Well, Free is pretty homoerotic. You can choose to roll with it but you can't really fight it.

I've been watching Yuki Yuna Is A Hero this past week. It's pretty good, but strongly reminiscent of Madoka Magica. I find myself wondering how many times we're going to deconstruct the magical girl genre.

Magpie didn't like it but she can be fickle.

Yuki Yuna went by quickly. It's only twelve episodes so I don't feel bad about it. I give it a B+. Good effort, but a little derivative.

Today I watched the first couple episodes of One Punch Man. It's the story of a man who took up being a hero as a hobby, but he trained too hard and has become too strong. He defeats any enemy in a single punch (hence the name) and he's too tough for anyone to hurt him. Consequently he's become bored and is questioning his motives and effectiveness as a hero. In between existential crises he kills monsters with a single punch. It's kind of his thing.

It's too early for a solid recommendation yet but I'm liking what I've seen so far.

    It's thoroughly entertaining.

I mentioned Kyoto Animation (KyoAni) before and a bit about their distinctive style. Today I found an article that covers the subject in exhausting detail:

What Makes Kyoto Animation So Special? - Anime News Network

Really goes to show what makes them different and why they seem to stand out so much compared to other studios.

I'm attempting to watch today's episode of One Punch Man but daisuki.net keeps throwing 502 bad gateway errors at me. I don't think they expected it to be as big of a hit as it is.

I could watch it illegally but I have a strong preference for official channels. Call me old fashioned.

I just got into One Punch Man after an extended break from anime. I watch it on Hulu. Being a DBZ fan, I loved it.

I started watching Kill la Kill recently and like the campiness of it. I almost didn't watch it because of the outfits. I'm not a huge Fan Service person when it comes to anime.

The easy way to say it is a style of Japanese film and television animation, typically made for adults but with ones made for children as well.
However that would really be simplifying things down to the bare bones.
There are now American animation studios doing anime style movies and television so the idea that it being limited to Japan is wrong.
The fact that many of the anime are based on manga (the largely adult comic series from Japan) is another part of the puzzle as well.

I'm sure there is much more that Martian and Snowy can add to this to clarify further since all I've done is make it muddled.

Since I only "sort of" know what anime is, I searched anime for dummies.

I'm not really a hardcore anime expert, though I've enjoyed my fair share. The short and simple (almost to the point of being glib) answer is that anime is animation from Japan. In Japan, the term anime refers to all animation, regardless of target audience and country of origin. Here in the western world we tend to be more particular in that we're generally referring to the stuff that comes out of Japan, and is intended for mature audiences. Western shows can have anime influences but they're not generally classified as anime themselves (animesque, sometimes).

If you're looking to try it, there are a bunch of good shows on Netflix. The article Chris Noyb linked does a better job summarizing them then I could.

For Christmas I bought Magpie Sailor Moon R volume 1 on Blu Ray, and she bought me the Cowboy Bebop movie on blu ray. Because we are nerds.

One Punch Man is over, but they're making a bunch of OVAs. The OVAs are not on Daisuki. This vexes me.

It's practically guaranteed a second season though so that's cool.

Also, that fight sequence in the OPM finale... that was something else.

I mean, I'm not really so into fanservice myself. Some people like the animated titties and I won't begrudge those people their rather mild kink. Doesn't do anything for me.

It's exceedingly rare to find a show that doesn't include some amount of fanservice. Sometimes it's mild enough that you can basically ignore it. Sometimes it isn't but the show is so good that you just overlook it anyway. And sometimes, on very rare occasions, an anime is so over-the-top bonkers and does it well enough that you can't even imagine it working any other way.

There are really only three shows off the top of my head that I can think of for the third category. Kill La Kill is one of them. The other two are Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and FLCL. I recommend both.

Winter season is properly underway now, with a bunch of new shows getting a lot of attention online.

I want to like Myriad Colors Phantom World. The premise is neat, but the first episode spent far too much time telling us that the female lead has giant breasts. Thanks, guys, I can see that, can we get back to the ghostbusting?

