Military bases.

 

Excellent subject, and certainly many cool images.

 

The original Jefferson Davis Hospital, literally built on top of a confederate soldiers cemetery. The name was chosen to pacify the folks who raised hell about it. A much larger hospital and nursing home was built using the same name, and the original building eventually sat vacant for 20 years. Fortunately a preservation group was able to save it from destruction. It's currently artists lofts.










Edit--This is in Houston, which has demolished just about every interesting old building.

Now, you've seen this one before...


...but here it is, RESTORED to brand new again! (Not the same angle, but it IS the same structure, I assure you.)

 

The owners were forced to remove the glass after Hurricane Harvey as a safety precaution.

This building is still standing in downtown Houston. It was a Holiday Inn, then Days Inn, open but in bad shape, when the "Moonies" purchased it, renaming it Heaven on Earth. Their plan was to use the profits from keeping it open to renovate as they went along (a stupid and doomed plan). It eventually closed, and has been for at least 20 years.

I worked in an office building two blocks away when it was open.

 

In Houston, an underground aquifer that was discovered a few years back. I need to research the history. It's not exciting, but kind of cool.

Galveston, TX. The abandoned Galvez Mall was converted to a brewery, but I think that is now closed.



Houston , TX. It looks familiar, might be the abandoned Nation of Islam mosque in the Mid-town area.


Six Flags Astroworld. Now completely demolished.


Ft. Worth, TX. Armour-Swift meat packing plant. It looks like a prison.

 

I think most, possibly all, of these photos show buildings in greater Detroit.
