I'm tired of turning the TV on and seeing we've let kids die in bunches. Whether it's at school or in our neighborhoods. Gun ownership is a right I support, but, I DO NOT support any type of semi-automatic or fully automatic guns being in the hands of civilians. They are made for killing and nothing else. Kids, make your votes count come election day. Show these NRA donation loving old men what can be done. VOTE, and make a change.

Do you really think semi-automatic (I am not including fully automatic) makes that much of a difference?

The nuts who choose to use guns are the problem.

I agree it's the nuts, but it's also the guns. Unfortunately, the screening process to keeps the guns out of the hands of the nuts is woefully inadequate. Without the semi-automatic and automatic guns, the nuts don't shoot up schools with a high body count. Unfortunately semi-automatics can be made to be fully auto, so that's why I include them.

I'm not advocating for the removal of guns from current owners. Just no new sales or transfers.

I'm wondering at what point people will start dealing with the one common factor that is consistent with the mass shooters and how that will play out.
    They are all male.

    There are other consistent factors.
A fair number of them have a history of serious problems with women, including beating up spouses and girlfriends.
They usually don't fit into the social scene, even with the outcasts.
This isn't mental illness, this is something else.
Some of the older shooters have had tabs to red pill and conspiracy sites.
The ones who have written manifestos indicate a kind of longing to be recognized that goes beyond the level that can be offered by a normal life.
In that sense TV and video games could be blamed for setting such high expectations but on the other hand most of us understand the difference between fact and fiction so what is broken in these guys?

There are certainly things were can do about our gun culture but that won't deal with the people doing this.
The problem there, is that it doesn't matter what kind of gun they get our children will be in danger.
I think it comes down to how we choose to raise kids based on their gender, or being neglectful of their emotional development.I think there is a major issue with some of these guys not being able to handle the modern age.
Maybe they would have been fine a hundred years ago (or someone with a faster gun or sword would have killed them when they got to be too much of an asshole).
The mental health issue needs to be approached from a different angle.
This isn't the standard issue mental problem.
    It's a whole new animal.
Like one of those weird plagues from Star Trek that turn out to be caused by the society itself.

We are the cause of this and it doesn't have a simple answer.

We--wife & I, no kids--own rifles and handguns, some are high capacity 17+1 rounds semi-autos. If we had children I would teach them to respect and safely handle firearms. If I thought one, or more, of our kids had a problem I'd try to deal with it, and take precautions re their access to our guns. But as most parents learn kids are very good at finding hiding places and getting into things they're not supposed to be getting into.

There are no easy answers. I understand the knee-jerk reaction of calling for gun control, but the fact is the number of shooting deaths in the USA is miniscule compared to the number of guns in the USA. Of course that means little to the folks who have lost family and loved ones to shootings.

I don't believe that gun control laws will stop these shootings any more than making drugs illegal stopped their sale or decreased things like people's faces getting eaten off.

It's mental illness that complicates gun ownership.

IMO, it starts with the need for more research.

What’s Missing From the Gun Debate
    It’s simple: Science.

But there is also the question of why it is easier for a 19 year old to legally buy an AR-15 than to buy a handgun.

Currently, federal law allows licensed gun sellers to sell long guns (including AR-15) to individuals 18 years or older, but one must be 21 years or older to purchase handguns from licensed dealers.

    How does that make sense?

Long guns/rifles are much more difficult to transport (esp. public transportation) and conceal than handguns.

But that doesn't stop the shootings using rifles.

People who crack, either slowly or seemingly suddenly, will find a way to kill if that's what they're determined to do. Certain types of firearms can definitely lead to higher body count, but I'm not sure that a ban on semi-autos is the answer (more like a very small bandage on an extremely large wound).

We have a semi-auto .22 rifle and a pump action .22 rifle that load the same way and have identical capacities. In this case--most certainly not in all cases--a ban on semi-autos would be nearly meaningless because the pump action can be worked almost as quickly as the semi-auto.

First of all, there are NO fully automatic guns in the hands of civilians.
    And, as Chris said

Not true. Regular civilians can (and do) legally own fully automatic weapons once they've cleared some hurdles.

And as Mr.MD069 posted "semi-autos can be made to be fully auto."
Some gun manufacturers make it so easy there is no doubt it is intentional.
Some gun manufacturers take complicated tamper resistant precautions, which some firearms enthusiasts treat as a challenge (helped considerably by some companies that make after-market parts).

The number of automatic weapons in civilian hands is minuscule, and with all the rifles and pistols I have owned over the years, not once have I ever even thought that I would need to convert one to automatic...and in fact, I don't think I have ever come across anyone in all my, considerable, range time that I noticed having a full auto...

The problem is, that kid in Florida was a legal gun owner. Right up until the moment he pulled the trigger.

There is evidently no easy way to "weed out" the "people" who should NOT be able to own/buy weapons.
Unless ALL GUNS were confiscated (nasty word, and NOT POSSIBLE in this country) this has a chance of happening again and again,
What is THE ANSWER....I DO NOT HAVE ANY IDEA.
I will continue to "carry"; would I be able to stop such an occurrence, I hope I never find out.

Forty or fifty years ago there was much less regard for the supposed rights of the mentally deranged to be as free as everyone else. Especially the right to remain free from being in an institution, free to be out in society, free to monitor your own meds, etc.

As my dad and uncles like to point out. In the 1950s and '60s the country was awash with trophies from WWII and Korea. Including so-called assault rifles. Then, and even much later, High School parking lots (at least in small towns on the Great Plains) were full of pick-ups with gun racks. And guns in the racks. In the fall hunting season, cars often had rifles or shotguns in the trunk. My senior year I had a shotgun in my car at school nearly every Wednesday when I went to work at the gun club.

And nobody thought a thing of it.

You'd think with America's love affair with guns, we'd be better in the biathlon. Oh wait, we don't like to exercise. Okay, got it. ;)

I think it’s the combination of shooting, skiing and cold

Most hunters will do Cold...but not ski too
    Most skiers don’t typically hunt
    Not in the US

Hunting tends to be Blue collar
Skiing tends to be White collar
At least from what I’ve seen

My oldest did biathlon in high school.
She did okay but not great.
That is a seriously difficult sport and the guns are really expensive.
