I ran across this interview Stephen King had with Lee Child about Child's character, Jack Reacher, on YouTube.
In case you're interested, it's a pretty long video at almost 46 minutes.

It was fun to watch King fan-boy at Child about Reacher.

Also, even though I enjoyed the first movie and the new Reacher trailers look great, I still think Cruise is wrong for the part.

Thanks, I'll try to check this out. Big Child fan, and also hate TC as Reacher.

I am totally loading this as soon as I get to work. Tom Cruise is so wrong as Reacher. Even with lifts in his shoes.

If you watch only a few minutes of it, fast forward to 23:15 and watch for 30 seconds.....

And 29:05 for several minutes. Especially at 30:15. :p

Pretty clear what Child thinks of Tom Cruise as Reacher.

For me, Gerard Butler is the best choice to play Reacher. I'm going to check this out. Have read the entire oeuvre twice.

Has Butler ever successfully suppressed his accent in a movie before?
Besides that, he's no 6'5" hulking guy that would intimidate most guys.

I don't know. Lots of actors can modify their accents. You got me on old Gerry there. But I do know that he has the face, hair, body type and 6'2" is a heck of a lot closer to Reacher's size than TC's 5'7"...

By the way the new Jack Reacher movie: Never Go Back, is due to be released on Oct 21, 2016. It also stars Cobie Smulders.

I gave up on Cruise as an actor decades ago. When a short male actor does pretty much only action roles, and in interviews seems to take those roles way too seriously, a red flag goes up.

In retrospect, the role that made me think Cruise had some serious acting chops might've been very close to his real life personality: Charlie Babbitt in Rain Man.

There are many actors who get roles because of their box office appeal rather than their suitability for the role. Cruise is no where close to the Reacher character in the novels, but folks are used to seeing him as the 'action guy.' Money talks.

A while ago, when the first Reacher movie was in production, I read an interview with Lee Child (Jim Grant) that he was good with the choice of Cruise as Reacher because he felt that Cruise had the passion for the role and could act it.

    here I found it:

There’s been a little bit of griping that Tom Cruise isn’t exactly the right actor to play Jack Reacher, partly because of height. Jack Reacher is 6’5’’ and Tom Cruise is not known for being tall.

Cruise is a character actor. He really gets into a role. He can understand the role. He can project the vibe. But the only real answer is go see the movie. I guarantee you will come out of it and you will think, “What was I worried about?”

When I saw the first Reacher movie, as a huge Reacher fan, I found it incredibly distracting and disappointing. Cruise's acting was fine. While he appears to be nutty in real life, I have enjoyed most of his movies that I've seen. But you can't "act" a slim 5'7" guy into a burly 6'5" physically intimidating powerhouse.

TC was on one of the talk shows promoting Rock of Ages, and said that he never had any musical training until the film, and they discovered that he had a four octave vocal range. My wife the music major/teacher/musician, who was engrossed in a game on her Ipad, immediately said, "Bullshit."

Even if true, that didn't make him a good singer. I also remember some discussion of TC starting to have his speaking voice electronically processed at some point in his career. His critics said he needed help to sound more manly for his manly man roles, he defended it as a "voice stabilizer." Why didn't he work with a voice coach to drop his voice naturally? Hell, I can drop my voice and keep it there without much effort.

just finished the latest Reacher novel 'Night School'. Not a bad read. It's a backstory style story that takes place before he left the army (1996) and is set primarily in Hamburg Germany. Kind of a window into the character before he's an American drifter.

I love Poutine as well, and if anybody puts it down, I will not go to their movie either. Good on you and your stance!
