    Hi Guys,

Hubs and I, along with our two little girls and German Shepherd are going to be starting the next chapter of our lives with a move down under at the beginning of 2018. As a born and bred southern American...I thought the switch to the UK was hard...needless to say, two years later I managed to get my career back on track ever so slightly and even reclaim most of my prebaby body.

I'm excited about the change but also quite apprehensive. Anyone ever lived in Brisbane before? This will be completely new to me. I am beyond excited about bigger houses and the prospect of no longer doing my laundry in the kitchen.

I know many Aussies but have never actually been to Australia.

I am hoping to go there this year.

    Hi @GhoastGirl2.0
You'll be leaving the UKs winter for Aussie summer at the start of the year!
    That'll be nice. B-)
I live in Australia, but at the opposite side of the country to Brisbane. I'm in Western Australia, up north in the Kimberley region.
I've visited Queensland a few times in my life but mostly traveled the west and center north of the country.

Did you say you're bringing a german shepard? What's it like to travel the world with a big dog? I bet it's difficult?

I'm in Sydney, but my parents are closer to Brisbane than to here (northern NSW). I have been a few times. Get ready for a serious change of climate to the UK. Brisbane is a bit like a big country town compared to Sydney or Melbourne. I work with a lot of UK people and talk invariably turns to the weather - mid winter in Brisbane days still will have a max temp in the high teens/low 20s (Celsius). Do get ready for crappier public transport (London sets the bar pretty high). Australians generally are pretty tied to their car usage.

I can't give you too much info on particular suburbs to avoid - you really need a local for that :(

    Good luck!

Hey Guys...apologies on ghosting this one...so we moved to Brisbane, stayed for broadly 9 months and left due to the visa changes preventing permanent residency. I did enjoy the time there though very much. It was very hot to say the least. Our dog passed away 5 weeks before he was due to join us which was heartbreaking to say the least. Back in the US now though. I really miss the coffee and fresh fruit. It was a nice time and professionally very good for my husband and me.

Don't worry, we managed to have Odie cremated and I brought his home last March when we visited family on the UK side. It happens. Part of life, sad part but a part nonetheless.
The coffee comes from the coffee belt there and is very rich, strong and just different from US coffee. Of course many Europeans (husband included) and Aussies consider American coffee to be weak (which it is). I've had to get used to it over time, but still found some of the stuff to be just too much...but hey...some just like to stand their spoon right in a cuppa...

The Aussie economy is currently going to shit and I would expect the permanent residency requirements to loosen a fair bit in ~3 years as part of the government wanting to attract middle-class (and above) immigrants to inject funds into the country. If you're missing the place a lot and still want to become a resident, you might want to look into it around that time (COL should also go down significantly by then, but you never know with the voodoo market forces over there).

They really tightened the belt on PR bridging. Sadly we were there just when all of that was kicking off. Too much uncertainty to stay in temporary 429 visas with the kids starting school. COL was really reasonable, petrol was cheaper than the UK - although not as cheap as the US. We have no desire to return other than for a holiday. Glad we got to give it a try though. We enjoyed the experience.

I love me some coffee I've had different types but I'm not keen on the kind that you can stand the spoon up in. But if it has a good flavor then I'm okay with it whenever I make my coffee some people tell me that it's too strong for them but to each his own. I cannot recall what it is or where it is from but I know that there is a coffee that is made from bat guano and I've heard it's the best coffee in the world and I would love to try it but I don't know where to find it and I can't even remember what it's called
