    Share your thoughts on Kavanaugh,
    (Or on Kavanagh.)

    So...

There is a misogynistic character on Stargate Atlantis named Kavanagh. He gives Weir a rough time, and gets beaten down.

Let's look at that dude who is apparently going to be a Supreme Court Justice in the United States. Kavanaugh.

No one likes this guy, right?

Especially not this professor whom he (allegedly) raped in high school.
    Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, PhD.
Journalists have left off the Dr. Because she is a PhD and not an MD. That in itself drives me bonkers - but I digress.

Here's a bit about the aligations:
GOP plows forward amid sexual misconduct allegations lodged at Brett Kavanaugh

And the outpouring of support from her high school classmates:

This next piece was fun. It relates to toxic masculinity, so I was thinking of putting it into that thread, but I realized it was probably too political.

Recent news article: Spokesman for GOP on Kavanaugh nomination resigns; has been accused of harassment in the past
A snippet from the article: "
Garrett Ventry, 29, who served as a communications aide to the committee chaired by Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, had been helping coordinate the majority party's messaging in the wake of Christine Blasey Ford’s claim that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her 36 years ago at a high school party. In a response to NBC News, Ventry denied any past "allegations of misconduct."

    "
And this article has more information: A Top GOP Advisor Has Resigned After A Report Of Sexual Harassment Resurfaced
    "
A woman on the North Carolina General Assembly Republican staff reportedly accused the 29-year-old of sexual harassment when he was "a social media adviser" on North Carolina House Majority Leader John Bell's staff in 2017, according to the news network.

Additionally, Ventry reportedly embellished his resume, NBC News reported. Ventry's resume reportedly said he held a paid position on Florida Sen. Marco Rubio's presidential campaign in 2016 in North Carolina, despite only working as a volunteer, according to NBC News.

Why do you think no one likes this guy?
Maybe you don't like him, and that's fine. You do understand that other people like him?
I'm not totally wild about his appointment but I'm not raging against it either.
Republicans won the last national election. This is the type of Justice that gets selected when they are in power.
Want different justices? Then the Democrats need to figure out how to win elections.

And I believe the man is innocent until there is some proof he is guilty. He has the right to confront his accuser.
I believe the biggest sin in this affair so far (and I'm sure there are more to come) was committed by Senator Feinstein who chose to hold this information and then use it as a weapon against him at the time when he is least able to defend himself.

I have seen zero positive news on him.
    Care to share some links?

I’m not going to decide what’s positive for you.
Here’s a blog I enjoy reading, with notes on some of his prior decisions.
Judge Brett Kavanaugh on National Security: A Reader’s Guide

There are multiple other articles on that site where you can learn about him.

Whether you like him or not he deserves a fair hearing on this issue and the mere existence of these allegations should not be used to deny him a place on the Supreme Court.

A huge problem with rape and sexual assault prosecution is that the burden of proof is far beyond what is required for murder cases or assault against another man for police to even bring charges against the accused party. Very likely, she was talked out of reporting because “nothing is going to happen to him anyway and you probably said yes and regretted it later.” And the sad part is, the part about nothing happening to him is true in a huuuuuge proportion of rape cases.

I for one am really glad she is coming forward and I won’t be surprised if other women do as well. Rape is rarely a “high school mistake” that doesn’t ever get repeated. Men learn they can get away with it and they keep getting away with it, whether full on assault or harassment.

As I said in my last post.. not surprised.

There is a serious double standard for men vs. women in the legal world. A woman who has been victim of sexual assault (whether reported or not) cannot serve on a jury in a rape case - this disqualifies at least 1/3 of women, based on commonly accepted stats on rape/assault. Yet, a man who has now been accused of sexual assault by (at least) two women can be thisclose to becoming a judge on our highest court and issue decisions that may affect all sexual assault or harassment cases in the future, as well as those affecting women’s rights to make decisions regarding their own bodies, including cases of pregnancy after rape. It’s ridiculous.

Here is another recent piece: All Of Your Pro-Kavanaugh Vote Arguments Are Trash
    Snippets:
    "
    ...
No, Kavanaugh’s vetting was outsourced to the Federalist Society, a partisan organization more concerned with conservative dogma than it is about integrity of the judicial branch. That’s not a knock on the Federalist Society (trust me, when I knock them, you’ll know). It’s simply not their job to do the work of figuring out if judicial nominees represent the best of who we are as Americans. That’s not their “core-competency.” They’re not built for the work that was outsourced to them. It’s their job to figure out how to take away abortion rights and consign minorities and gays to the back of the bus (see). On that, they do a pretty good job.

