the conflict nessesary has to be between Billy and his parents. I was more thinking of the left and the right movements politically, how they fuel each other like jing and jang. I ask myself if politics is possitive at all.

Your theory doesn't allow for the concept of moderates. Therefore I see nothing to discuss.

Plus, the amount of violence in the world is decreasing, not increasing.

Very true, the only reason it is noted more is because media emphasizes it.
    If it bleeds, it leads.

And unfortunately, in the entertainment industry, not only does sex sell...but violence even more.
Not for sexiness, but for excitement and conflict.

No need to beat me over the head with it.

That's my point. I'm a moderate. I'm on neither the left nor right. Am I violent or not? You'll get different answers depending on who you ask.

Violence isn't distinguished by nor is it predicted by one's place on the political spectrum. Violence is caused by ignorance, hatred, pride, jealousy, desperation, anguish, substance abuse, etc.

Radicalism is often connected to violence, and so is the reactionary mindset, but violence isn't a prerequisite of these things.

To examine the causes of violence, we need to look deeper.

That was a joke in reference to the violence...actually, I agreed with you fully.
Sorry for the misunderstanding. Don't beat me for it. ;)

rogue49 Isn't media exposure of violent images just another form of violence?
Baraka_guru That's what I'm trying to do (go deeper) and my thesis is that if some sell out a the cultural heritage of a certain nations, some of that same certain nation is gonna be violent. Politics.

Oh, like Russians, Germans, French, Italians, Bohmenians, Turks, Spanish, Algerians, Indians, Zulus, Argentinians, Americans (ad infinitum) are always going to be violent?

Your thesis is either unsupportable or so simplistic that it is worthless. There is no "cultural heritage" that is more prone to violence than any other. There are only the actions of individuals who not only feel the pressure of that cultural heritage but also economics, sexual relationships, opportunity, etc. So "some people" of ANY nation EVER CREATED with no exceptions ever are going to be violent because some people are always going to be violent regardless of where they live or grew up or any other outside influence.

No, I don't think so really...because the media pushes sex, sob stories and other things that will get your attention.
While there is a noble side to news...in the end it is a business and they're trying to get you to buy/watch/listen.

Violence is just that, and while true that certain cultures currently have issues, it fluxes through time.
The US has had certain times of increased violence too, as with many others.
Most tamp it down sooner or later. Because a productive society can't continue for long promoting it, otherwise it eats itself.

It's just that we weren't aware of as much violence elsewhere.
Communications have improved, so we hear about it, when we wouldn't have before.
Ex: I wouldn't have heard about a Malaysian plane going down back when I was growing up...if anything it would have been a brief blurb.

The world IS getting better, it just doesn't happen in a noticeable manner...it's broad, chaotic and global.
"The Rational Optimist" shows this...as well as sites/books like "Freakonomics".
Most remember just the negatives, not the statistically good.
Ex: You don't remember you just had a good day...you remember when you just stepped on a tack that made you bleed.

However, I will say we have some work to do...and some way to go.
