DAKA DOING VERY NICELY, THANK YOU

Well, here I am again back to my FLIP PHONE...
I had a SAMSUNG GALAXY III for about 4 months, I hated it from the moment I walked out of the store...
I'm retired, don't work, have nowhere in particular to be at any time and only use the PHONE to make and receive about 5 calls a day....
Am I the only OF (if you don't know ask me) who hates all the technology, I think I'll probably have to keep our old (2006) cars...the new technology of Smart Drive or what ever they call it is over my head.
Shit, when I retired in 1999, there were NO computers.....etc, we had pagers (remember those?)
On line banking?? are you kidding, I send checks!

I don't quite understand the direction you wish to go with this thread, but I have some observations.

Personally, I love my Galaxy S4. I've actually been encouraging my mother (57) to look into the Note3. She loves her iPad, and would love to have a smartphone, but is concerned about the screen side relative to her "chunky" fingers (her words, not mine) on the iPhones, so I thought maybe a phablet would work for her since she carries a ginormous purse everywhere. The newest Samsung phones have an easy mode. On the flipside, it's an entirely different environment in Android.

My dad is 66 and has been using electronic banking since it's been offered by the banks. He only writes a handful of paper checks a year; instead, he gets online and has the bank send the doctor or whoever a check on his behalf. Saves postage. He has to fight Mom for the iPad.

Having worked with a lot of people over 50 through the years regarding technology, I've found that people are most willing to learn when they have a good incentive to. An old coworker (also 66) learned to use a smartphone so she could watch video messages her daughter sent of the coworker's granddaughter. I have Facebook friends in their 70s who have learned how to Facebook in order to keep in touch with their grandkids. If you don't have motivation to learn to use it, no, you won't learn to use it. I find it enjoyable, so I always want to play with the latest and greatest, especially since I have to teach digital natives.

My feelings on phones and technology in general is mixed. I keep a "dull edge" when it comes the latest and greatest. Just bought a PS3 in the past month or two, and not likely to upgrade to the PS4 for at least 5 or 6 years if not more.
I have Samsung Intensity II phone which is in the middle of the road tech wise. One of those smart phones sounds "cool" but way too damn expensive for me on monthly costs alone and more importantly a complete waste for me. If I figure out a way to raise another $40-50/month I still might consider getting a fancier phone. Androids are snazzy but I do like the free light meter app for the iphone/ipod and already have an ipod touch so that could be a factor if that day ever comes. No experience with the android light meter apps but those screencaps did not look as good in a search just now.

As to where I'm headed...just bitchin, and I probably don't think it was worth the learning curve for the new phone
One of the reasons I retired was CAD (Computer Aided Drawing) as an architect for many years using pencils, I just wasn't ready for the technology.
I have a laptop at home and I guess I just don't need the INSTANT GRATIFICATION of researching "stuff" on the fly, the Galaxy is in my drawer........that's all (and the bill went down $45 a month..damn ATT)

    I AM THE INTERNET.

    ...

Technology is fantastic, but it comes at a cost. You have to keep up if you want to stay relevant, and it never stops iterating.

I love my smart phone. That shit is Star Trek level tech, and it just lives in my pocket and goes with me everywhere. It is mandated by my employer that I carry one, but I'd have it even if that weren't the case. Then again, given my profession and personal inclinations it isn't really surprising. I love technology and electronics and all the greatness they've allowed us as a species to achieve. It only goes up from here. Remember what 1993 was like, and then imagine what the world will look like in 2033. The very idea is terribly exciting to me.

And cheques? Like, paper? Are we back in the twentieth century all of a sudden? I haven't written a cheque in years.

  6. I resisted, but my family insisted and I got my first flip phone. Then they were mad because I would not text, so I got one with a QWERTY keyboard. Then my job changed and I got this smart phone. Always dragging my feet, but eventually going for it.

Now, my phone was broken when I went to Florida and I was going bonkers!

