Just picked up Game of Thrones after seeing an ad for the series on HBO. I don't have HBO, and generally if there's a TV show/movie based off a book, I like to read the book first anyway.

Only a few chapters into (only have time to read about one a night) and it's pretty good so far. I'll wait to proclaim it "better than Lord of the Rings" as many Amazon reviewers have until I have at least finished the first book. As it is, so far I believe they're two completely different stories that happen to share the "fantasy" setting and we should not be comparing the two. :)

You will soon find that they are quite different stories and in more than one way are at different ends of the fantasy spectrum. The comparison (at least from critics I've read) is mostly in terms of the scope, i.e., epicness.

All things considered, I think Tolkien would have taken issue with some of the aspects of the series.

That said, the series is as successful as it is, in part, because it's different from Tolkien. The Tolkien derivatives have been done.

Finally made it through the second GoT (or is it SOFAI?) book. Loved the first one. Second one was a bit flat but I've read others commenting on the odd numbered books being better than the even ones. *shrug... Guess I'll find out for myself eventually...
That said, delving into "The Hunger Games" before going back for GoT book 3

Reamde by Neal Stephenson. It was finally released Tuesday, got it in the mail that day. I'm still in exposition, not sure where it is going yet.

I just bought Ansel Adams' autobiography and am patiently awaiting time to read it for hours on end.

Right this second I'm just perusing through John Harrington's Best Business Practices for Photographers. It's a surprisingly entertaining read.

Just finished Tom Rob Smith's trilogy

    1 - Child 44
    2 - The Secret Speech
    3 - Agent 6

I actually read the last book first. Was so good I went back and read the other 2. Didn't matter. They are stand alone winners.

Now reading (or should say - slogging through) Edward Rutherford's "Sarum". My 85 year old mother insists I read it before she dies. Oy vey, what's a daughter to do?

I can now (finally!) get back to reading for personal reasons.

I'm currently finishing Gormenghast, the second novel of the trilogy.

I'm currently reading (well listening to the audiobook at work) Rob Lowe's Stories I Only Tell My Friends. I am absolutely fascinated by it. Rob Lowe narrates, and he's such a natural storyteller. It's delightful.

Finished it yesterday. It doesn't have as much heavy thinking and theory as his other recent books; this is more of an action novel. I still enjoyed it. At about page 250 you figure it is heading into the conclusion, but then you remember that there are another 800 pages to go. It doesn't let up.
