SO and I really enjoyed One Punch Man. Only thing that took away from it was the annoying-spoiled-girl trope they were pushing for the loli fan service guys. Much like lordeden I'm not really into anime having the constant need for fan service. Or when female characters have retarded personalities to the point of extreme incompetence, ridiculously sexy outfits as "everyday" clothing, or always do the dumbest poses so that their ass is the majority of a frame/view. Sigh, my biggest complaint with the anime industry in a nutshell.

We also watched Dimension W recently. Enjoyed it quite a lot, but the second half seemed incredibly rushed. I think it was episode 7 where they covered so much background and a timeline of events that would have taken every other anime an entire half-season by itself. Enjoyable story and character development nonetheless.

EDIT: SO and I watched Space Dandy last year. Definitely highly recommended. The ecchi in it was enjoyable too when it came up. Really loved how the episodes were tied together at the end.

Tatsumaki (the "loli" character in OPM) is a bit polarizing, but she's meant to be obnoxious and unlikeable so that's mission accomplished as far as I'm concerned.

Dimension W definitely went off the rails a bit. I didn't end up enjoying it as much as the first few episodes led me to believe I would, but it wasn't terrible. It wasn't even so much that it was rushed as it just felt somewhat incoherent. Oh well.

Yeah, I really like the beginning of Dimension W way more than the end.
It would have been great as maybe three seasons with the same amount of story spread out.

Oh no, I get why she was put in there. I just hate the childlike-girl-in-suggestive-outfits-and-terrible-personality trope in general. The industry's use of borderline pedophilic designs of some anime characters, and explicitly pedophilic ones in hentai, just bothers me a lot on a personal level.

    Agreed with both.

They were creating a really nice background for the universe the anime was set in and should have spent a lot more time continuing to do so. Shame.

    What? It's about swimming?

Yeah and Haikyuu! is about volleyball, and Kuroko no Basuke is about basketball.

    I'm unconvinced.

Netflix will be streaming the upcoming Little Witch Academia series. This is very happy news.

If you haven't watched the two existing Little Witch Academia films you really should. They're fantastic. The first one is all of 26 minutes, and Enchanted Parade is a little under an hour.

There's not a lot in the new season that I'm excited for, but the first episode of Sweetness and Lightning was pretty cute.

    Hey look it's this thread.

Summer season is done. Sweetness and Lightning was 22 minutes of adorableness every week. If I can be somewhere even close to that good of a father to my daughter I'll consider myself a success.

But, uh, y'know, without the whole dead wife part.

We also watched New Game (or I guess NEW GAME!) together. It was alright. I was hoping for Shirobako but with video games. What I got was closer to K-On but with video games. There were also odd fanservice moments that didn't fit the tone of the show very well so that was distracting. Overall I give it a B+, with the biggest complaint being the concept of a video game developer staffed entirely by women is just pushing suspension of disbelief too far.

We caught up on Re: Zero after ignoring it through the spring just in time for it to end, so that was a thing. It was alright, not great. I think it started out with aspirations of deconstructing the oddly popular "otaku gets trapped in an alternate fantasy world where his overly specific knowledge of video game tropes and themes causes him to excel" genre, but it sort of forgot that's what it was doing halfway through and turned into the thing it was deconstructing. It still managed not to be terrible but it wasn't blowing my mind and didn't really live up to the level of hype surrounding it.

On my own I've been watching Haven't You Heard? I'm Sakamoto, which I actually prefer to think of by it's much more succinct Japanese title, Sakamoto Desu Ga. Magpie didn't like this one, said it was too weird for her. It certainly is that, something like Jo Jo's Bizarre High School Adventure. The premise is more or less that Sakamoto is a character who is always cool and stylish regardless of the circumstances, so the writers put him in increasingly bizarre situations and then have him get out of them in increasingly bizarre(ly stylish) ways. I find it entertaining but the style definitely isn't for everyone.

Last one I want to comment on right now is Mob Psycho 100. This is based on a web comic by the same artist who did One Punch Man, but where One Punch Man went from web comic -> manga -> anime and got the super smooth manga art style, this one skips the middle step. The animation is, uh, stylized. It's not fair to call it bad, because it isn't; it's actually quite well animated but it's well animated in a deliberately amateurish art style. Not for everyone, but if you can get past that it's highly entertaining. Premise is that Mob is a super powered psychic middle schooler who just wants to be left alone and live a normal middle school life. His talents go largely unrecognized except by his mentor/con man Reigen, who exploits Mob's abilities for profit. If you enjoyed OPM you will like this one too.

