The Weirdest Movies You've Ever Seen

I was definitely going to say Blue velvet, but I will also say Dogville.

 

I found Salo O Le Centoventi Giornate Di Sodoma on Vimeo. Definitely disgusting and disturbing. Being able to speak Italian would've helped.

Blue Velvet is one of Lynch's more normal movies.

 

sling blade. its been years since i watchted it and all i can remember is "mustard"

The Bed Sitting Room, 1969. The cast is a Who's Who of British comedy (the credits also read "introducing Marty Feldman....". I still don't know if this is a good movie, or just totally bizarre.

The Loved Ones. I thought I had to be on drugs during this movie.

 

Dwight Yoakam played the asshole boyfriend, Doyle Hargraves, in Sling Blade. That made the music jam scene, a bunch of drunk guys who could sort of play*, kind of humorous....if one recognized Yoakam.

*It's interesting because they play badly precisely well enough to give away what they're doing.

 

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005). The main star is Tommie Lee Jones. This isn't really a weird movie, it's more of an unusal 'small' movie with an important message. Teaser--Broken noses play an interesting part.

 

Being John Malkovich. Directed by Spike Jonze, written by Charlie Kaufman.

 

Somewhere in Time (1980) is a little weird but mostly a very good movie.

 

...yeah. That movie. I watched a thing on the director who said he was trying to make a movie with no plot that was focused purely on sensation. He wanted a very sensual film.

I will admit to having that as my pick for a bad movie night with some friends where I forced all of them to drink milk at the end.

And I've never seen Salo, never intend to see it and The Tin Drum should never be lumped together with it in any barf post.

 

In terms of weird, I don't count movies that are just shocking or disturbing or merely farcical or simply bad. I also disqualify Japanese movies out of hand, because there's just way, way too much utterly inexplicable weird shit in Japanese media.

Weird bad movies are just too numerous to mention. Weird good movies includes a lot (but not all) of David Lynch's ouevre, and a lot (but not all) of Terry Gilliam's as well. I must be one of the few nominal Lynch fans that didn't like Eraserhead or love Mulholland Drive, one of the few nominal Gilliam fans that didn't love Brazil.

Since it has been mentioned a couple of times, I confess to loving Sling Blade, though I would not qualify it as a "weird movie." Despite the fact that after I saw it, I couldn't stop telling people "Ah like them french fried pertaters. Mmmhmm. Like 'em with mustard."

I thought 2001: A Space Odyssey was pretty good but really weird the first time I saw it, in high school. When I next saw it, in college, I was stoned as fuck, and just thought it was flat-out awesome.

Pink Floyd's The Wall is both excellent and weird, and also depressing as all hell. One of the few weird movies I've seen where watching it while high did not help, just made it more intensely depressing.

Fantastic Planet. That was weird. And it did help watching it while high. Dr. Strangelove: Or, How I Stopped Worrying and Love the Bomb is both weird and an amazing classic. Altered States. Also weird, and decent but not great. Inception was weird and brilliant. Labyrinth is weird, and not too bad, though when it came out and I saw it (I was 14), I was way too distracted by the teenage hotness of Jennifer Connelly to really take in how weird it was.

A Clockwork Orange was weird and good (though the book was both weirder and better). Barbarella, Queen of the Galaxy: weird to the weirdic, laughably badly written and acted, but worth it for young, super-hot Jane Fonda. Also much better if watched stoned. The Fifth Element: royally weird, but beautiful and awesome. Jacob's Ladder is disturbing, but it is also legitimately weird, and good. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is so beloved and funny that it's easy to forget that it's really weird (though not even close to as weird as the book it's based on, Who Censored Roger Rabbit?).

Apocalypse Now. That is ungodly brilliant, and weird as shit.

When I was in high school, the revival theater near me used to have something of a sense of humor about their programming: for like two weeks they showed a double bill of Head and Shaft.

 

A bump in case anybody has any movies to add.

I should save or print this as a Watch When In The Right, Or Wrong, Mood list.
