Trump declares end to US 'policeman' role in surprise Iraq visit

Who cares about the visit...although I support the troops.
It's the Trump declaring the end to US 'policeman' role and pushing America First
To withdraw US from our alliances.

Here we go bit by bit making the US a solitary nation again...like before Woodrow Wilson and WWI.
All that work down the tubes.

And setting up Putin's biggest wet dream. (right after the showing of Russia's new hypersonic missile)

Is this going to lead to WWIII?

It was a mistake not to get it passed in the last congress. I'm not sure what his advisors where thinking, or if they had no ability to change his mind.

But I don't see the government opening anytime soon. Especially since this will have a big impact on which side gets some momentum going into the 2020 campaign for President depending on which side gets their way. I'm waiting for the Democrats to try and get citizenship for the dreamers and amnesty for taxpaying undocumented workers with a pathway to citizenship in exchange for the wall funding... Add in a whole bunch of other changes too. See if he will claim the wall victory, or is too worried that the backlash to the rest of the items will be too great.

Trump's dubious claim of federal worker backing for shutdown is a familiar tactic

Trump wages intense but lonely campaign for his border wall

House GOP leaders fear support eroding for Trump’s shutdown fight

For Some, the Shutdown Isn’t About Politics. It’s About Bills and Groceries.

    So who is for this???
Only Trump...and a few media pundits.

This is all about ego and grandstanding.

Meanwhile Government workers AND contractors suffer.

The only problem he's solving...make sure people get their tax returns (because his base is all about taxes...can't upset 30% of the nation)

** I'm a weird bird in that I like a lot of conservative principle...but I detest the mania that has taken hold of a certain section of the right. (what they're doing and HOW they're doing it)

Hell, many of the ideas that get inacted are from conservative sources...but then they are vicious opposed just because it wasn't done by "their side"

    It's all tribalism now.
    What side.
    What team.
    Colors. (red or blue)

I am surprised people aren't out in the streets protesting this. I know I wouldn't show up to a TSA type of job if I wasn't getting paid. Why haven't there been any problems at airports yet? Are the border and customs people getting paid to bring in shipments and clear people returning from overseas? Do people like working for free?

I just wonder how many paychecks people will have to miss before they quit and look for a private sector job?

And that is the other part of the equation. The small government conservatives probably love that the government is shutdown. This is the "smaller government" that they dream of.

And with the Democrats having no incentive to give Trump a victory he can run on in 2020, I see this lasting a long time. (He has already put out campaign ads and asked for donations about this wall).

Yep...it's a standoff. But the Dems are going to likely win...there are GOP senators breaking.
Trump Is Losing the Shutdown Argument

In the meantime...it's SSDD for Federal workers...

I used to have a government contracting job, but was upset that I still had to work during the government shutdown (we were under contract and had already been paid). At my last job I could have used the free time a lot more than a few paychecks.

    Who Needs a Paycheck Anyway?

They just don't understand why...

Little Lord Fauntleroys probably haven't shopped for themselves in decades

They're called bills...Trump, you're supposed to pay them.

I hope that voters don't forget a couple of things, setting aside whether or not a southern border wall is needed.

    1. Trump promised or guaranteed (I'd need to look up his exact words) that Mexico would pay for the wall.

    2. Trump had this planned. He promised/threatened the shutdown--during a carefully orchestrated meeting to which the media was uncharacteristically invited--before the Democrats had officially taken control of the House.

I don't get that. Most of the contracts should have already been funded and the money in place. The contractor just has to do the job and prove it was done right.

I never got any time off when the government shut down at my last job.

Anyways, on a bigger picture issue, I would think that the Libertarians and the TEA Party folks are very happy that the government was shutdown, and what to see the government be 800,000 people smaller. Having people quit and look for new jobs outside of government is what they would want.

True, some just want to government to fail

I guess it depends on the contract, on many of mine I had to use PTO whenever it shut down, including snowdays.

So on those types of contracts, a month long would wipe out their PTO for the year and put them in the negative...including their sick days.

There are many cheap contractors out there.
    Fewer generous

It does seem like what Putin wants, Putin gets with this administration.
