Strange observation -bathroom breaks.

    I work in a government building where there are windows everywhere. My workspace (not desk) has a window facing the common tea room and bath rooms. So when someone walks past you notice.
    It occurred to me that many of the women that are going to the bathroom also use the disabled room instead. At first I thought maybe its full so they duck in the disabled one. But these women (have not seen a male do it) walk straight out of their office and directly into the disabled. Also at times where its not "peak times" such as lunch time..

    Now I can be rather protective/defensive of/towards disabilities and often I'd want to pass comment as to why you are using these facilities (note...there are no disabled people in this area and its clearly a government thing where they have to provide such a facility).


    So over to you women especially... why the preference (excluding other being full).

    I'm assuming cleanliness of bathrooms... of if they are a noisy toilet user they feel embarrassed..... why when you are all in the same boat.

    Is the regular woman's room single or multi-user?
    How about the disabled bathroom?

    First of all, Welcome to The TFP.:)

    But... Women's public restrooms are often filthy places,:eek: in my experience, although I've never been to Australia. Unlike men, every woman sits to do her business, whether #1, #2, or just to pass some gas, she plops her hot, sweaty, padded tushy on a toilet seat. Especially in office building with lots of female employees the facilities are very frequently used and under cleaned. I'll often use a Unisex or Disabled stall, especially if it's the first one that I spot.

    And my other thought is 'Why do you care?':confused:

    Do you not have enough to do? Or, to keep your mind busy? Have you ever seen a disabled person (or any other person) have to stand around nervously waiting for the disabled stall? Is there anything to indicate that the disabled restroom is not to be used by others, like the signs restricting the (overabundant) handicapped parking places?

    You may think you are being "protective/defensive of/towards disabilities" but it seems to me that, if no disabled folks are present, none are being harmed, none are being even slightly inconvenienced you are perhaps looking for an excuse to play "Gotcha."

    Similar to being concerned about folks jaywalking across a deserted street at 3:00am. I believe the idea of "no harm, no foul" would apply here, so why look for a reason to be a buttinsky?

    Is this an area that only has traffic from the workforce in that area? Are the gendered bathrooms multiple occupancy? If so, and if everyone knows that there is literally never anyone who would have the need for the disabled bathroom to be there, I can see the perceived advantage of using what then becomes a private bathroom.

    @michaelyoni64 As a freaking disabled woman I appreciate that you're paying attention to things like this. Even when on crutches without those bars I cannot sit down without risk of breaking my leg- too many screws, bones are fragile from lifetime of surgeries and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. When on wheels I'm there because of passing out problems, pain, or instability, I have no choice but to use a handicapped stall or room.

    All of that said some folks do have invisible disabilities that require use of accessible room. Still others, are bluntly put...assholes. Many people who deal with disability on the daily basis of their lives are tired as heck of the able bodied using the one stall that could actually vastly improve life for another.

    I personally need to have a sink and a toilet in the same private room to clean my menstrual cup between uses.

    Also, I have an invisible disability and I often do better getting up from the slightly higher toilet that is in the handicapped stall.

    never really paid attention to it, but I will say this..... since the majority of people have a smart phone now, we as a whole seem to spend more time in the bathroom than we did 10 years ago. that's my observation.....
