I've found some decent carb helps with the digestion. Like a wheat english muffin...or non-white toast.

As your body ages, it sometimes can't digest fats like it used to...another component is needed to help buffer the intake.
I sometimes have gas difficulties with things like steak. (and didn't in the past...)

Don't get me wrong, the protein is still good...you just have to do with another food with it.
Try a boiled egg sandwich instead...or when you eat the eggs...have a piece or two of bread with it.

    Yesterday was OK.

Had 2 boiled eggs for breakfast on the way to work.
1130 was lunch roast beef samich on wheat bread. Mayo and spicy mustard. Celery sticks with ranch and water.
230 snack was crackers and water.
Home at 645 dinner was a hamburger in the oven with american cheese on white bun with Mayo and ketchup and mustard and a few chips. And glass is sweet tea.

It was a small step. I think.

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

    You're getting there.
Keep some leaf lettuce or an avocado in the fridge for the next burger you make. They make the burger even more yummier and help you get some of the plant material you desperately need.

You're taking the right approach by slowly adding some healthier foods. Try to add something at least every few days.

    A couple of thoughts:

Have a piece of fruit with the eggs. Some fruit is stupid expensive right now, but that should change as the weather improves. Bananas and apples are still pretty affordadble.
Make sure the wheat bread is 100% whole wheat. There are many "wheat" breads available, and many of them are only marginally (if at all) better than white bread. Store brand bread can save you some money, we buy the Kroger 100% whole wheat bread.
Try something more substantial for your afternoon snack. There are crackers available made from rice and/or crushed nuts. They're very tasty, but again price is a factor (we try to catch them on sale).

    We're pulling for you, Ralphie.

To add to this - if you buy locally grown things in season, then the price should be lower (e.g. for me locally, apples are just coming into season - they are cheaper to buy now than buying apples at the height of summer, as the summer apples are shipped from the northern hemisphere. This is bad for 2 reasons - they cost more AND they are picked earlier so they can be shipped from one side of the earth to the other. Basically, I'm saying don't go shopping thinking "I must buy bananas" :)

    Yep.
    Nuts are an excellent protein.
But just like anything else, don't eat too much.

Nuts are great! I usually eat an ounce of almonds for breakfast on the days I teach.

Last year I signed up for an organic fruit/veggie weekly delivery. It was great and they included recipes for the items in the box.

Did you say you were in Metro ATL? If so, and you want info on the one I used, let me know.

Also! Butternut squash makes a great French fry swap. They totally squash my cravings.

    Butternut Squash Fries

Pair that with a lean beef or turkey burger wrapped in lettuce leaves, mustard, ketchup, onion and you've got a delicious meal that can help you break the normal burger/fry trap.

Nuts are a great snack, or even a light meal substitute. If you're not yet eating them, try to start with unsalted ones. I started with the mixed nuts with salt, and began adding unsalted nuts to the mix until I got used to the unslated ones. And I didn't make even one salty nuts joke :D.

I just eat raw almonds. They sell them in a 3-lb bag at Costco, and it's the best price I've seen.

We get large bags of raw almonds at Sam's club for a great price. They used to sale large bags of raw cashews, but I haven't seen the large bags in quite a while. I can get small bags at Fiesta Mart, but they ain't cheap.

Someone previously mentioned stir-frying (I need to find the comment & quote them). It doesn't sound like you're at that point yet, Ralphie, but I strongly encourage you to consider stir-frying in the future.

Actually, I keep a cheap jar of unsalted peanuts by my desk at work. ($6 for a large can at CostCo)
It helps me if I'm having a spontaneous craving or have gone over my eating schedule a bit. (helps during those meeting/fiasco days where you can't get away)

I don't know about anyone else, but I burn off food fast, not my body, but in energy...so I need to eat approximately every 3 hours.
Plus it affects my mood/demeanor, getting edgy, flustered or agitated if I'm "bottoming-out" ...so I'll eat something before going into a negative or politically sensitive situation.
