Physics question: "So it's like some lightning-rod, or insulator-resonator thingajig?"

    This just happened to me about an hour ago,
    and it's a weird story, worthy for a good discussion.

    Just here in my ye ol' desert town, 12AM
    Getting gas at the local Conoco,

    and saw:

    A pickup truck
    with an upright pole [3' to 1m] about 1" thick, solid steel,
    capped with a cylinder of mystery (as if a coil would be in it) [near the top (5"x3")]

    With 1/4" gauge cord
    shaped into four Loops, at the base of the "antenna" -
    |||that's what tipped me off that it was for resonance with something.|||
    And the "antenna" itself,

    really looked kinda primitive.
    It was
    the same type of cord
    ,
    strung 6 feet forward and 8 inches down,
    and attached at the truck cab --



    ---I would guess that this was an
    Insulator-resonator Thinkamajigger.--

    That's the best I can describe with limited circuits vocab for me to use, and a lot of knowledge of energy patterning :-\

    Just got me curious, 'cause at this time of year
    it's probably someone who's in our County Fair,
    but hey, then again, maybe it's not,


    I'm fascinated, I think it could be something very grand, like a lightning rod or gamma radio antenna and down-cycler.

    I only mention it because it came in a pair of trucks that parked at that gas station at the same time, the other one being a pace car. Maybe some sort of -guessing here-

    My first hypothesis is to say that it's for the em-resonance of the car as a whole,
    to harmonize the crankshaft, alternator, with atmospheric magnetism. For what purpose I
    do not know.

    Anybody else wanna have a guess at it?

    Hard to say without seeing it, but "long pole mounted on a truck with wire coiled around the bottom" sounds like a CB antenna to me. Are you sure it wasn't that? Maybe a homemade job.

    At first blush it did look definitely like an antenna of some kind,
    but with the both ends actuallly attached to the car, 7 foot long from back corner of truck-bed to back corner of its cab.

    Was the truck old enough to have a metal body or frame?
    It is possible that they fashioned an antenna to get more range (without adding height, which could be a problem going under bridges) by incorporating the physical structure of the vehicle.

    Think of a cheap handheld radio, if you're not getting good reception, you can rest it against something metal to improve overall sound quality.

    Or could it just be bent over for storage while driving, with the intention of it being fully extended when parked?

    Yeah, I'd wager they just nailed it down so that it doesn't get damaged by low bridges or low flying seagulls or whatever.

    But again, kind of hard to say without seeing it. This thread demands photos. Pics or it didn't happen.

    That seemed likely, it kinda had some sort of holster now that I think of it, a bit of a welded, appropriately angled cylinder at the end nearest the cab.
