Let's hear it for the man who helped get our perversity started.
...or at least got it out in the open.

Hugh Hefner, Founder Of Playboy, Dead At 91

I know I grew up with Playboy.
I wanted the ladies in his magazine
I wanted to be him. :D

Suave, Intelligent, kind and a gentleman
...not only bringing beauty to the masses...but trying to provoke thought as well.
Yes, I "DID" read the articles too. (just after "surveying" the pictorials...;))

Let's hear about some of the stories about your times reading his brainchild, Playboy
Or anything else of his media empire.

    Iconic...to say the least.
He may not have been a scientist
But he was a leader to a certain extent
And he DID change the world.

One pretty smile at a time
With a robe and pipe.

    My reply...
I always thought there were "Porn Faeries" ...flitting about placing porn in the forest everywhere for good boys to find. ;)

I'm firmly convinced that the cultural revolutions of the '60's wouldn't have happened or at least not happened as soon without his influence. He truly shaped the last half of the century.

I was lucky enough to know someone who had the entire run back almost to the beginning so when I was a kid I read (as well as looked at the pictures) stories by Roald Dahl. Ian Fleming. Gabriel García Márquez. .Margaret Atwood. Haruki Murakami. Ray Bradbury. and Norman Mailer.
I was introduced to the cartoons of Shel Silverstein (before he did kids books), Gahan Wilson (right up there with Charles Adams for horror cartoons, Harvey Kurtzman, and Jules Feiffer.
There was interviews with Miles Davis, Stanley Kubrick, Bette Davis, Siskel and Ebert, Martin Luther King, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Timothy Leary, and one of my favorites when Alex Haley interviewed George Lincoln Rockwell who was the head of the American Nazi Party at the time. (Rockwell said not to send a Jew to do the interview, he didn't say anything about about Alex) The interview is creepy in how much it hits to what is going on now. http://newspaperdeathwatch.com/wp-c..._Haley_interviews_George_Lincoln_Rockwell.pdf

    Exactly.

It's about being human...no matter what you are.
    Passion.
Sucking the marrow out of life.

We all have the same planet, the same genome, the same history (in length)

What people kill each other over is a divergence of minute fractions.

We all shit, eat, breathe, etc...and we're naked often (but alone, living in shame because of some arbitrary rules some stiff folk made up years ago...)
And most of us have sex...some more, some less.

He taught me sex wasn't bad.
    It was to be appreciated.

    Nudity wasn't bad.
The beauty was to be admired. (and believe it or not...some LIKE to be admired) ...male or female, gay or straight...and all shades inbetween.

    Ahead of his time.

  7. I don't know how I feel about this...I heard he was in fact a misogynist dick. Good for him if it's not true and women were actually happy and empowered in his complex. I'm just not finding a lot of information that supports that.

A lot of great writers contributed to the magazine. He was important to men and women when they're were figuring out their sexuality. I just don't think I can celebrate the man until I have sufficient data to make me feel that I can.

This is some straight "All Lives Matter" bullshit right there. He was ahead of his time in *that* regard!

I've been a fan of Playboy since the 1st scandalous issue I held in my hot little hands. The art, cartoons, short fiction, and especially naked ladies makes it a nostalgic love for me. [IMG]

Some of the most interesting articles came from Playboy, Hustler, Screw, and other alternative publications that pushed mainstream media's edges and boundaries.

Funny, how one will say opinions about Hef now that he's dead, but don't rail against the same standards for TFP, pornhub, etc. I mean naked girls are naked girls right?

    No way, man.

First of all, they are naked women (hopefully).

Who holds the power? In the case of TFP, our original posters anyways, there is no money involved so no exploitation of labour, and the board is very accepting of all bodies. There's no pushing of one particular body-type. As far as the small influencer of culture that is the TFP, things seem to me to be on a good path. Even Pornhub has a much broader representation of body types, orientations and gender roles than Playboy did.

Hef's empire was only interested in a few body types, and was a much, much, much, much louder voice than TFP in normalizing that. As well as pushing a certain standard for women, he also pushed a certain standard for men, i.e. a toxic one.

I won't deny that some decent interviews came from Playboy, but that doesn't negate the problems of that institution.

sure but back in the day they had X pages to fill and not a single page more. These days dead tree editions have the same limitations but onlines don't. I but the original content creators do their own things with their own niche and demographic. So while it's more vast representation, they still silo to a niche.

It would be easy to say that he left a very mixed legacy.
Did the positive outweigh the negative?
I suppose it depends on your perspective and how you want to take certain things.
He was an asshole in many ways and there were definite issues with his philosophy but to compare him to a Muslim fanatic, that is ridiculous.
Since he has passed away I will celebrate the contributions, acknowledge the faults and allow him to rest in peace.

I've not read the awful stuff yet. May yet do so, but there are enough horrors with which to occupy my mind that I would not be able to process the feelings from the new information.

I was about 7 when at a friend's house she took me into her parents bedroom and showed me her father's dirty magazines. My evil stepfather had magazines too but we hated each other so I never touched 'em. Now this friend knew how bad things were at home, and she had me over enough that her parents treated me like one of their daughters. So there we were flipping through one erotic magazine after another and well... we'll leave that story there in my memory.

What came of it really is that women's bodies were a major turn on, and that my friend's dad OWNING those magazines was also a heart skip a bit style fascination and led to a lifetime of arousal. I celebrate nudity, revel in it, draw, paint, and sculpt it, if not for Playboy and similar soft core publications I would be even more broken than I am.

  17. It's not so much the "naked girls" it's how he ascertained the photos of the naked girls. I don't have enough information either way, but there are enough tales of exploitation to have me question his motives.

To the argument of "back in the day" argument toward body types. What took him so long to stray away from a certain aesthetic? His brand had enough equity that it could have survived an issue or two with different women.

Whenever porn (tasteful, pinup, soft, hard, ect) is brought up, there is always going to be a side that says that it exploits women and that there should be no porn. There is also the side that women feel empowered showing their bodies off. There is always going to exploitation in the industry (or any industry) but there are a lot of people that support actors/models in their pursuit of fame in the industry. For some people it would be being a Playboy Playmate and some it's winning the Best Anal Scene at the Adult Video News awards.

Mainstream porn is always going to be the same thing. Photoshopped women that are way too skinny for their bodies or made to look that way. Without Playboy or Hustler, we would never have all the genres of porn we have now. There is literally every body type on the internet and many proud women showing off their bodies to a fan filled audience. A lot of control of what they do have been pulled away from big companies and put into the hands of the men/women who star in their own niche.

Hell the magazine "Perfect 10" was made just because the owner's wife was rejected from playboy.

Hef did say he never met Marilyn Monroe before he bought the pictures. There have been reports she was upset about the photos appearing again in public (they were for a calendar shoot) but it did boost her career. Was it legal? Yes. Was it cool? Not so much, but then this was the 50s. A lot of shit back then isn't cool now.

I say that if it doesn't hurt anyone and has consenting adults, let them do whatever they want. Like it or hate it, Hugh was a driving force in the industry that might never gotten mainstream if not for him.

I also did not know the AVN had a major award of "Transsexual Performer of the Year". Awesome.

[Edit: I'm censoring myself. No attacks.]
