Star Wars Episode VIII : The Last Jedi

Its not the worst Starwars Movie ever. But its close. Its a hair above Phantom Menace.

The problem with TLJ to me is that it fails on all levels but visual.

It looks like Star Wars, its pretty, the cinematography is great.

Thats the only praise I can have for it.

Lets take out the force political narratives, feminism, or any other pandering. Thats an essay to itself but it just doesn't matter because you could have all that an still have a competent movie.

This was not a competent movie.

The story was bad on just about ever level. The plot lame. The whole set up baffling (where is the Republic), the pacing awful, the jokes not fitting, deus ex machina BB8, poor, no awful character development, hell I could go on and on but its not worth it for this movie which is why I linked a video which had 90% of my complaints.

But in a way thats not the main problem. The prequels were pretty awful story telling.

    They did "kill Star Wars".

They made everything, literally everything done prior not matter anymore. NOTHING accomplished by the original 3 matters now. They wiped out everything that was Star Wars except the one character who didn't die, who actually did die in reality.

Basically it was a giant FUCK YOU to the fans. It pissed on any theory anyone had from TFA (which wasn't a great movie but I figured it was a good set up for the future, wrong), it destroyed Luke Skywalkers character, or as Mark Hammel called him "Jake Skywalker" since he couldn't picture Luke acting that way. It just pissed away anything you liked from the originals and then rubbed your face in that piss.

They fundamentally changed what the force was (no more training and control, nope you just got it) and its not just with Rey but Leia doing the Marry Poppins was the worst thing I've seen in a movie in terms of are you fucking me. I would have walked out if I wasn't watching with friends (I was bored by this point anyways).

I could go on and on about WTF's in the movie.

Luke just wants to die ... but made a map to find him?

The New Republic lost everything to the New Order ... in like a week?

It starts with a Your mother joke? Yes Disney people did like Guardians of the Galaxy, different IP.

The kid at the end uses the force to get a broom? (I caught that one in the theater) while showing the ring you should buy (and why would the rebel symbol need to be hidden, the new republic JUST fell, thats like hiding the American flag in the US in a red state).

The force Rose/Finn sub plot where they say its "worth it" to let the horse thingys out, WHILE THEIR FRIENDS ARE ABOUT TO DIE, and then the end with Rose dooming them all with the stupidest line ever about saving those you love, as those you love are dying.

    Not hearing about autopilot...

Bah I could literally spend hours doing a full point by point break down of this movie, I honestly can't get how anyone who kept their brain turned on could like it, especially if they were a starwars fan to start.

Funny thing is I'm not even a huge Star Wars fan, I just know the story from the first three and internet Osmosis, and I'm pissed a bit how badly they fucked this up.

Considering there was an entire movie made to fill in one of the most debated plot holes in the Star Wars universe I have to say they are a feature rather than a bug.

Many of the things that you are upset about were set up in the previous movie.

Luke off and hiding on a planet (he didn't hide the map, it was a map of the Jedi's most sacred planet that R2D2 had and no one else did) was part of the last movie.

The New Republic losing ground to The New Order was mentioned a number of times.

Speaking of foreshadowing, the being able to track ships through hyperspace was one of the tech that is mentioned when they are looking through the lists in Rogue One.

Rose and Finn's visit to Cantonica was an interesting look at the culture that had developed with the two sides fighting for so long and who had benefited from it. Did it work as a subplot? Meh, YMWV but I liked the idea of the kid with broom having force power. He was on a planet where I'm sure any suggestion of support of the New Republic was like talking about a union and back in the days of the Jedi they went out to find kids like him but that doesn't happen anymore.

Rose stopping Finn from killing himself depends on if you believe he would have taken out the cannon. To me his sled was melting well before he got close. I don't think he would have made it and his death would have been a waste so she saved him from a pointless death.

The humor was not to everyone's taste but how different is that from C3PO running around acting like a ninny? Comic relief is comic relief.

Yes, this was a start things over again. Disney has pretty much made it clear that they have had every intention of doing that and the movie was just a small way of doing that. Comic books have been doing that for decades. Star Trek did it. People just need to get over it.

While it was a decent looking movie, they needed some Star Wars nerds helping them to write the plot and script. It looked good, but way too many plot holes and trivial mistakes. So the First Order can track you through Hyperspace like Battlestar Glactica Cylons, then write in enough fuel for a few jumps. Not a slowspeed chase where they can see everything and just lob green blobs at the shields. Why didn't the smaller ships use their one hyperspace jump to go someplace and split up?

The "police" should have intervened after they had talked to the Casino guy. And for a parking ticket? Have them crash into something and run away or something... Would the Casino guy have turned them down or not, who knows? Why didn't they go back to the ice world Hoth from Star Wars V for the planet they escape to? Why invent a whole new planet instead of creating some secret abandoned base? Why didn't Leia get killed off in this movie, either by drifting through space or by being the one to kamikaze the ship?

And Luke was a mess, his attitude was a problem. Yeah the Kylo & Luke backstory was good, but who knows why Kylo and Rey are telepathic...was it Snoke? Did this happen in any other previous movies? I do appreciate that Snoke wasn't a giant Harry Potter character this time.

Snoke says that he set up the connection between the two of them both as a test for Kylo and a trap for Rey.
I wondered about the splitting up part myself, because the lead shop would only be able to track one of them at a time.
The director said that he didn't want to kill Leia off in the movie. He felt she deserved better than that and didn't want the movie to center around her death.

I wonder if Leia has a role to play in the next movie then. If he didn't want her to die in this movie, I can understand it. But, I wish he wouldn't have almost killed her then.

Personally, I'd like them to have the uber evils guys actually have some power level and chops, like Palpatine in "revenge"
And I like what they did with Leia...good to see she "learned"
But I don't like what they did with Luke...too whiny. (shit happens...get over it)

Well, I wanted to see the Jedi order defeated so that was a letdown, but the movie was pretty good in my opinion. Stuff happening and it had the Star Wars feel to it. Nice seeing some old characters in their later life.

That one about football fans is interesting because there really has been a lot of change among HIF supporters if comparing the 2010's to the 00's. Out of the bigger clubs in Sweden we were probably the fanbase which relied most heavily on absolute commitment. These days if our regular fans gets attacked by a mob in Stockholm or Gothenburg they'd be easy pickings I fear and the exceptions are either so called "ultras" (which in itself is a deviation from the classic hardcore mentality) or they're just oldies doing a little back to the roots thing. So many are missing though. That's the problem really. How everything is scaled down to an abysmal size of what our club should be.

No one really cares about what kind of fan one is. Either you're a fan or you're not. It doesn't matter if you are a hyper fan, long time fan, new fan, young fan, old fan, traditional fan, whatever. You're a fan or you aren't. It doesn't mean you don't get to have an opinion about the most recent version, play, iteration, decision, whatever about what people are a fanatic about.

Personally, I think that it's a passing of the torch, without a total reboot.

He got to die with some dignity, unlike Solo who died on a bridge because he thought there was still some light in Ben.

If he really didn't like it he would have not bothered to do it after reading the script. Sure maybe the whole ending wasn't there but enough was there.
