Friendly country or not, being spied on by a country that flies under our radar (ha...ha...ha) would be taken seriously. We got caught tapping phones in Germany, which is one of our allies.

On that note--I wonder how many people didn't fully understand the Trump hiring Nazis meme?

My crappy pun, or the meme? Never mind, don't answer that :D (I'll take little victories, real or imagined).

I confess, I didn't know who the woman in the meme was until I read a news story.

If you are worried about how your own press is covering things, you should look to other sources of stable reporting. BBC has World Wide coverage and isn't beholden to advertisers. Outlets such as Monocle 24 (online radio and podcasts) provide international perspectives that are not beholden to ratings points and ad dollars.

I haven't actively watched cable news in many years, and cancelled the news package from our cable provider.

Read magazines (online and off) that do more responsible reporting, such as The Atlantic, The New York Times, etc.

TV News, in the last few decades, has done more to dumb down the viewing public than anything else.

Ok, this is where my conservative side comes out...
I do NOT care if everyone spies on everyone.
    That's intelligence.
    So be it.

The key point is whether the country is actively
    - influencing
    - interfering
    - leveraging

Russia does not ONLY collect but aggressively acts
Taking land for their own gain, manipulating markets, interfering with elections, etc and so on...

China is aggressively stealing and hacking

I'm concerned with when a country interferes with another.

Sure people may collect info on me
But what would piss me off is when they start interfering with my life. Steal from my house. Run off with my ideas. Take my land.

    -----------

On the media side...currently, they're watching The Trump Show (like the Gong Show)
So this is playing right into Putin's hands...distractions and decoys from his other ploys & activities. (we're chaos in our house, so we don't notice the thugs in the neighborhood)

If Americans should be pissed at anyone...we should be pissed at ourselves.
We're the one that voted in the current leadership, prez and congress (and NOT voted too)
We're the ones watching the tabloid media.
    Dropping the ball.
    Shooting ourselves in the foot.

Watching "reality TV" not paying attention to actual reality.
