There is always that song that becomes the song of the summer. Sometimes there are a couple songs that fall into this category.

Some examples of what I'm thinking of:

    Last summer:

This one went on into fall:

The summer before that (my turning-30 song; I should note the lead singer of fun is my age):

What are some of your favorite summer songs? What is this summer's song? I'm still waiting for one to really catch my ear.

I feel like I've had Calvin Harris's "Summer" shoved down my throat as a summer song by being used for bumpers for the World Cup, which is, in my mind, the exact opposite of what a summer song is. Things I look for in a summer song are: organic media attention, crossgenre radio play, and eventual ubiquity. For example, I knew that this song was going to be one of the songs of the summer a couple years ago when it got picked up by both the local pop station and the "timeless rock" station.

I'd say Lorde's "Tennis Court" could be in the running if it were more upbeat; however, I love the lyrics; they're very teenage-y, and while the teenagers I work with would deny the sentiments of the song until the ends of the earth, I find they're pretty true.

This song came out a little early for a summer song, but I think it hits all of the buttons:

In the second it took the videos to load, I said to myself, "I bet one of those is "Steal My Sunshine." You're so Canadian, @Baraka_Guru.

    Well...does he like butter tarts?

    Thanks, @redux

That's the one I was thinking of but couldn't remember off the top of my head. It was a summer song of my youth.

But, @snowy , fear not: There is a Canadian connection. The track was released the summer before the departure of Zal Yanovsky, co-founder, singer, and lead guitarist. He was busted for marijuana possession in LA as a Canadian citizen (go figure it). To avoid being deported, he named his dealer. Consequently, he was ostracized by the music community and so quit the band. He later retired to Kingston, where he opened one of the city's most popular restaurants, Chez Piggy.

My father even repaired his furnace once.
