I haven't been able to get into John Irving, Setting Free The Bears just isn't holding my attention.

I'm going to give Nobody's Fool by Richard Russo (I enjoyed Empire Falls) a try,
as well as Black And Blue by Anna Quindlen.
Hopefully one or both will break my No Reading Funk.

OMFG, finally, I said, FINALLY, finished 1984. I really must get back into the habit of reading. I'm spending way too much time on the Roku and YouTube. Started The Scattered And The Dead, Book 2.0. Back to the zombies for me!

Black And Blue was an interesting, but not great, read. I wouldn't label it Just For Women, but in many ways it is. The publishers weren't sneaky, the jacket blurb and the Oprah seal pretty much give this away. The biggest problem I have with BAB is the main character makes a stupid decision with with weak justification, esp. since she knows it will most likely be disastrous. She pays a dear price later, yet never fully acknowledges that her bad decision led to the situation. The last third of the book is weak.

I'm 168 pages into the 610 page Nobody's Fool. I'm enjoying it, but I hope that Russo is through introducing new characters. It reminds me of Empire Falls--write what you know--but some of the characters are much weirder. I'd say Russo is influenced by John Irving (which is mentioned in the cover blurb, which is a connection I would've made anyway, which is most likely of no interest to you :p).

I don't read when depressed. Does anyone else have that problem?

Reading the Alienist by Caleb Carr now.

Yes, most definitely. When I'm depressed reading is too much work. If I do read, the book has to be relatively short, fast paced, & very entertaining.

Please report back on The Alienist, that has caught my eye several times but I've never read it.
Now I'm trying to remember  if I've read any of Carr's other books.

Is The Alienest part of series, or at least partially related to another of Caleb's novels? Something in the jacket blurb is sticking in my mind..........

Moghul Buffet, by Cheryl Benard. Very entertaining so far.

Major score at a thrift store, Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee, and Selected One-Act Plays by Horton Foote.

Moghul Buffet had a very disappointing ending. Some things were wrapped up too conveniently, some not at all, and some were unclear.

I finished Go Set A Watchman. This novel was very uneven. It was supposedly written before To Kill A Mockingbird, and it definitely reads like a first attempt. Example/Semi-spoiler/Teaser: An eleven year old girl being ignorant of sexual intercourse and pregnancy I'll buy, her not noticing what a pregnant woman looks like is totally unbelievable. I'll post more later, I hate making long posts pecking on my phone.

    The Fireman by Joe Hill
Good world building and really creepy what-ifs make for a seriously good set up.
I've liked him since Horns and didn't know he was Stephen Kings son.
