This person is the Sound Traveler. He goes from place to place and records the sounds of the city in 360 degrees. It is very cool

There are many times I go to another city and I just take in the sounds. It's just like taking in the sights and the smells but you sit and just center yourself into the sounds paying attention to the smallest sounds you can find in the soundscape.

I used to work in Times Square and go into this subway station on 42nd street daily. All these sounds make me wax nostalgic for the place but at the same time not really because it was so crowded and packed daily.

Can you find your city and help me hear it's heartbeat?

I went to college on the Upper West Side in New York City and lived in dorms my first two years right off Broadway and, afterward, in an apartment a few blocks farther uptown. Many nights freshman year were spent awake into the wee hours of the morning, and the rumbling of the garbage trucks with dawn’s light creeping over the horizon were a frequent reminder I’d stayed awake too late yet again.

The noise—beyond those early morning garbage trucks, there were ambulance, police, and fire engine sirens, plus the constant hum of car and bus traffic and the rumble of subway trains breaking the underground surface onto elevated tracks—never really bothered me, and for that I consider myself lucky. I now live on the north side of a medium sized city at the corner of a major north-south thoroughfare, across the street from a dairy bottling plant, and a few blocks east of the region’s closest medical center. Cue regular emergency vehicle traffic, speeding motorcycles, and milk tanker trucks rumbling by at odd hours throughout the day, night, and early morning... not to mention regular overhead helicopter and small plane traffic en route to and from a nearby airport, plus train horns at the station downtown less than a mile away, and the lunch and clock out whistles from the cider factory across from the station.

Right now, though, it’s all just crickets.

    Hmm....

We live in a residential neighborhood, but traffic noises are common. We're one block away from a major road that's also a state highway, our street is part of a shortcut from that major road to another one. All of that is magnified by living near an airport. Many residents are part of a culture where numerous people occupy one residence. We're near two public schools, and an apartment complex where a large percentage of the residents speak Spanish and have questionable legal residency.

Car doors, traffic, parties, outdoor power equipment, airplanes, the school marching band rehearsing pre covid-19, people talking too loud on cell phones, occasional gunshots, groups of school kids walking to & from school, English, lots of Spanish.

    And much more.

Depends on the day. This morning it was a couple of squirrels that were pissed about something. Last night it was coyotes howling. Yesterday morning, Annie was barking her head off at 6am at a couple of moose outside her fence (the moose ignored her).
