I just finished Psycho Pass on Netflix.

Pretty good future cop noir mini-series.

    ...

Edit: Flashback to drunk me last year...

I also finished Rin / Daughter(s) of Mnemosyne.

Creepy story. The whole immortality thing was a twist.

    You are a weeb.

Psycho-Pass is on my list of things to watch but I haven't gotten around to it yet. It's actually written by the same guy who did Madoka Magica, Gen Urobuchi. His fans have nicknamed him Urobutcher due to the bleak nature of the shows he produces.

They've just announced a second season of Sound! Euphonium. Because for some of us watching anime isn't nerdy enough. We have to watch anime about high school bands.

I mean, that and copious yuri baiting.

I'm only slightly ashamed of how excited I am.

Rewatched the first episode of Blood+, in which Haji hardly speaks, but damn... Katsuyuki Konishi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia has a sexy voice (alas, not sexy himself).

What is this? If I understand correctly it's Japanese cartoons of adult drama with big eyes. What is Anime to you I mean? This is one of those things that I probably just won't understand.

If you read through the thread, we define anime and its types and tropes pretty clearly through the posts. Yes, anime, as most Americans understand it, is animation from Japan. For real fans, though, it is so much more than that.

Ok thank you. I'll go back and read through but I hope I don't get into this as it's weird.

I'll have to check that out. I was a band geek in high school and college. I'm unabashed, unapologetic, and unashamed.

As someone who is most certainly weird, anime works very well for me.

Ok I kinda get it now. You consider yourself to be different and this is an outlet for whom you perceive people are like you? Americans who like Japanese cartoons of American daytime dramas like Days of Our Lives, but in cartoon form? Help me out here. Is there a Victor Kiriakis character? If so I could get into this. Always wanted to be Victor Kiriakis. This man controls interests in industry and hence the ladies. Has jets and whatnot.

Do I have a good handle on this? Need to read more?

    I'd say a lot more.
I borrowed this from a previous page.
It's a map of all the different kinds of anime you can watch depending on you interests, moods and style.
This should give you some idea of how broad a range anime covers.

Dang! As of this moment I'm sitting firmly in Cowboy Bebop just cause it sounds familiar. Any recommendations. No shit, I will give this a try. Not promising anything though as I'm a big fan of Larry McMurtry's stuff - not sure what the Japanese equivalent might be and I'm kinda scared to learn but ok.

    Not a bad choice.
Best opening credit song ever, anime or regular show.

For my anime friend here is a pretty good list of the best opening anime music, even if they do wrongly put Tank second .

Ok I'll keep trying. One thing caught my eye: @:30 that's a Canick Shark C decocker model. A very close copy of my CZ P-01 compact without the useless rail.

Season 1 is available for free on crunchyroll in glorious 480p. You gotta shell out if you want the high def version but it probably isn't worth it if you're only interested in one series.

On the subject of big eyes, I was discussing with Magpie the so-called "KyoAni eyes" (named after Kyoto Animation, who popularized the drawing style in modern anime) and stumbled across an article on just that:

A Serious Look at Big Anime Eyes

The big eyes aren't really the point, nor is it really about fitting in, at least for me. Lots of different people watch anime for lots of different reasons. I like it because it's interesting to me. It's entertainment.

I also enjoy western animation, so I guess it's just animation in general seems to have captured my interest in some way.

The really neat thing about anime though is that it's produced by a completely different culture with different values and tropes and ideas about humour and drama and all that stuff. So you get stories that aren't really the sorts of stories that you'd get from more familiar entertainment and it sometimes forces you outside of your comfort zone a bit. I think it's interesting to get insight into how other people live, even if that insight is through a pop culture lens.

And then you start to get stuff like Avatar: The Last Airbender and RWBY where you have westerners producing animation that is inspired by and draws heavily on anime influences, creating this sort of fusion style, which is in itself mimicking some of the classic anime like Cowboy Bebop, much of which draws influence from American media. So it kind of ends up feeding on itself.

I could probably write a lot more about this but I'd have to stop and think about it, which I'm not equipped to do from where I am now.

Now that my lunch is finished and my tea is cooled, I am considering whether or not to hole up in bed for the rest of the day while I fight this cold and engage in some rewatching of the usual suspects. I need to overdose on cute romance.

The second season of Noragami, Noragami Aragoto, is also on my watch list, but I have to watch that with my husband, or else I'll feel terribly guilty. He doesn't care about boys' love, so I'm in the clear if I rewatch Junjou Romantica (which has new episodes I need to catch up on), Sekaiichi Hatsukoi, or Love Stage!