Kavanaugh was vetted by the Republicans in the United States Senate. That body is also not concerned about the integrity of the U.S. Supreme Court. Unlike FedSoc, one might argue that the Senate should be. But this is the same group of people who refused to meet with a qualified nominee based on allegations that he was nominated by Barack Obama.
    ...
We’re here because nobody responsible to America did their job for America. Trump didn’t, Don McGahn didn’t, Mitch McConnell didn’t, Chuck Grassley didn’t, Dianne Feinstein didn’t. Brett Kavanaugh shouldn’t be in this position, his alleged victim shouldn’t be in this position, and the American people shouldn’t be in this position. All of the people responsible for putting us in this position should lose their jobs.
    ...
This vote has to be stopped. You people need to stop worrying about our lost opportunity at process and start worrying about our shared feelings of common sense and decency. FIRST, figure out if your Supreme Court nominee is an attempted rapist, THEN figure out whether he belongs on the Supreme Court. THAT is the only process that matters now. Anything less is trash.

I have very mixed feelings about this. What I think puts this over the top is K's attempt to silence the girl/woman by covering her mouth with his hand. It just indicates to me that he knew what he was doing was wrong; and didn't want to get found out. On the other hand, this was over thirty years ago. I also know that I, myself, would sure hate for my character now to be evaluated based on some of my actions twenty-five years ago. But I'm not nominated to the Supreme Court.
Do we not believe in personal growth? Call it maturation, redemption, social awakening, enlightenment, whatever. Kavanaugh may, or may not, have the same attitudes now as he did then. Do we know?

I had a conversation a few days ago with my dad, who grew up in the sixties and seventies. He admitted to some behavior that was kind of, not really shocking, but just so out of character. And he and Mom both have always been pretty open about sexuality. The culture of "hooking up" and "get drunk and screw" was just the way it was before #MeToo and also before AIDS.

One of Dad's comments that stuck was that there has been a sea change in what is considered acceptable behavior for men. And that it may not be entirely fair to retroactively apply the "enlightened" standards of today to actions in the past. Legal doctrine of "ex post facto" Changing the rules in the middle of the game.

You know, I can see your point - if he was not trying to also silence her now. But he and the republicans are. So the point is moot. If there were a statement saying “yes, I did this, and I have grown and gone through therapy and sensitivity training etc.” I might accept your point of view there, but instead he is actively trying to prevent an FBI investigation into the event and allegations, while his accuser is welcoming an investigation.

There is also the problem of now multiple accusers. And still no apology or admission for said behavior. He’s just like Trump - deny deny deny - and I am extremely concerned that he will behave the same way on a court even in the face of compelling argument and evidence. We are seeing that saving his own skin and opinion of what is right or wrong is more important than examining his own thoughts and actions and perhaps coming to a different conclusion. Not a quality I wish to have in a SCOTUS judge.

I don't buy that argument. Religion has been around for a long time and has been used to push puritan ideals when it comes to sexual behavior. It has been and still is the dominant force in this country. I watch British TV for example and the stuff on channel 4 wouldn't even get approved for HBO, let alone over the air TV because of the conservative bias in this country.

Yet the most religious are the ones who support this nominee just because he will rule the way they want on abortion, gay rights, and against any other Democratic program or law that gets passed for the next 30 years.

If this was a Democrat, all hell would be breaking out now. Yet it is perfectly acceptable for rich conservative kids to break these laws that have been on the books for a long time. Was he ever charged with underage drinking? How often are aggressive males punished for forced advances? Did he ever have to report being a criminal on a job application? Did he get rejected by any colleges for having a record? Was his life impacted as a teenager that ruined it like millions of other people?
U.S. history of alcohol minimum purchase age by state - Wikipedia

I don't buy the "forgiveness" argument at all. After you are 5 or 6, you know what is right and wrong and you have to live with the consequences of your actions.

Their are enough doubts about Kavanaugh that I would not support him, and I am fairly conservative in some ways.

Well, you know what was taught to you as right and wrong. And what was modeled to you. (Hopefully, the two are the same.)

A six year old Palestinian, a six year old Orthodox Jew, a Catholic six year old in Naples, and a six year old child of atheist gay parents in SanFrancisco will each have a different idea of right and wrong.

Based on their environment and how they are nurtured.

My take is that folks are looking at this as a criminal trial, where we ought to be looking at it as a job interview.

Can we determine guilt beyond a reasonable doubt from an incident that happened 35 years ago? I doubt it.
Is Brett Kavanaugh the best candidate for the job under the circumstances? Those kind of allegations would certainly prevent me from getting a job.