Yeah I love my HTC One X, even though it's last year's tech, it's just snappy, quick, beautiful screen, does pretty much everything I want it to do. I got it brand-new on Ebay for $210, plus a 2-year SquareTrade warranty (SquareTrade is awesome and so worth it, they've saved my ass several times, no questions asked, after buying used crap on Ebay that died after a few months to a year, like my first One X which was used). The only other phone I would want would be a Galaxy Note II or Note III, because I'm a whore for giant pretty screens. I too used to requireQUERTY slider-out keyboard phones, like my previous Droid 3, but the giant screens have made on-screen typing bearable. My Mugen Power 3200mAh extended battery jacket keeps me going for literally days on end without having to recharge, too, and that's important when your phone sucks battery life for its giant screen.

I don't want to have a whole big "Internet: Pros and Cons, Blessing or Curse" debate here because it's been done to death elsewhere, but I do love it because it enables my rabid curiosity. I always want to know about the weirdest, most random things, and I'm only a Google search away from a How-To video or an extensive expanse of research and reports on almost anything you can image in terms of science, culture, etc. Sometimes it's just to satisfy curiosity, sometimes it's knowledge I apply to real-world stuff.

As for online banking, I love that stuff, and I HATE that my stupid landlord company makes me drive all the way to the stupid bank and stand in line, then acquire an old-style paper cashier's check, then drive 25 minutes in the opposite direction and sit through obnoxious traffic to physically deliver it to their office. I love instantaneous banking/electronic transfers, and my rent is the only thing left in my life that still involves paper transactions. Why can't they just take PayPal like normal people in 2014?

[EDIT] - Forgot to mention the One X is nigh-invulnerable due to the polycarbonate housing and Gorilla Glass II screen; watch and be amazed...

My Samsung s3 is supposed to be gorilla glass 2. However, when it landed face down on a road that had been chip sealed a few months prior, it most definitely did shatter. Three distinct spots, with interlaced cracks. It also had a plastic screen cover film which would have only increased, however slightly, the protection. And it has a thin case around it. So I would still be careful with it.

I just got my Nexus 5 in the mail today. I'm in love. So done with my broken iPhone 4. I kept it limping along far too long. Happy to have something fully functional.

My first smart phone was a google branded Nexus S (the letter, not a 5) and I loved it. Unfortunately, it died after I went out in a rainstorm without decent protection. Upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy S3. I'm less of a fan of Samsung's software, though loving the phone. My wife has an iphone 5 and the screen just looks so tiny (I don't want anything bigger, though)

I keep telling myself not to upgrade to the Nexus 5. I like my Nexus 4 but it's not wowshinynew anymore.

I've resisted temptation so far. At this point I feel like I might as well wait for the next generation. We'll see if I can hold out I guess.

I WILL NOT GIVE UP MY FLIP PHONE.....(says the retired OF)
I't s a damn phone, ...well actually I am not being fair, being long time retired, not having to be any particular place at any particular time, my phone is just used to talk to a few people and for calls on my CRAIGSLIST ads....(and my ads read PLEASE NO TEXTS, DO NOT LEAVE A MESSAGE CALL TILL I ANSWER...so if you wanna' buy something don't try to text or leave a message, I won't call you back....(hmmm, what an attitude, comes with being an OF, I just don't give a s**t)

  13. I got my S3 two years ago in August, and I have no plans to upgrade any time soon. There's no real technology on the newer phones that interests me enough to consider upgrading, and my S3 is still just as zippy and fast as it was when I first got it, and that's good enough for me.
Might invest in a high-cap battery, though. It does get kind of old having to plug my phone in every night (and then regretting the morning after I don't do so).

I'm bummed I can't get the Nexus 5 on Verizon. I love my Galaxy Nexus, but it's on its last legs.

My friend/coworker got an S3 as well, and the exact same thing happened. How can the Gorilla Glass II be so weak on the S3's..? Maybe they tempered it differently or laid it more thinly over the screen..?

Regardless, I have never, ever seen any model of phone break more often and more easily than the iPhone 4 and 5 series models. They really need to work on that.
