Additionally, while some may think the district is overreacting in changing the names of these schools, it is wise to remember that Oregon has a pretty terrible history with racism. We had a publicly active branch of the KKK in the state well into the 1960s.

Considering Oregon was founded to be a "white homeland" I can understand how touchy some of this stuff can be.
Friends who grew up there have told me there were still sundown towns well into the 70's (towns were black people weren't welcome after sundown).
So while it is easy to make jokes, it is also a good idea to recognize some of the history.

    This is exactly it.

We are one of the least diverse states in the union, and that's sad. We have had a lot of economic opportunity in the past, currently, and in the future.

But here's a story that shows our shitty history:

Well, I may have gone a little overboard with the sarcasm. But the way to recognize history is not to attempt an erasure of whatever we (or some aggrieved group) find threatening or offensive. Explanation and contextification (how's that for a word) can do a lot.

Changing place names to the current most "preferred" form and knocking down statues of historical figures is feel-good window dressing and will not change folk's attitudes. We are, for better or worse, stuck with our history. Sweeping stuff under the rug does no good.

"Fellow-citizens, we cannot escape history. We of this Congress and this administration, will be remembered in spite of ourselves. No personal significance, or insignificance, can spare one or another of us.... We -- even we here -- hold the power, and bear the responsibility. In giving freedom to the slave, we assure freedom to the free -- honorable alike in what we give, and what we preserve...."

Considering the shit that went down today I'm beginning to wonder if we haven't done enough knocking down of these fucking statues etc.
Since a lot of the statues and naming's of parks, roads etc, were done well after the war as a way of making it clear that Reconstruction was over and the blacks had better get back in line I'm beginning to feel like we should have taken care of this a while ago.
This shit has been aloud to fester and like an infection it is doing a damn good job of killing us.
My grandfather fought in WW II and I'm damned sure he would be spitting mad that we are putting up with Nazis now.

Tearing down statues that celebrate the leaders of a war of treason to maintain slavery is not erasing history. It's fixing a mistake that never should have happened in the first place. Commemorating these traitors should not have happened 100 years ago. Not trying to Godwin this thread, but the Germans don't need statues of Hitler to remind themselves of past history. We don't need streets and memorials to Jackson or Lee or Jeb Stuart. Those memorials were put in place as a big fuck you to integration and freedom of minorities. That's all it is. Just a constant reminder to those uppity negroes that you aren't welcome here. I bet most of those were going up at the same time black churches were being burnt to the ground.

Toppling statues and changing place names as erasure of history makes perfect sense if you haven't heard of/opened history books.

I would like to see the statues go to a museum and have corresponding statues/plaques to share the other side. I understand both sides of this issue though, and am worried that statues being pulled down in the night is being mishandled and will cause future strife. Vox has a brief and interesting article that links to a timeline from Southern Poverty Law Center of when the majority of statues were put up and it was enlightening for me, may not be for you though if you've a better grasp on history.