Also, check out that opening. Chunky overdriven hard rock guitars, catchy vocals, and all set to super slick animation and a countdown (er, up) that you can't help but get pumped for. Sure, it isn't JAM Project screaming ONE PUUUNCH but it's not that far off in my opini0n.

Looking ahead, there's not much in the fall season I'm excited about. New Sound Euphonium starts this month which I'm super pumped for because I am a nerd. New working might be good. Working was nice but felt like it dragged out a little too long and I don't know how much I care about the second coming yet. Apart from those two nothing really seems very interesting to me. I might try one or two just out of boredom but then again maybe not. My free time is limited and will only get more so in the coming months, and I have enough of a backlog to dig through that there's not a lot of point in sitting through sub-par shows.

Should talk about the Crunchyroll/Funimation thing but this post is long enough so we'll leave it off for now.

Not too long ago Magpie admitted to me that she'd never seen a Ghibli film. Tonight we watched My Neighbor Totoro. She liked it but thought Catbus was creepy. Which, in fairness, he kind of is.

I was thinking we'd do Kiki's Delivery Service next, but maybe we'll go with Spirited Away instead. It's kind of exciting for me that I get to explore these movies with someone who's never seen them before. Then we'll get to do the whole thing again with our daughter some day.

I'm annoyed with myself now because I totally sold this season short. To be fair, I don't think I was the only one.

Flip Flappers is excellent and kind of creepy. It strikes me as very much in the vein of Madoka/Yuki Yuna, with maybe some Evangelion vibe tossed in over top. The creepy subtext remains subtext so far; it's mostly just two girls having magic adventures right now. I'm expecting everything to go to shit basically at any moment now.

Yuri on Ice probably has @snowy drooling over all the naked cartoon men. It's actually a really well done sports anime though, so far. I never thought I'd get excited about figure skating but here we are.

I watched the first episode each of Poco's Udon World and March Comes In Like A Lion. I was expecting Poco's Udon World to be a rehash of Sweetness and Lightning but it doesn't seem to be going that way. I wasn't sure what to expect from March Comes In Like A Lion but I still managed not to get it. The art is really nice. I'm not sure how I feel about the rest of it yet.

I don't actually have time for all of these.

Going to see, Sword Art Online The Movie: -Ordinal Scale-, tonight. It's a Fathom Event Screening. I will post a review later tonight. I have a feeling it'll be another rehash, but I loves me some Asuna and Kirito. :)

    Spoiler Free Review:

    Prologue
In 2022, the world of virtual reality was upended by the arrival of a new invention from a genius programmer, Akihiko Kayaba. Called NerveGear, it was the first full-dive system and with it, came endless possibilities to VRMMORPGs.
In 2026, a new machine called the Augma is developed to compete against the NerveGear and its successor, the Amusphere. A next-gen wearable device, the Augma doesn't have a full-dive function like its predecessors. Instead, it uses Augmented Reality (AR) to get players into the game. It is safe, user-friendly and lets users play while they are conscious, making it an instant hit on the market. The most popular game on the system is “Ordinal Scale” (aka: OS), an ARMMORPG developed exclusively for the Augma.
Asuna and the gang have already been playing OS for a while, by the time Kirito decides to join them. They’re about to find out that Ordinal Scale isn’t all fun and games…

Before I go into the movie, I want to get in the experience at the theater. So I get to the movie about an hour early. There were a few people. I was able to get a good seat. I was initially disappointed seeing so few movie gooers. Thankfully there was a slow stream of people. I'd say the the showing got to about %75 capacity. I was perhaps the oldest person there. I think I was older than some of the parents bringing their kids. I luckily look younger that I actually am. It still fell a little weird. The audience was a little miffed that the movie didn't start at the advertised time. There was 30-40 minutes of filler they could have started earlier. We all had a big laugh at the voice actor for Kirito. He was WAY over the top in the personal interview before the move. He kept asking for the audience to cheer and thanking us for cheering. All we did was laugh, because no one was cheering. He did it like 3 times. We eventually started yelling for the film to start when he was fist pumping for a cheer. It was great. The movie finally started and we could get sown to enjoying the film.

