I recommend The Revenant as an entertaining light read, esp. if you like western adventure novels. Punke is no Laura Hillenbrand (it'd be nice if we had more writers like her), but he manages to mix known facts, information generally accepted as fact, tall tales, and his own fiction into some very readable historical fiction. I did a fair amount of research on Hugh Glass before I started the book, and I haven't seen the movie (apparently very few people have or will), but even with potential spoilers in my mind I still enjoyed the read.

    I’m reading “Vallista”
A book that is drawing me in and through it like a good one should.

It’s by one of my favorite authors, Steven Brust
    Actually my favorite now...
Since one is dead and the other stopped

I’ve been reading him for YEARS
Since this is the 15th in the Vlad Taltos. (tal-tosh )
    Starting with Jhereg in 1983

I likely have described them before to you
Because I wait for his books like fans of GOT do for the next season

    They’re shorter books, quick reads
But flow easily, like talking to a best friend.

They read like those old-school Spencer detective novelettes
Told in first person by our hero, a sarcastic irreverent Assassin/Witch/Gangster
Whose right-hand man is his familiar, a sarcastic irreverent dragonette called a Jhereg
Which is his House, his father bought “nobility” into...
the Jhereg, which acts like the Mafia, in comparison to the other more noble yet likely more corrupt Houses in the empire

The Dragerrian empire is made of mostly tall very long lived “humans”
Who the humans or Easterners call elves.
Our hero is a human living amongst the elves, with a bit of resentment and racism
But he is friendly with many of them
Including some of the most powerful
    Most being serious Sorcerers

This series has a great usage and mechanics of Witchcraft, Sorcery, Necromancy, Psionics and more...
Oh yeah, the Gods are directly involved too
And our hero “worships” (if you can call it that) a demon goddess
Who “messes” with him periodically to his ire.

The banter is wonderful, humor, sarcasm
The style of writing is incredible quality and complex yet smooth to read
Starting light...getting deeper and more twisted with each book
The character and environmental development is awesome
You feel like you’re experiencing someone’s life, inside his head.

Our hero solves complicated mysteries and corruptions amongst the Houses of beings who live 1000s of years with all the depth and actions that happen in those years.
He has a “knack” at it
And an uncanny way of getting involved and getting out alive
Much less a little “coaxing and manipulation” by some VERY powerful players
    Both now, past and future

Hope you get into it...you won’t regret it
I just wished he wrote faster.
But then it likely wouldn’t be as good or juicy

I think I ploughed through them 3 times in all. So very good. I also did the Dune trilogy 3 times before moving on to the new books.

so many books, so little time.

The Pretender by Marc Ruskin, good book detailing undercover work for the FBI. This guy goes into detail on how they survive dealing with some really bad people in close range with no back up..

Just finished Swiss Family Robinson forgot how good the old ones was..

  7. Reading--or more accurately said, listening to--THE CODEX by Douglas Preston. I'd never heard of it, and took a flyer on it at the library. Not very good, but when I start one, I tend to finish it.

Also heard THE ROOSTER BAR by John Grisham last week. Typical Grisham--meaning entertaining--but I found myself rooting against the main characters probably a bit more than I should have.

  8. I picked up the audio book of FALSE IMPRESSION by Jeffery Archer. As I started it, I thought "this sounds very familiar." After finishing the first disc of the five, I am quite sure I listened to it a few years ago. But I remember so little of it, it's almost new to me!

I read The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. It dovetailed nicely with a lot of the reading I've done this fall on mindfulness.

I frequently have to read several different parts of a book to figure out if I've read it. And I really need to make a list of the Tess Garritsen novels I've read because it has reached the point where I can't trust my memory.

This wont make any best seller list, but having worked in the Senate for two years in the '80s and knowing the author through mutual acquaintances, I just started reading "When the Senate Worked for Us: The Invisible Role of Staffers in Countering Corporate Lobbies."
