I think it's great that you make FB work for you.

My fb has gone through some changes over the years.
I'm from the generation that was only a couple of years out of high school when facebook came along.
So we all quickly searched each other and extended family and that's how my fb stayed for years. I've watched my high school grow up and marry and have kids over the years. These are people I wouldn't have kept in contact with without fb. Not that I'm really in contact with them, but i do scan through the occasional baby photos and "like" the occasional life event.
During the years those joke pages emerged and i filled my newsfeed with them, but they quickly got taken over by ad agencies. There were some holdouts that didn't sell their pages and i kept my newsfeed full of jokes.
I started to follow some news pages over the years but it was during the trump/clinton campaign that my newsfeed really filled up with mainly news stories.
I follow any msm or alternative news page i come across and just unfollow the annoying ones. I've also joined some prepper and conspiracy theory groups. It all keeps it interesting.

I've also dabbled in running a fb page for my dads business. Sponsoring some posts and trying to gain likes.

I guess fb is pretty ingrained in my life these days

    Who cares, really?
Had a few episodes I though I'd share:

    - Got a friend request from a former high school classmate (male, naturally!) and I had no idea who it was. Looking at his page, there were others who recognized him, so I asked a mutual friend who the fuck this guy was. Turns out I did know him, he just changed his last name. (This is something a handful of former classmates have done, for some reason.)

    - A guy I've known for almost 25 years unfriended me. Not sure why, I do know he stopped coming around after I became a father. I also did invite him over several times a few years ago, letting him know he was still welcome. At this point though, I really don't give a shit anymore. As the years have passed, the dude is just a kitchen knife away from becoming Norman Bates, anyway.

    - Got a friend request from a total stranger. Of course I declined, and blocked him from sending any more requests. The only thing we might have had in common is that he appears to be a Star Wars fan, but that's no guarantee we would get along. For all I know, he's probably one of those godawful prequel-defending Lucas apologists!!!

This is like Adventures in Babysitting. Except it's Adventures in Facebooking. And it's you instead of Elisabeth Shue. And it's people from your past, not troublesome kids. And your life is directed by chaos and chance, not Chris Columbus (if only!).

I pictured you as Vader in Empire saying that to Luke when he knocked him into the carbonite chamber, but then missed it when Luke force-jumped out of the pit.
But that would make @ZombieSquirrel Luke, and suddenly I'm all confused... and a little turned on.
    - -
When I signed up for FB years back, I decided to use Fremen along with another name from Dune so I wouldn't be bothered by too many people from my past; extended family, acquaintances, etc.
For the most part, it's worked out well. The times it hasn't have probably been due to my own lapse in judgement than anything else.
    As an example...
These past elections really shined a light on some of my uncles and their "Christian" views and values about people.
Which just enforces my policy of not getting into 'discussions' about religion and politics.
It always ends up like the way we played Risk or Monopoly back in the day, a tumped over board and hurt feelings.
Now that I've unfollowed my uncles I don't have to deal with their weird "Christian" posts. For the most part... sigh

FB has just been a fun little diversion that takes a few minutes out of the day of my time.
It got serious recently when the 4 tornadoes hit last weekend in the surrounding counties and killed 5 people.
Along with the deaths, the storms brought a lot of destruction and turmoil.
FB was a meeting place for the local/non-local family members to keep track of important information about what was happening in the area on the news station's live feed.
With my satellite being out, I would have been half blind without FB. I live in a trailer, am somewhat disabled, and can't get around as easily as I would need to without a little prep time. Once again, FB was very helpful.

FB is just a tool. A multi-purpose tool. Not good, or bad. Just what you make of it. Also, there are tools that use FB. Is that an oxymoron? Now I'm even more confused...
Back to thinking about @ZombieSquirrel as Luke...

Giving Facebook another go after about a year off. It is interesting a lil' overwhelming and has several new features. Trying to go in with a curious spirit and light heart this time. Going to avoid the hell out of politics between friends and family, besides I use twitter for politics.:eek:

I subscribe to a few of the nastier right wing click bait fake news pages, partly to see what the people on that side of the fence are seeing on a daily basis (a fuckton of anti-Muslim bullshit) and partly to prove when they are bullshit.
Sure it's just one post in a sea of "We need to kill those bastards." but I hope that every once in a while I can get one of the people reading the crap to think objectively.
Learning to right click on a picture or Google the main phrases is pretty basic and can keep you from looking like an idiot when you share the post.

I have family members that post -to a lesser degree- bullshit like that. :( I think what you're doing is honorable, I cannot do it. Still trying to figure out if it is best to block or ignore family that subscribe to those extreme views.
