I don't even pretend to be as knowledgeable on the subject of anime as some of the folks here so I was a little surprised to not find a thread on the subject.
Most of my experience was old school stuff and the major movie releases.
Lately I've been marathoning anime series on Netflix and Amazon so I'm just starting to catch up.

My latest series is Soul Eater.
Although you have the standard teenage characters in an academy it's run by Death itself and one of the students is his son.
Death has even taken a kind of comic appearance and voice because as he explains his former look always scared the kids too much.
The kids are divided into meisters and weapons (people who can actually turn into living weapons).
They hunt down people have become a certain kind of evil (serial killers and the like) and witches.
There are all kinds of adult themes explored as well including divorce, self control, and child abuse.
The art style is unique and fun with the sun and moon being stand outs.

So are you an anime fan?
    What got you started?
Any shows that just stand out above the rest?
Any themes that you notice (blood as a weapon seems to be real common) or ones you could do without?
    What draws you to anime?

I was getting an EEG and as he was hooking up the leads the conversation went from science fiction to anime which the technician wasn't familiar with at all.
I tried hard to describe why it was so cool and finally my daughter wearily spoke from the corner of the room, "Give it up, Dad."

Have you ever tried to sell someone on anime?
How did it go and what did you say?

Uh, yeah, I'm an anime fan. I've watched a lot. My husband tends to marathon shows; sometimes I get sucked into what he watches and sometimes I don't. When I was in college, Cowboy Bebop was huge. It's not my favorite, but I watched it, along with everyone else. The anime that I really liked was Great Teacher Onizuka. It's also one of the first titles that got me into reading manga. A couple years after that, I met my husband, and he introduced me to Naruto. We watched the first movie together (Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow - Narutopedia, the Naruto Encyclopedia Wiki). I've been following Naruto every since--I started off watching the anime, then when I was all caught up through Shippuden, I started reading the manga, too (sob).

Out of the big shounen, I've watched a lot of Bleach but lost interest in it; we tried watching One Piece, but it's just not for me. Attack on Titan is very popular, but I didn't really get into it.

Titles I've watched and really enjoyed: Noragami (go watch it on Netflix like yesterday, for reals), Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Darker Than Black, Sword Art Online, and Black Butler (holy hell, Sebastian is one of the hottest cartoons I've ever laid eyes on).

I prefer to watch subtitled shows over dubbed shows. I hate the voice acting in dubbed anime for the most part.

That was something else I was going to ask, subtitled vs. dubbed.
I don't know much Japanese but I have noticed the dubs sometimes take liberties but I do prefer them most of the time.

I liked Black Butler as well though more for the rather twisted themes than the sexual energy of Sebastian.

If you watch subbed anime, here's an article on linguistic intricacies that you have to read: The many ways to say "I" in Japanese | nihonshock

I've always believed I'd be really into anime, but I've only seen a few things.

I've enjoyed the stuff that's come out of Studio Ghibli, including: Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and Spirited Away. A number of others have piqued my interest, but I haven't seen them yet.

I've seen a few of the classics, including Akira, Vampire Hunter D, and Fist of the North Star.

I watched Cowboy Bebop: The Movie but not the series.

I've seen Ghost in the Shell.

I've sampled Fullmetal Alchemist, but I didn't continue with it for one reason or another. (Probably availability.)

And fuck it if FLCL didn't leave a lasting impression on me.

I also highly enjoyed The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1986 TV series), probably not long after it first aired. I'm not sure if I've seen it all though. I'd probably watch it again if it has aged well or wasn't good only because I was a kid.

I've probably seen a few other things, but I can't remember. I've sampled a few things here and there, I'm sure.

I really should look around some more. I like the style of a lot of the movies, but there is also something about the tone some of them take. I like the ones that have a kind of fantastical nostalgia to them. I'm not sure how to describe it at the moment, but if you prod me, I might follow up.

Oh, yeah, we watched Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and I really liked that one. Very slick.

The film or the series? I remember seeing something newer, the film I think. I was thinking about checking it out. Maybe it was the series. I don't know.

    Wait—

    *checks Internet*

Okay, I'm probably thinking of Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence.

All I know is that the '95 film was pretty awesome.

Damn it. There is so much out there.

Just finished the first season of High School of the Dead and start Kill la Kill.

High School of the Dead follows a group of students and the school nurse after the zombie apocalypse.
While there is the usual gratuitous boob grabs and panty shots the series really goes for a horror theme.
The also handle the Walking Dead's question of what happens to people when the rules are tossed out the window.

Kill la Kill is kind of hard to describe except to say; living cloth that turns into battle armor - some of it, both male and female, that totally defies gravity - , high school clubs that are lead fight with weapons based on them (the poetry club writes and throws their poetry), a high school that seems to be run by the class president (which seems to a theme in a lot of anime), a secret society of nudists and the main character who fights with half a pair of scissors (scis?).

My students love Kill la Kill, and I've promised them I'll check it out at some point.

This is a reminder for @Martian to make sure he suggests this one to @Magpie. Crunchyroll - Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi - World's Greatest First Love Full episodes streaming online for free , which is the anime of the manga I discussed here: What books are you reading right now? | Page 79 | The TFP

Yaoi obviously isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the story is good for a romance, and it's very funny. Sadly, it is much more G-rated than the manga. What disturbs me, though, is the seiyuu for Onodera is the same dude who voices Suigetsu in Naruto, so there's a bit of cognitive dissonance.

The film was definitely a gift for the fans. The title alone was a nod to the not very ambiguous ending in episode 6, and a nice glimpse of events near the end.

The term you're looking for is fanservice: Fan service - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The entire end of Naruto was fanservice. I'm not really complaining, since it more or less ended the way I wanted it to.

I meant episode 26 now that I think of it. I was thinking of the 6 DVD set for the lot of them.

    Watching Blood+.
Amnesiac sixteen year old girl who is the only one (except her faithful man servant) who can kill monstrous vampires.
There are also competing groups, the US military/corporates who have weaponized the vampires and the Red Shield (religious?) who just want to kill them.
Nice touches with her adopted father and brothers.
Haji her man servant is pretty badass as well.

He has to be the only guy I've ever seen who can make carrying a cello case look badass.

    Talking about themes in anime.
Granted this is called Blood+ so it's to be expected but anybody else notice how often blood is used or is a component of weapons in anime?

Right now, I´m only watching One Piece and Fairy Tail.
Going to start watching, when I have more time, Soul Eater, Baccano, Attack on Titan and Hunter x Hunter.

Speaking of themes in anime, there seems to be a pretty consistent one where when exposed to beautiful naked women the men develop nose bleeds sometimes at waterfall levels.
    Am I missing something?
