Everything Dune

The 1984 film is a visual feast, although a narrative mess, unfortunately. However, I still think of the original film whenever I pick up the series to read.

Every few years I go through the six-book series, and the two sequel books that were penned by Frank Herbert's son (and another author whose name escapes me, I'm writing all this from memory right now) that were based off of notes & outlines left by the late author. (I have a habit or re-reading books I enjoy, but in this case I seem to pick up more details that I didn't catch the first few times around.)

For those interested:

Dune Messiah (book two) - this takes place about 20 years later, and the villains who survived at the end of the original book (plus a few new ones) plot to overthrow Paul Atreides.

Children of Dune (book three) - takes place about ten years later after the sequel, competing Houses plot to eliminate Paul's twin children (Leto II and Ghani) who are heirs to the spice empire.

God Emperor of Dune (book four) - takes place about 4,000 years later, Paul's son Leto II has extended his life span and rules Arrakis as God Emperor and the desert world has become a lush jungle planet.

Heretics of Dune (book five) -takes place about 1,500 years later, the Bene Gesserit try to create another Kwisatch Haderach as a new enemy closes in.

Chapterhouse Dune (book six) - not sure about the timeframe, but I think somewhere between 5-10 years later, the Bene Gesserit are busy creating another desert planet to break the spice monopoly.

I'm probably oversimplifying the plots here, but I don't want to give away certain details. To be honest, I did enjoy the sequel books, although most hardcore Dune fans think of them as "Dune Lite", as they tend to be more straightforward and less nebulous than Herbert's style.

Finally, Dune humor is not as widespread as Star Wars/Star Trek jokes, but still hilarious to me:

 

Okay, perhaps not wholly "Dune", but a mashup couldn't hurt...

And the reason is because he's named Stilgar!

A friend of mine had discovered a thread elsewhere about guinea pig names and it turns out a man who owned several cavys was tired of the same monikers like "Cupcake" and "Mr.Nibbles", so he named all his guinea pigs after Dune characters.

I liked this idea so much, I went the same route for the new guy. His former name was Oreo, and now he stands distinguished among his fellow guinea pigs (and fellow Fremen, dammit!)

Will it be the same without Sting? I don't see the character (Feyd Rautha) credited in the new movie. But Dave Bautista as Rabban. also Javier Bardam (Stilgar), Jason Momoa (Idaho), Josh Brolin (Halleck)

I also enjoyed the prequels immensely. I think I would just like to ingest anything Dune related. My constant thought has been around the Honoured Matres, and there return. They were supposed to be fleeing some incredible danger - And I always wondered why this was an issue in that space is infinite, and if there was danger out in the scattering somewhere, why return? why not just go in another direction? Space is infinite.

I remember really looking forward to the original movie. It felt - thin, somehow.
Just a coincidence that I’m rereading the set now and am 2/3 the way through Chapterhouse : Dune.
I was surprised to find I had mislaid God Emperor of Dune & Heretic of Dune. I had to buy them plus Chapterhouse just a few weeks ago.
I like the idea of The Scattering. It makes anything possible. Infinite baskets for evermore eggs Including eggs that can spank Honored Matres & set them in the corner.

I want to say I was treated to a screening of the 1984 Dune film by the illustrious @pig when I visited him over Thanksgiving back in 2015... but there's a lot I don't remember about that long weekend, so I could be wrong.

 

yes, I watched the movie like a weak-kneed fanboy and I'm sure I forgave a lot of its shortcomings. It's really hard to distill the complexity of the book into a movie. I did find the Children of Dune miniseries from 2003 to be much more watchable.

so wrt the scattering. I'm sure that with the number of returning Honored Matres, there are even more that are heading out into different directions.
