I'm jumping the gun by quite a bit, but the 2106 season is over, the 2017 season has started.

The Texans traded/will be trading QB Brock Osweiler to the Cleveland Browns.

Texans trade quarterback Osweiler to Browns

Good riddance. So of course now he'll turn into a great QB for whatever team ends up with him; hey, it could happen . Even after reading a few articles I'm not sure what's in it for the Browns, but that organization has long history of making questionable decisions.

Should the Texans pursue Tony Romo? Tough question to answer. A Romo slowed by injuries & age is still better than many QBs in the NFL. But is he better than the defenses he'll be facing? The key word is injuries. Has Romo became injury prone, or was his last back injury just bad luck? I say brittle and injury prone, and he has lost more than just a step over the past two years.

The Texans needed a QB before trading BO, now they really need one. I don't see Romo as the answer.

You beat me to it. I kept meaning to make a thread all day but got tied up.

Lots of big news today. Like you mentioned, Osweiler to the Browns, basically just to move some picks and cash around. My hunch is because it means the Texans are freeing up cap space to work on a trade for Romo. I think Romo ends up in Houston or Denver. Either is possible, but I think Houston is the most likely spot. They are a team that has all the pieces to compete in the AFC except a QB, and having Brock didn't solve that problem anyway. My belief is that there is handshake deal probably already in place with Jerry Jones. It makes total sense, as he's basically said he'll take care of Romo even if it means trading him to a short list of teams he'd want to go to. Houston is primed to win, close to home, and would be a good fit. Denver is a possibility for most of the same reasons (not as close to home, but an easy flight), but their O-line isn't as good, and Romo needs protected.

Honestly, if Houston ends up with Romo, I think it is their best bet to win in the next two years. No one else is available that is proven, and in 2-3 years the window will likely be closed. An after thought might be Jay Cutler, who also got released. He's a bit of an enigma, but at least is a proven starter if they can't get the Romo deal done.

Bears look to be getting Mike Glennon, who has proven he can play a little. We'll see if he's anything beyond average, but they were ready to move on from Cutler. I could see Cutler ending up in SF or on the NYJ as well.

We'll see, but I expect another big move in the next 3-4 days.

The Texans are in a the-future-is-now position. In a way it reminds me of them back in 2012. Romo is the best on a very short list of decent (???) QBs, but can he stay healthy? I would get a kick out of Romo winning a SB with the Texans, it would a great Fug You! to jackass Jerry. Well, for me. My understanding is the Romo-jones bromance is still going strong.

But I'd prefer the Texans to land a long-term QB.....and win the SB.

The big issue, which I brought up a couple times in last season's thread, is 'what long term proven winner QB is available?' They simply don't hit the open market unless they are old in NFL terms, coming off a major injury, or both. In the last 15 years or so the only really good QBs (long term winners, can lead you to SB) I can think of that switched teams and won where they went were Peyton Manning and Drew Brees. Peyton was old and injured, Brees had a nasty shoulder injury (couldn't even get Miami to medically clear him to play when they tried to trade for him) and hadn't really proven himself fully yet.

The reason guys like Brock Osweiler get so much money, that so many teams want to trade for Jimmy Garoppolo, and why the Bears are going to guarantee Mike Glennon ~$20M is because there are no proven QBs available, basically ever. And about 3/4 of the 1st round picks teams get fail within a few years, and most of the rest who make it don't really end up quite as good as everyone hoped (Alex Smith, Sam Bradford, David Carr, etc.).

Every time anyone says "team X should go get a proven QB and then they'll be set" or "instead of signing Y they should've gotten a top ten QB so they could win now" I always reply "which QB that is available do you have in mind? I've asked that question probably a dozen or more times. So far no one has an answer. :p :D

So while I agree that Romo as QB of the Texans isn't a slam dunk for leading them to the SB, I do think he's the best choice available. And I do think that, if he stays healthy, they'll win the AFC South and be set up for a strong playoff run. The trick will be making sure the O-line is in good shape and getting the ball out of his hands quickly so he takes less hits. That, and convincing him Houston is better than Denver. I do think Jerry Jones will give Romo some voice in where he's traded, maybe even letting him meet with teams that are interested. I think Elway is a good salesman, has the QB chops himself to impress Romo, and can point at the last ring Denver won and say "I'll do for you what I did for Peyton". That's a strong pitch.

PM was way past his prime, Denver's defense carried them to the SB win.

TR is way past his prime, Houston's defense could carry them to the SB.

    Hmmmmmm.

That or cut him to free up cap space. I've heard both. Will be interesting to see.

That supports what @Borla has posted, no truly good QBs available, so mediocre/unproven QBs get big money.

I've mentioned this before, but it fits now.

Before his meltdown after the loss to the Patriots in 2013, Schaub was a very highly rated QB. IIRC correctly number five (six?), but that is misleading because there was a wide gap between him & the QB above him; the gaps between the higher rated QBs were much narrower. The Texans got cocky, and got their asses kicked. After that Schaub started falling apart, especially in 2014, and he has never recovered (or wasn't that good to start with).

I think the trade for BO was absolutely brilliant for the Browns.
The Texans were going to take it up the a** no matter what, keeping him or unloading him.

I'm curious, how is it "absolutely brilliant" for the Browns? About the only way I see it working out well for them is if they makes some deals to end up with many draft choices, & are able to find some keepers.

If the Texans are able to put the extra salary cap money to good use--much easier said than done, esp. needing a QB--the Texans might not be screwed. At one time Rick Smith & the scouts had a knack for finding under-the-radar players (many of whom were eventually signed away by other teams, namely the Ravens and the Eagles), but he now has many critics. Hopefully he has a good plan in place.

Mentioning Rick Smith.....I've been a fan, and over the past few seasons a defender.

BUT if the Texans don't make some moves to improve significantly--a good QB would be ideal, but extremely difficult, so the improvements might be at other positions--this season, he needs to move on. His Teflon coating, which he definitely earned early on, has worn thin.

Absolutely brilliant for the Browns, doesn't imply absolutely horrible for the Texans.
The Browns got a guy who may be a decent QB, at a reasonable price.
They can try him out, then if they don't want him, cut him, while making off with a second rounder for next year.
    What's not to love?

It still sounds risky, IMO, unless BO makes a miraculous turnaround. If he flops, again, doesn't The Trade depend on if BO's money is still guaranteed? Relative to the Browns salary cap position? On that note, I think I read that the Browns had/have plenty of salary cap money to spend.

    This.
They have no cap pressure. If he sucks and they cut him it won't affect their ability to sign other players.

Romo is headed to the announcers booth. I think that makes the most sense for him for his physical health. I strongly suspect that jackass jerry is glad the possibility that Romo might perform a miracle with another team has been removed (for now, on paper, because one never knows if he could be enticed back under the right circumstances).