So the main non-action arc is Love, relationships and promises. Kirito and Asuna's relation is progressed a little from when we left them in GGO AKA SAO2. There is a running gag about Kirito meeting Asuna's mother. You have to watch through the credits to get the payoff. That's all I'll share. We get a few early shots of Kirito trying to figure out what college he wants to go to. Asuna, and the other SAO crew are playing the new hotness, Ordinal Scale. An augmented reality MMORPG that covers the WHOLE city. There is one scene were the movie gets into AR surpassing VR in popularity. It has some funny moments in it, especially if you were an ALO fan. Kirito is reluctant to play Ordinal Scale. He kinda does so just to get the others to stop bugging him about it. He make reference several times to his body feeling heavy, another different between AR and VR is that you actually are your avatar and Kirito has been lax in his Kendo training again. ;-)

One of the main characters is an AR AI Idol called , Yuuna. She's almost pulled right out of something you'd see in a vocaliod. Petite, sivler-hair, and chatty with the players. During a special event battle, Yuuna makes an appearance and everyone loses their collective shit, since it's a rare for her to appear at a battlefield. We also see the ranked 2 player, Eiji. We find that Eiji and Luna have some kind of relationship outside of the game. Their connection is brought more into light as the movie progresses. We also, learn that the special event battles are actually using bosses from SAO, but only the former SAO players recognize them. Through the course of the movie we also find out that it's bad if an SAO player is beat by one of these bosses. This becomes the driving point for the action in the film. Why are SAO players being affected? How are SAO bosses getting into Ordinal Scale? Kirito has to step up as these questions become forefront. There are some good relationship scenes that I can't really discuss without giving the movie away. There are some feels and some scares. Most importantly, there are some epic fights in true SAO fashion. I give the movie a 9/10. The only reason I can't give it a 10 is because the same tropes we know are the staple of SAO are still there in Ordinal Scale. Granted said tropes are what I love about SAO, I would have liked for some of subplots to have been given more time. There were some filler scenes that could have been shortened or cut to achieve this. That said, I had a great time and highly recommend this film to anyone who likes SAO, even if you weren't very fond of Season 2. ;-)

The kindest thing I can say about Sword Art Online is that it had a fairly strong premise. The first story arc was alright. Season two was a mess.

I've heard the movie isn't terrible though.

In other news, One Punch Man is on Netflix.. There's very little excuse not to watch this one. If you're ethically opposed to graphic cartoon violence I guess, maybe.

    Not my thing, sorry.

We did see A Silent Voice when it came to the theatre. It was not hentai. It was very good. I recommend it.

Although we did enjoy it the girl behind us was pretty over-the-top. I don't think she actually stopped crying through the whole thing.

What Type of Hentai / Anime Do You Not Like And Why?

This popped into my head and I thought I'd ask the group. I'll start with Anime. I don't like Sports Anime. I guess it's hard for me to go all in when I'm fan of some sports. The sport tropes just turn me off. I'm kinda Meh on Historical. I love Japanese culture, but Historical Anime seem like a lesson to me and I'd rather it be more story. Those two are pretty much it. I'm mostly good with other anime genre. As for Hentai... There are so many genres in Hentai I'm gonna stick with the ones I dislike the most. Number is NTR or Netore. Basically Cuck Porn, Cheating Porn, etc. The scenes are usually messed up and I was cheated on, so noping right out of that one. Mindbreak. This one usually involves hypnosis, blackmail or psychological torment to break the protagonist's will and make them a willing sex partner. I just find the bulk of this genre creepy and cruel. Sex should be fun sexy and playful IMHO. Blackmail, prior reasons. lastly rape. This genre conflicts me because there is A LOT of grey. I mean that I've watched some where the female antagonist purposefully puts herself in a situation to be raped because she wants that sexual experience. A lot of these can fall into some dark shit and it just becomes more uncomfortable than sexy. Then there is the flat out Rape Hentai ( I Don't Count Tentacle or Demon ) (Don't Judge Me). Then there is flat out rape hentai and hentai that incorporates parts of the previous genres I don't like.
