I don't mind facebook. Most of my friends, and all of my family, live in a different state, so it's an easy way to keep up. If someone posts too much shit, I either filter them out (useful for family members whom I don't want to upset), or unfriend them. I try to post fun, interesting things, but I'm sure there are people who don't give a shit about my dogs, or the fact that it's karaoke night, or that the zoo has a new baby giraffe...and that's okay. They can filter me out or unfriend me. No harm, no foul.

Why you got to be getting me in trouble? Don't you know that @zombiesquirrel can tackle me like a linebacker?

On another note....I think my friends on FB who are big Trump supporters blocked me or unfriended me because I don't see as much on there anymore. OR the logarithms of FB made it so I don't have to see their posts.

I'm kind of against that. This myopic view of life isn't helpful. I unfriended someone because of his posts. Not because he's a bigot....because he turned out to be a bigot and it made me sad. I loved him dearly, but I was actually losing sleep over it all.

It pains me to agree with you, but you are right. Social media and the internet seem to often spark confirmation bias more than critical thinking.

I was wondering recently if FB's algorithms got switched up, or if people that haven't posted for a while are suddenly posting a lot again. My newsfeed is full of people I haven't seen post in a while, and a couple of them are the "share something inane every 30 seconds" kind of people.

I bumped them back to the acquaintances list, but I don't remember moving them to begin with. Weird.

  6. Wednesday, September 27th, 2016: Borla agrees with ZombieSquirrel....Finally. She's always right, so it was about damn time.

When I did see the posts I didn't agree with, I would scroll, scroll, scoll, which wasn't good either. I forced myself a few times to try. It was hard to read some of the crap, but I did. I don't think I learned much other than it reaffirmed my priorities.

Ah, I see what happened. There used to be a "see less of this person's posts" option, which was the default for my acquaintances list. That does not appear to be an option anymore; instead only "see first," "see posts as usual," and "unfollow but remain friends" are available now. How irritating.

    Yep.
My temperament was not well-suited to Facebook. I actually had one meltdown about it and realized I was the problem, so I deleted my account.
I use both Twitter and Instagram and I enjoy both. Neither brings up bad feels like Facebook did. I realize Facebook serves a different purpose and I don't yet have a need for it despite a moment of thinking 'oh hell' and signing up for Facebook again to access my Instagram account. Facebook just sits there waiting for me to have a use for it, instead of the other way 'round.
Social networking devices are indeed tools--you make them work for you or discard them. They have no power over you.

Must be "my" problem, the older (81) I get the more I fiind that I generally dislike people...I find that I no longer give a shit about what they say, or what they think.
I guess I'm getting to be one of those Crusty Old Bastards....

Update: Went back to Facebook. Have 5 "friends." I remain a somewhat detached observer in that I'm keeping it down to friends and close family and strictly speaking, I only have one friend. Anyway, I went back in time to glimpse to the disastrous way so-called news is distributed on FB. Turning to Twitter also was like stepping into a virtual cesspool. Instead, I'm taking advantage of holiday specials and have subscribed to the New Yorker and Washington Post. Otherwise, I search and sift through links on my own. Still very much enjoy TV'S talking heads like John Oliver, Sam Bee, et AL. In summary, my sparse FB has no drama because few people are allowed in. Kind of like my life, I suppose.

It was unbearable for the last 6 months because of the election. No one respects other people's positions, it's all I'm right- you're wrong.

I imagine that if you have more than 5 Facebook friends it is pretty bad on Facebook right now. I pretty much know the political positions of my five, so nothing in my FB stream really, has fazed me. I did reclassify a relative from "close friend" to "friend" after Trump won, as the gloating was a bit strong. The tenor no doubt has morphed in the ensuing weeks. Friends works for now.

Some of my high school classmates get into spirited discussions over various philosophies, and the fur really flies sometimes. I always stay out of it until it seems levity is required to smooth any ruffled feathers, at which point I usually post something like this:

Got another friend request from a former high school classmate; this one is a slight head-scratcher. He is pretty much the definition of "neutral party", as I recall no negative encounters with him, but at the same time he is not what I would consider a stalwart companion.

Probably will sit on this one for a day or so to mull it over. What continues to make this informal high school reunion so highly amusing to me is that I continue to get requests from my male classmates, but not a single one from any females. To do so would be unthinkable, of course. ;)

I don't FB, but one of my sisters is very active there. Her being a Trump supporter didn't surprise me (she's not very bright), but her being a gloater & baiter on FB after the election did surprise me.

I'm a FB whored unfortunately. My business is a huge part of that and a large part of how I make a living.
