New rifle

I bought this new-in-box Ruger breakdown PC carbine (chambered in 9mm) at my local clubs spring gun show a couple months ago. It takes Glock 9mm magazines (like those that go in my wife's G19) and I can swap this barrel for a factory-threaded one (usable with a ½ x 28 threaded suppressor, which I already own.) This is meant to be the emergency survival rifle I carry in my truck. Unfortunately, I haven't had the chance to put a SINGLE ROUND through it, as this whole SARS-COV-2 quarantine BS hit right after I bought it!

I'm seeing TV ads from Henry for a breakdown .22 semi-auto. Interesting. It looks like the Browning one of my uncles owned back in the early '70s.

We haven't done any shooting in about 3.5 months because I don't want to deplete our ammo supply. Even before Covid-19 the stores around us, including proper gun stores, were short on handgun ammo.

Academy never closed, but I stayed away for three months because I don't view the quarantine as "BS."

About a week ago they were pretty much cleaned out of popular handgun ammo such as 9mm, .40, .380, .38, .357, .38, .22.

They had very limited quantities of "hot" .22, .380 self defense, and .45.

 

I actually have an old Henry AR-7 survival rifle (in .22 LR.) I got it used, again at our clubs spring gun show, many years ago, for ninety bucks. My wife and I (both NRA instructors) were doing gun safety checks at the entrance to the show. This guy walks in with the Henry and says he's looking to sell it. I asked "How much?" and the rest is history. (That AR-7 was the survival rifle for my truck, but I'm trading up with the Ruger. Now, the Henry goes back in the safe until I can think of another use for it.

I feel your pain. My wife and I haven't had to worry about that much, because our ammo stockpile is HUGE. When we were younger, I was the Full-Auto Program Director for our gun club (the Albany Rifle & Pistol Club, or ARPC) and she and I were both local and regional full-auto competitors at the time. As such, we'd usually go through 2,000 - 3,000 rounds of 9mm for our subguns (hers is a full-sized Uzi carbine, mine is an MP5-A3) and would always have to resupply by the end of that season of competition. We no longer compete, but the stockpile hasn't diminished much. (We've also had to maintain somewhat smaller stores of other calibers; 5.56x45 NATO for her M-16, 76.2x51 for my HK G3 and HK-21, not to mention .45 ACP, .40 S&W, .30-06, 12 ga., and an assortment of other calibers for our various self-defense and hunting rounds.)

 

That's one hell of a collection!

 

Thanks! I haven't counted recently, but it's somewhere on the high side of 50 firearms. Compared to many of my Class III friends across the country, my collection is puny. Most of them have collections in the mid- to high-hundreds and several have collections in the thousands of firearms. Many of them (the firearms in those collections) are amazingly exotic.

For a long time, 50-60 of us would come from all over the U.S. and descend on Taos, NM on Labor Day weekend, for a private 3-day machine gun shoot. That's where I got to fire my first M134 mini-gun. (I had the grin surgically removed later that day.) The same person that owned that one also brought a Hotchkiss Rotary Cannon. They made at least three variants of this gun, each with slightly different calibers. I don't recall which one this was, but it was on the high side of 40mm. There were so many other types of Class III guns there, I've long forgotten the specifics. We haven't had this gathering for almost 20 years now, but it was a ball!

 

Have you ever sen "The explosion show"?
I think it's on science channel.
They had a segment on the evolution of rotary guns and got to fire some of them.

On the subject of big guns, one of my NFA friends just managed to acquire a Solothurn S-18/1000. It's a Swiss 20mm anti-tank gun used during WW II.



I don't know where he got it or what he paid for it, but I'm sure that it wasn't cheap! I've wanted one forever. I'm so jealous!
