I have an active Facebook account.
I enjoy keeping track of births in the extended family. My cousin just introduced her first grandson.
I am part of a networking/support group of working mothers in academia that is based in facebook. It's an inspiring group to be a part of. The other ones that I found on various forums were dead, this facebook was my only viable option for this sort of outlet.

    ...Am I an idiot?

Please do elaborate more on why you hate it.
Is it the fact that your newsfeed is filled with things that you don't care about? There are ways to filter that.
Do you dislike the fact that people can see everything you post? We can work with you to improve your privacy settings.
Do you find that your family members and friends are presenting political opinions that differ from your own? It's fairly easy to "unfollow" specific offending friends and family.
    Or is it something else?

As someone who still refuses to get a Facebook account, I say you aren't.

There is definitely value in it, and for some people that value outweighs any negatives, or reasonable potential negatives. Even though I've decided (so far) not to partake, it doesn't mean I refuse to see why many/most do.

Count me among the anti F/Bookers.

I have a F/B account but have never and will never use it. My disdain for F/B was further enhanced after several meetings with the F/B government affairs staff several years ago. Now those folks are idiots.

My biggest issue with F/B is invasion of privacy which is a fact of life with all social media.

F/B is the absolute worst. While the claim that F/B owns all content is a myth, they do retain the rights to use your content.

You own all of the content and information you post on Facebook, and you can control how it is shared through your privacy and application settings. In addition:
    1. For content that is covered by intellectual property rights, like photos and videos (IP content), you specifically give us the following permission, subject to your privacyand application settings: you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook (IP License). This IP License ends when you delete your IP content or your account unless your content has been shared with others, and they have not deleted it.
    2. When you delete IP content, it is deleted in a manner similar to emptying the recycle bin on a computer. However, you understand that removed content may persist in backup copies for a reasonable period of time (but will not be available to others).
    3. When you use an application, the application may ask for your permission to access your content and information as well as content and information that others have shared with you. We require applications to respect your privacy, and your agreement with that application will control how the application can use, store, and transfer that content and information. (To learn more about Platform, including how you can control what information other people may share with applications, read our Data Policy and Platform Page.)
    4. When you publish content or information using the Public setting, it means that you are allowing everyone, including people off of Facebook, to access and use that information, and to associate it with you (i.e., your name and profile picture).
    5. We always appreciate your feedback or other suggestions about Facebook, but you understand that we may use your feedback or suggestions without any obligation to compensate you for them (just as you have no obligation to offer them).

    No F/B for me!

No, "you" are probably not, but you, evidently are not one of "those people" who find it necessary to post each time you take a d**p
I am tired of having to delete every F'ing time someone posts some crap I couldn't give a damn about..
Sorry, not all IDIOTS, just many....

Sounds like facebook isn't your problem, it's who you friends with on facebook. I don't post a lot on facebook but I use it as a way to be anti-social while maintaining my social responsibilities with acquaintances. I don't need to catch up with them if I read the stuff going on in their lives.

    "Did you hear about so-and-so?"

"Yeah, she is pregnant. Congrats for her."

Boom, done. Social responsibilities slain and I never had to talk to her. I don't really like her and I doubt she knows who the father is.

If I friend someone that posts a shit ton of stuff, I remove them from my list. If they post things I don't like, I give them three strikes before I remove them from my feed. There are a few people that post SJW stuff all over their pages and I let it slide because I truly like those people. I'll hide posts that raise my blood pressure. I've built up quite a good echo chamber and I like it. I just recently took two heavy pro-gun people off my list because I started wanting to reply to their misguided BS they post. When that happens, WOOSH, they are gone.

I also have only 3 family members on my feed with 7 that can not see my feed, posts, likes or anything else. They also don't show up on my feed at all because I hate everything they post.

I use the messenger side of facebook WAY more than I do facebook. I'm in a ton of active messenger groups that I hand picked to stay in. Most of them involve geeky bodybuilders that we talk about inane shit or talk about lifting.

Facebook is what you make it. It's just a social media tool, just like a hammer is a tool. You can use it to build a house or you can keep slamming it into your thumb and cursing everyone around you.

It's the fucking internet. Social media is not going anywhere and will only get bigger and more ingraned into our digital lives.

Frankly (IMO), people who bitch about facebook are as bad as those that constantly post on it. If you don't want to see it, don't use it. Simple. Boom. Done.

I never thought I would be doing a post in defense of Facebook but here goes.
I keep my friends list short, basically only people I would want to talk to in everyday life.
If somebody posts too much shit that I can't handle, sexism and racism are a major cut off, then I just unfriend them.
It is a perfect way to keep up with my friends in the lower 48 now that I live in AK and my kiddos are media savvy as hell so it's easy to see what's going on with them.
As mentioned by others Messanger is useful especially for group projects.

Facebook is a tool, like all social media, like an ax, a phone, or a car.
They can suck or be valuable , just depends on how you use them.

That's where I'm at, tried it and didn't like it.
The moving target of privacy and security doesn't work for me. The crap to worthwhile content ratio just isn't there for me to go through the effort of tweaking things.

Do what the hell you want, I do. Just don't give me crap about Facebook, you're not likely to change my mind.
