Time for a new season NFL thread, esp since the initial free agency signings and the first round of the NFL 2019 draft is over.

I'll start with my hometown team, the Houston Texans. There is, or isn't, much to say, because the Texans haven't done much. They made little effort (or failed miserably behind the scenes) to improve the offensive line during FA, and drafted a "prospect.".

I'm no expert, so I'll go by the draft grades I've seen on the interweb, C+ to D-. That's not good.

I had the Texans on a one year "prove it" contract last season. They did better than expected during the regular season, keeping in mind several wins were close against weak teams. And they were predictably predictable in the playoffs.

The Texans have a much tougher schedule this year, and several teams they will play have made improvements since last year.

Unless the Texans have found, and will find, some under-the-radar players, this season is going to be very disappointing.
Maybe they'll be able pick up some good players as cuts are made before the start of the regular season. I'm not holding my breath.

O'Brien and Gaine are on the hot seat.

I'm very happy with the Bills.
This is the best managed Bills team I've seen in the last 20 years.
They picked up a boatload of solid players in free agency without breaking the bank.
And last night drafted a solid defensive tackle, being very fortunate he lasted til the 9th pick.
So if we can get an OT, a TE, and maybe another wide receiver I'm optimistic about the season.
It will come down to Josh Allen developing as a QB, but at least he has a supporting cast now.
I think he will shine this year, now that he has blockers in front of him and receivers to throw to.

the falcons took two offensive lineman in the first round.... hopefully they can keep people off of matt ryan this year.
i was sooooooo glad to see the lions take a tight end. they desperately need one.

thought it was odd that the cardinals traded their 1st round qb pick from last year to the dolphins. not sure who won or lost in that deal. especially since they drafted kyler murray #1 overall... kinda seems like they didnt want to give josh rosen time to become a good qb. but who knows maybe rosen will become the next dan marino for miami

how did the giants forfeit their 3rd round pick? im confused on that

    Richie Incognito.

    The Oakland Raiders.

Why in the hell would anybody sign a nearly 36 year old player who has a long history of mental instability and violent behavior?

Publicity? If so, the wrong kind, IMO.

Now it appears there was an incident where Psycho Richie threw a violent tantrum at the home of his 90 year old grandmother, around the same time of the funeral home incident.

The NFL needs to bounce this guy permanently. And try to get him some psychiatric help. If he refuses help, we can only hope he doesn't kill someone (or himself, to be politically correct).

Did the Raiders know they had an "out" with him? I'm guessing yes.

Richie is a really good guard.
I've watched many players on the line for the Bills over the years and he stands out as the best guard I have ever seen play.
That doesn't mean I would sign him to play again, but I can see why a team would take the chance.

    The Texans fired Brian Gaine.

This' surprising. The timing is odd (which they mentioned in the announcement), and Gaine didn't make it through two full seasons. I'm guessing the new McNair wasn't happy about Gaine's inability to make a deal for an offensive lineman or two.

Last year Gaine could sort of be excused for not doing much; this season he had no excuses. Getting burned by the Eagles in the draft didn't help.

What he did or didn't do behind the scenes will remain mostly unknown. At least O'Brien should now know he's not untouchable.

I've been saying that O'Brien has plateaued. He turned around a bad team, but can't reach the next level. Under OB how many seasons did the Texans not have an offensive coordinator? How many Super Bowl teams in the last 10 or 20 years haven't had an OC? In the playoffs last season the Colts seemed to know every weakness in the Texans' offense, and exactly what plays the Texans were going to run and when.

I hope that Cal McNair has put the fear of The Axe into OB and the entire organization. Two seasons and still no top quality offensive linemen? Unacceptable. As Gaine discovered.

The Texans have an aging defense, and a lot of new veteran (as in not exactly young) faces. What happens with Clowney? What happens if Watt get hurt again and/or suddenly starts showing wear & tear? What happens if the "new" backfield can't defend against the pass?

Suppose Watson decides the Texans aren't doing enough to protect him (an understandable thought), and decides to jump ship?

    I can see:
The Colts easily winning the AFC South.
The Texans (barely?) making the POs, and getting booted early.
    Bill O'Brien getting fired.

Makes you wonder if the raiders will be better off without Antonio Brown.

    Let's go Buffalo!
The Jets gave us a gift today after the Bills played an ugly, ugly first half and got way behind.

I've got a really complicated relationship with football. People who have known me for years know that I played at a high level, at least in terms of Canada... Went through three years of university ball before my body gave out. And let me tell you, I feel it to this day. Post-concussion syndrome, separated shoulder, torn knee. I'm really, really feeling the long-term physical consequences of my time playing. And really, it has coloured how I see the sport. Knowing what we know about head trauma. Seeing how the NFL treats its players. Seeing the shameful political spectacle surrounding the game nowadays. It's been hard to keep up with the sport I love with a good conscience. Nevertheless, I do find myself watching highlights and trying to keep up on the goings on. I just don't have the same level of passion.

I will say that in the last few years the NFL has seem 2 have more of a realization of the concussion protocol. Which is a good thing because many players should not have been playing at certain times in their career. I'm sorry to hear that your body is doing that to you. I would have loved to have played in the NFL but high school was as far as I went guess that's cuz I never went to college LOL.