Erased is a cool premise but I don't really understand what's going on. Sort of like a Butterfly Effect thing? Further episodes will hopefully clarify.

The first episode of Dimension W was pretty good. Sci fi noir stuff, I can dig it.

Also noteworthy: Crunchyroll added Ghost Stories. If you're unfamiliar with the concept of a "gag dub" this is a great way to get acquainted with it. Here's a taste:

I haven't decided whether Erased or Dimension W is my favourite of this season. I'm enjoying both quite a lot.

Myriad Colors Phantom World, on the other hand. Ugh. I want to like it. The art is nice.

It looks like the one to watch in spring 2016 is going to be My Hero Academia:

Sort of anti-OPM. I quite enjoyed the first episode.

I'm also watching Ace Attorney, and plan to watch Joker Game. I've added Bakuon to my list because motorcycle racing, but it looks like moe crap so I may not stick with it. Depends on how fresh it ends up being I guess.

Dimension W is pretty good. The visuals are nice. It does get a bit incoherent at times; dimension w seems to be code for whatever weirdness the plot currently requires.

Erased was definitely the better of the two in hindsight.

Bakuon is confirmed moe crap. But I'm going to stick out another episode or two before I ditch it.

One girl seemingly never takes off her helmet. I don't recall her name, but in my head she is Stig's kawaii cousin.

It's cute and entertaining. Worth a watch if that's your thing.

you are way out of my league....but I and my daughters watched "Star Blazers" every morning as I fixed waffles and got them ready for school (late 80's early 90's?)
I am just finishing.."Rosario+Vampire"....and I loved "Freezing"...the first 2 years.....any suggestion down at my level? (We have watched almost all the "Ghilbi" movies)...and "Night Raid 1931"

bobby surprises nobody by going for the ecchi stuff. :p

In the vein of Star Blazers you might try Captain Harlock. It's older sci fi that I think has a similar "space opera" vibe. More recent but still not new, Cowboy Bebop is a must watch, though probably a bit violent to watch with the kids. If you want something fantasy, maybe Inuyasha or Slayers.

Ecchi, by the way, is a Japanese term that roughly equates to 'kind of pervy' so that's right up your alley. Some popular ecchi shows:

    Prison School
    Is This A Zombie?
    High School DxD
    High School of the Dead

Note that despite the similar titles the last two are not related. Ecchi isn't really my bag so I can't comment on these ones first hand but they come up a lot in anime forums where I lurk. There's also Monster Musume if you want to explore the weirder side of it.

Also, there's Space Dandy. It's a sci fi show about a guy who hangs out at a space Hooters. I have a feeling you'll like it. You can watch the other shows dubbed or subtitled, whatever works best for you, but make sure you watch this one dubbed. You'll get a lot more out of it that way.

If you liked Night Raid 1931 you should check out Joker Game. They're actually not as identical as they appear at first glance but if you like one you'll probably also like the other.

Ghibli has a vibe all of it's own but if you're looking for more family friendly shows you could watch with the (grand)kids, there's a ton of that out there too. This is already getting a bit longer than I intended so keeping it brief, you want to look for shows that are labelled shounen or shoujo, since those are targeted towards younger boys and girls, respectively. Shounen tends to be pretty straightforward good vs evil hero vs villain overcoming adversity type stuff with little to no fanservice. Shoujo can be similar but usually incorporates some kind of romantic subplot, or else ends up just being straight up romance. Sailor Moon would be a popular example of a shoujo series most people have heard of. Dragon Ball is shounen (and also terrible, so don't watch it). I'll see about putting lists together for those later but if you explore the catalogues on hulu, funimation and crunchyroll you should be able to get a feel for what's out there.

And of course if fun for the whole family is what you're after you can't go wrong with sports. Free! or Haikyu would be the most popular ones. @snowy likes to ogle the scantily clad boys in Free! but I promise there's a show about swimming in there too.
