Turning over the staff

Late last year I was hoping that @the_jazz was going to be able to help me with this difficult task, but we never got it moving. I’d like to turn over the staff and get new staff members from the current active community. In order to do this, I’m going to remove some people from staff who have not been as active as in the past. I hope they take little to no umbrage to this action and understand that it is done in the interest of getting the community involved and invigorated. In no particular order, I’m removing @MSD, @amonkie, @Lish, and @roachboy from staff. Thank you for the years you put into this space. It’s not an easy thing for me to do, but here we are.

I’d like to reinvigorate the community, and the only way to do it is by giving others the opportunity to shape and grow this space. I’m asking the remaining staff, @Charlatan, @Baraka_Guru, @Tully Mars, and @genuinemommy, to help pick out some new staff members to mentor and mold. I hope to fill the staff openings within the next 45 days.

@Martian will be doing what he’s been doing, which is backend server stuff. I’d like him to get more involved in moderating, and this is an appropriate time for him to step up and do so if he still wants to. He and I talked about it several months ago, but it never got pushed to the top of things to do.

@Baraka_Guru will be promoted to admin to help assist me in some of the decisions that may need to be made.

With that, I’d like to ask people in the community to apply for staff/moderator positions.

The simplest requirement is being here daily and posting a new topic every other day on average (a goal of three or four topics a week) as well as contributing to and fostering discussions in active threads (or perhaps reigniting older threads). Can you do that?

Why do you want to be a moderator?

What discussion topic(s)/forum(s) would you specialize in?

If you could change one thing here, what would it be? Why? How?

Please send a PM directly to me and Baraka with subject: Applying for staff

We have several applicants being considered.

I'd love for YOU to send in an application. Don't think that you can't or shouldn't.

If I wasn't swamped with internship, dissertation, and trying to graduate, I'd be will to help out more than currently. I'm sorry.

@noodle. Totally understand. You have good reason. Still I was kinda hoping we could call on you or @snowy to replace me when I go bonkers, fall off the grid, and become a goat-herder... Stupid PhD stress.

The idea does interest me, but I suspect my busy schedule in that pesky Real Life ™ would lower me on the list of candidates.

I'm smack dab in the middle of PhD stress and massive dissertation crisis, so I'm about to take up a job herding cats. It would be easier!

Just how demanding is modding likely to be? Don't y'all spend plenty of time here as it is?

For some people it isn't about the time, it is about the mindset you are in when visiting a space. If you are a member, you can view this as a place to have fun, be entertained, learn, interact socially, share thoughts/ideas/emotions, and to escape for a few minutes. Once you put on that mod hat, if you are taking it seriously, that last one isn't always an option. And it always seems like the drama you have to deal with strikes at the moment you least feel like dealing with it.

It may seem like a minor difference. And often it probably/usually is. But it is a difference that is important to some.

Yes, but there is a certain level of responsibility that comes along with modding. Even though I'm on randomly throughout the day, there are times that I don't have the luxury to stop by for a few days at a time. When I start studying for the EPPP in the fall, I won't have time to dedicate to this place. It's just not humanly possible. I wouldn't want to wear the mod hat if I couldn't be a productive member in the future. This place is supporting me while I'm away from my face-to-face support system. All hell is going to break loose when my internship is over and I start studying for licensure. This place will be, unfortunately, a luxury for awhile. And, I couldn't, in good conscience, apply for a mod position.

Okay. I met a guy who helped investigate the explosion of Pan Am flight 103, which scattered debris and more than 200 bodies across a fairly wide area around Lockerbie, Scotland.

PTSD was a serious problem among the investigators and others tasked with collecting these items.

He explained, "When it's your job, you can't look away."

Hopefully nothing that serious (I've had to deal with a member committing suicide and other members blaming someone on the board for it before, which was kind of heavy for an internet space), but yeah, that general principle at work.

I'm kinda in the middle of some stuff right now or I'd volunteer.
Maybe down the road a bit but not right now.
I wouldn't be able to do the job properly and give it the focus it deserves.
