NFL 2014 season thread: The good, the bad, & the ugly.

The title pretty much says it all. I'll get things started.

The Texans totally sucked against the Cardinals on Saturday night. The Texans' defense, which was probably going to the only good (relatively speaking) thing about the team in '14, looked completely out of sync.

To make things worse, little johnny looked fairly good in the Browns loss to the Lions.

 

Hard to get excited about pre-season games. Different coaches have different agendas, different points of emphasis. They are evaluating talent and ability to function within the system. I have to believe this or the Lions would be near intolerable to watch. I have no interest in another season of settling for field goals and relying on last minute heroics.

That said, hey, we have a distraction from our slumping Tigers!

As for Johnny Football, I'd like to see him with the first-team offense against a first-team defense that has game planned for him. We won't know about him until that situation plays out. ATM, he is nowhere on my fantasy radar.... that's what really counts, right?

 

I just wish there weren't 4preseason games. 2, ok maybe 3...

 

I am taking my kids to a Bills "Kids Day" pre-season game. Very excited.

I think for the Bills it comes down to whether EJ Manuel makes progress or not. They are putting a decent D on the field and have more targets for Manuel on O, so he needs to make it work. I have my doubts.

 

I'm sorry..

 

The debate in Washington is if they are the Redskins or the Washington football team.

 

The Texans need at least eight preseason games; not sure it would help them.

The Raiders will be better than the Texans this year as well. Something some people tend to overlook: In '12, at about mid-season, Schaub was the 5th ranked QB in the NFL. Of course that doesn't mean squat if he continues to plays like he did in '13. With no disrespect intended, Davis' passing away might be one of the best things that happened for the Raiders.

 

THE DOLPHINS WILL PROABLLY BE BETTER THAN THE TEXANS THIS YEAR. JUST SAYING

 

Every team in the NFL will better than the Texans on '14.

In the first preseason game, on a scale of 1-10 with ten being a great performance, the Texans were a -5. I and many Texans' fans would've been happy with a +2. I don't care about "it's only a preseason game," the Texans were abysmal. They did nothing, other than a couple of individuals showing some flashes of potential.

EDIT--In the postgame press conference, BOB looked shellshocked, which isn't surprising. The bad news is two days after the game he still looked shellshocked (not what you want to see in a HC)..

 

THE FALCONS ARE ON HARD KNOCKS ON HBO. NOT SURE IF THATS GOOD OR BAD

 

The Falcons should be feeling just fine after the game on Saturday.

 

Hmmm.....did the Texans really improve that much in a week, or are the Falcons really that bad?

I hope that little johnny gets his ass beaten senseless tonight.

 

So nobody really cares much about the preseason.

I learned something during the Texans' game on Saturday, because of their 2-14 record in '13 they get first shot at any player waived by another team. This could prove interesting, especially for Case Keenum and maybe (hopefully!!) Randy Bullock.

If a decent QB prospect shows up on waivers, I can see the Texans waiving Keenum. Heck, he might even clear waivers and be available to be resigned if need be. I'm Keenum fan, but unfortunately he didn't show much on Saturday as far as making the plays that needed to be made, despite having decent stats. After six years of college (he played four years & set all kinds of passing records) and two years in the NFL, he hasn't shown the required get-it-done ability.

Randy Bullock.....maybe I'm picking on him, but I recall his slump in '13, he totally sucked. With the thousands of colleges in the US & Canada that have football programs (not to mention soccer players), and the dozens of FG kickers who almost made the roster with other NFL teams, it can't be that hard to replace Bullock. Maybe the coaches know something that I don't know .

 

Folks in St. Louis probably care about pre-season about now.

 

I always liked Jeff Fisher, still do. Losing your franchise QB in a ps game pretty much sucks.

 

The Texans finally made the move for Mallet, the former back-up QB for the Patriots, so it's goodbye to Keenum. I hope that Keenum makes it with another team. I don't see Savage getting the starting nod any time soon, but I can see OB itching to see what Mallet can do; Fitzpatrick is on the hot seat. Hopefully Smith's knack for IDing good players will be reflected in the waiver picks the Texans made.

I'm glad to see that Travis Labhart made the practice squad, he showed some potential in the preseason games.
