I bought that one during one of the big sales. It's so pretty, but I couldn't get the hang of controlling two people. I've heard it's better with a controller (as opposed to keyboard + mouse), but I haven't gotten one yet (though I think Eden might have one...hmmm. I'll have to steal it.)

I'd gone a few of decades with no food issues (or any issues, really), so I was feeling pretty confident. Then suddenly, someone was starving. Then three people. And then the notifications for death were constant and never-ending, and I went from 50+ laborers (with all the other jobs filled), to ZERO. I could only watch in horror and dismay.

Speaking of Banished, I was playing it last night (didn't get around to Blackwell.) I built a few buildings, made sure I had tools, food, & firewood coming in, and then I went to do...something. I don't remember what. Smoke, maybe. Anyway, Eden came home, I got distracted, put some new curtains up...basically left the game running for a good 45 to 60 minutes at top speed.

I came back expecting everything to be chaos and doom and such....nope. Everyone was working, I had STACKS of tools & firewood, and things were running even more smoothly than if I'd been actively playing. Sadly, I hadn't gotten to the point of building any extra houses, so everyone eventually just died of old age. I found myself kind of writing a story in my head about what that would be like...you move to this new community, everyone pulls together to make sure the village is running smoothly, but no one breeds. And then eventually, you're the only one left. Walking through the empty market stalls. Collecting wood and stone that no one will ever use, merely to keep yourself occupied. Waiting for a traveling merchant that never comes. Feeding the cows that have become your only companions. The deserted streets. The utter sound of silence.

...aaand that's how I went all existential and meta on a fun little game.

Lately I've been playing Valkyria Chronicles. It's a sort of WWII-esque alternate history tactical turn-based strategy thing. It takes place in a sort of fantasy Europe stand-in during a war between the Imperial army to the east and the Federation army to the west. You play as a conscripted lieutenant fighting for Gallia, which was a neutral third party right up until the Imperial army invaded. So you take your tanks and M1s generic rifles and anti-tank lances and are tasked with beating back the Imperial invaders. The setting is different enough to be interesting, the gameplay is fairly standard TBS but solid enough, if a bit easy for a fellow who cut his teeth on X-COM madness. I'm enjoying it so far.

My only complaint is that it's a bit of a tease; the game is part of a trilogy, but the second one was only released for PSP, and the third was only released in Japan (also for PSP). So unless I buy a PSP and learn Japanese I'm not going to be able to finish the story any time soon. Oh well, can't be helped.

I've been playing Warcraft III lately, mostly custom battles. Also having fun with the new Don't Starve expansion, Shipwrecked.

Finally getting to that point where I don't get playable framerates in most games. Time to start reading up on the current state of hardware. Probably going to be an i5, couple gigs of ram, mid level asus mobo, and whatever's the bang for buck midpoint on a graphics card. Bright side is I've already got a case and heatsink, and the power supply should still be sufficient.

As for games... I'm still playing mostly warframe.

Welp, just gonna have to learn Japanese.

I'm finally playing actual video games again, after years of my laptop slowly dying and becoming more obsolete. I bit the bullet and built myself a kickass behemoth gaming rig. The main system drive is an M.2, with a dedicated SSD for Steam. 2 TB of regular HD back that up. 32 GB of RAM, and a 4GB video card. The mobo will support 3 way SLI, so I'm not worried about upgradability. So I'm playing a bunch of different things I've had my eye on for years:

    1. Assasin's Creed III and IV
    2. Homeworld 2
    3. Bioshock Infinite
    4. CoD2:MW
    5. Metro 2033
    6. Medieval II: TW with the Third Age patch
    7. LOTRO again starting from scratch so that Seamaiden can join me
    8. Portal 2 (waiting for Seamaiden to play through Portal and Portal 2) so I can finally play the co-op mode.
    9. Gone Home
    10. Dishonoured (first thing I played to refresh my memories for Dishonoured 2 next spring)
    11. MechWarrior Online
I'm doing my best to avoid Skyrim. I just installed the Mechwarrior Online on the weekend.

I bought Stronghold 2 during the Winter Steam Sale (I owned it before, but can't seem to find the disk.) I've been doing the "Path to Peace" campaign, and I got stuck on this one particular mission, and I could not figure out why. The objective was to keep your neighboring estate's granary stocked until the lord got back from fighting. I kept shipping apples, 50 at a time, 4 different carters, and I still kept failing. What the hell?

After something like eight attempts, I realized I was sending apples to the wrong estate. *facepalm*

Doom and Doom 2 using the Herc_Up.WAD.

Dozens of new bad guys and dozens of new weapons and power-ups.

Probably the most fun I've had with the game since it first scared the crap outta me back in '94.

Taking a break from CoD to play Homeworld 2 while I wait for Sands of Kharak to drop in price. I'm finding the Homeworld 2 interface actually worse than Homeworld.

  17. Playing Sims 3 for the first time. Last sims I played was part 2. After seeing how bad part 4 was received , decided on part 3........so far it's totally worth the 30 bucks from Steam.

I played a few "escape the room/building" games recently. The old insane asylum escape was pretty good.

Sims 3 is an old favorite for me. Last time I played it, I made my character bang every woman in sight. He ended up with 20 kids.

i been jumping into the f2p Wildstar for a MMO fix; it's got saturday morning cartoon graphics, good questing/loot/dungeons, a non-existant pay wall that i've noticed so far, a nice scifi theme and a fun 'path' mechanic beyond the usual classes
