Shit!! I just chased a stray cat away from the mourning dove nest. I don't know how long it had been in the tree or if it had reached into the nest. From what I could see it didn't have a bird in its mouth, but I don't see the babies. Hopefully they flew away already. I know momma bird was starting to spend less time with the babies; if I don't see her returning to check the nest maybe that means the cat reached an empty nest.

And that is why my cats are indoor cats. I prefer to keep birds and my cats safe. Cats can decimate songbird populations.

Mourning doves update (y'all are dying to know, right? Right? :p):

Yesterday afternoon I saw an adult MD with two babies sitting on our telephone line; don't know if they were the same ones from the nest. Around dusk I spotted the stray cat walking around our back fence. I mean it no harm (our old indoors cat was an outdoors stray), but I do wish my dogs would scare the living shit out of it to drive it away.

This morning momma and one baby (that I could see) were back at the nest. Right now one baby is alone sitting on a branch by the nest. Hopefully, but not likely, the cat has lost interest in the nest now that the babies can fly.

I forgot about this....Years ago when we used to go camping one of the state parks, Guadalupe River SP IIRC, had a serious problem with feral cats. Because the park wasn't that far from San Antonio, folks would dump unwanted pets there. According to one ranger pet cats are more difficult to catch than pet dogs because the cats turn wild quicker. Which make sense to me since many pet cats treat their owners as being optional :D.

Turns out the chubby little groundhog is a SHE, and she was pregnant. We have four, possibly five, groundhog younglings running about. There also seems to be a bunny family hanging around.

    The pups are not amused.

Protip - Never get 'chubby' and 'pregnant' mixed up. Makes for really bad times.... :p

Looks like we have a Mr. and Mrs. Hawk (or as I like to call her, Ladyhawke) hanging around our place.
He seems to be the more mobile of the two. I only see her every once in a while.

We also have a couple of doves. Not sure what kind.
The usual varieties of birds, bluejay, cardinals, mockingbird, plus a whole shitton of blackbirds that seem hellbent on starving the next door neighbor's dogs by stealing their kibble one piece at a time.

Oh, and a stray black and white cat has been roaming the property. Hope the hawks don't kill her, or the doves.

One time, when I was about 15. I knew a friend's older sister was trying to have a baby. She had also gained a lot of weight in a short amount of time. I asked her when she was due....

My current rule is to never assume a woman is pregnant unless I've been specifically told as much by a reliable source, or I see a baby coming out. Otherwise I keep my trap shut.

  14. You should just always keep your trap shut...

    On another note...

Several red foxes and their kits around some wetlands in my neighborhood. Someone claimed to have lost their cat, then it was found.

Coincidentally, I saw a red fox today too, just west of Iowa City. I saw him trot across the highway several hundred yards in front of me as I was driving, and I wasn't sure if it was a large cat or a small dog. As I got closer he turned and jogged along the shoulder and I got a great look at him.

We have deer, turtles, raccoons, possums, rabbits, we had a rough car feral population going. We worked with the human society and did a catch & release and got them homes in places. Two were kept around here and sadly one was attacked badly and the vet said he had a 50/50 of living. Well that was a year ago and hes now living with our 5 other indoor cats and hes doing great. His buddy the other outdoor cat we got a home for. The one we decided to keep while hes still very skiddish around people he sits in our lap now and is doing excellent. The other 5 cats have accepted him and they all play together.

Our neighbours (one street over) reported a very large python in their backyard. It's currently holed up under their neighbour's deck.

My immediate response? Bring it to my yard. It can eat the rats living in our composter.
