I decided to create a thread for this one...because the story is so unique.
And he's chosen a great topic to protest...money in politics. Specifically, campaign reform.

A man actually flew a toy helicopter onto the front lawn of the Capitol Building.
And it shut down the Capital area for a while (about 2-3 hours...I saw the notices coming through on it, for the govt. job I'm working.)

I hope he gets attention and his point across...they need to act on this.

**BTW...go to the link, they've got great video of the landing.

Another point...he was able to do with one, what I predicted they could potentially do with many.
They've had another "non-harmful" warning in DC. (they've been lucky with these surprises...)
The authorities have to figure out how to block flights/signals of these miniature vehicles.
Cause all you need is many pre-programmed flying drones...all with HARMFUL intent...going in at once.

So this guy's done a service for the nation...shown their vulnerability.
They need to fill in that gap quick. Technology is getting ahead of security forces.

And again, I hope his point gets across...if so, he'll have done a service to the citizenry.
Let's hope the media takes the new "play-toy" and harps on it...and allows him to get the point across.

    I agree...corporations are NOT people.

I hope Congress pays attention and acts.

Doubt it...but the topic needs attention.

    ....

BTW...If they're going to go for an Amendment...they should do voting rights one too...get rid of gerrymandering.
This is a slightly different topic...but if you're on a roll, kill two birds with one stone.

I suspect his message is going to be lost in the general freak out about security which is sad.

In most of the articles I've read they have two or three lines about why he did it and that's it.
The rest is quotes about how shocking that it happened.

It depends on how fast the media is distracted on other things.
Sometimes they take the ball and run with it...and it becomes a zeitgeist (ex: Joe The Plumber)

Let's hope they bite at this worm. The fish needs to be cooked and eaten.

I agree. It is an example of the wrong way to send a political message.

I still have no clue who this Joe The Plumber person is. Never read any of the stories discussing the subject.

It made the national news though and didn't hurt anyone (except for a few people who might lose their job), so it wasn't totally wrong. And it did get people in the government talking about it.

Is it going to change anything though, not really except for some new security protocols. Although I'm not sure what they should be. And I think the secret service, homeland security, FBI, and FAA should be thanking him for non-violently exposing a weakness in the air security.

Maybe while he is in jail he can write a documentary script on the corruption of money in politics and elections. But the question is how do you convince people to vote for a candidate that doesn't have the money and connections?

So far, the media only seems to be focused on the security breach and that he wasn't harmful.

They haven't focused on what he was protesting yet.
However, you've got to admire his gumption wearing his postal suit at court.
He certainly isn't shy about getting attention.
But if you're going to do it...do it safe and do it to tweak the noses of the establishment. (likely doesn't care about his job at the USPS anymore...)

I don't know, I think it was some publicity for the USPS as well. And any publicity is good publicity.

They didn't cover the 535 letters complaining about campaign finance and money in politics that much, but they did talk about it being the reason he did this.

I know it's not technically an accurate description but it's hilarious to call this the federal government arresting a federal employee delivering mail from taxpayers.

I bet he would have been able to get a lot closer if he was driving a postal truck... Although I'm still not sure how security could tell the difference between a non-violent protestor and a kamikaze terrorist.

It looks like the secret service didn't want to get in trouble again, so they threw everything they had at stopping some guy trying to fly a little quadcopter near the White House today. CNN thought it must have been one of the most important stories of the day with how much time they spent talking about it. The coup in Burundi, who cares. Middle East exports of oil and trends at the Camp David meeting, doesn't matter. California's water problems and analysis on possible solutions, nope. Job market trends and what areas are doing well, why deal with boring stuff like that when there was a train crash?!!!

Wouldn't have been as spectacular, effective or pointed.
He would have gotten arrested thrown in jail and forgotten about.
It was the perfect way to get attention. (except for the risk of getting shot down...)

The guy just denied a plea deal that would have give him years of jail...he'd rather it go to court.
He balls on this man.

He can peacefully protest the government, and maybe this would fall under that... Probably violated some FAA air space regs though.
