The rules of this game are simple -All work posted must be made by MS Paint (for the Windows users obviously). Not sure what the Apple environment offers for nearly useless limited graphic programs but this one might be somewhat close to the MS option, if not more feature packed just judging from the screencap alone.

Personally I had to search for the paint program in Win Vista just to begin with. The lack of basic essentials like layers, layer groups, quick masks, etc. was an instant challenge but here is my first "masterpiece".
The inspiration for this thread came from the atrocity that Damitall posted recently showing a "sunset"

I had a nice one of a mountain silhouette in the distance and a fading highway in the foreground.

Can't find it anymore...probably on the HD I still have that I'm always planning on recovering.
    That was 7 yrs ago.

MSpaint is good if you're willing to take the time on it. (use all the tools and magnify certain parts to work on each part)

No doubt. My frustration level with the lack of layers is high with that program. Inkscape/Gimp/etc are much higher on my list if I feel like playing around in a non-PS program.

Actually, some may say that's part of the challenge to see what good stuff you can make given the limitations.
Kind of like a monochrome painting...what can you do with one color...and shades of it (so black or white mixed in)
Or making a 3D image from simple ink stippling.

    Me?
I just use whatever I have when the mood strikes me.
So, if I happen to be on MSpaint...then I get really painstakingly detailed about it...which is funny, I'm not usually for such tedium or task.
Most of the time, I'm a lazy bastard.

    Here's a good MSpaint B/W I found (not mine)
They did great on the face, then trailed off a bit on the effort in the clothes.

or this is even better and in color...

Personally, I like the MSpaint porn. Oh, the originality. ;)

That kind of thing is incredible. Thought about looking for those kind of examples before posting the thread but went with my own craptastic creation.
I lack any real ability when it comes to drawing freehand/sketching and I think that translates to my frustration with attempting something like those examples. Much more inclined to capture an image with a medium I understand better like a camera.

I use MS-Paint all the time, but I always have an image to start with. Here's a quick political poster, based on some bathroom grafitti I saw years ago. (The eyes belong to Hugh M. Alcorn, Sr., when he was a young Connecticut state rep in 1903. His son, Hugh M. Alcorn, Jr., went on to be chairman of the Republican National Committee in the 1950s.)

I reworked my TFP avatar using MS-Paintp; I made a blog post about that.

(But I also use Google's Picasa image software for adjusting lightness, color, contrast, etc.)

Hmm, I can do better than that. Second try?

Fair enough, but you shouldn't discount yourself.
Art is relative...and your own effort in different media and methods are likely no less.
There is art with photography too.
Even more so with modern tools, including MSpaint as @StreetPattern noted above.

I also believe that people tend to think that art is just "whipped up" but often it takes hours, days, weeks
and often they come back & forth on it...adding as it hits them.

Who knows how long it took the work above to be done.
I've seen miniature oils that are painstaking...or 3D art that's incredibly detailed.

Just like you mentioned layering...most art is building...bit by bit.
I find the key is the result, not the process.
They're often not doing it professionally, so there's no need to turn it around fast again & again.

Working with MS Paint or similar programs lacking layers is akin to using a blank piece of paper and the utensil of choice. With enough skill, time, and patience you can create anything you desire.
You obviously cannot edit that first layer you added 47 steps back in both cases, and the finished result can be incredible in the right hands.

The spray can works well for "leaves at a distance".

On that note, I found this page on Facebook doing the obligatory search when I saw the section quoted.
