Sunday night a co-worker who I've known for over 20 years got to barricade himself and his family in his house (he, his wife, and the two oldest kids were armed) while the grocery store 3-4 blocks away was burned and people marched in the streets busting windows and starting fires. Yesterday my father-in-law got to see the peaceful protesters drag the maintenance man of the office building he works in, who was merely trying to clean up the broken windows and damage they'd done with bricks and crude torches (tried to set the building on fire, didn't work), into the street and beaten so badly he's now hospitalized with brain injuries. So both of them are definitely against police violence now, super effective tactics at work.

My coworker and his family are safe, other than his youngest, who is still in elementary school, being pretty traumatized that someone was going to break in the house and try to kill them, or burn it down with them inside it. My FIL's co-worker still has life-threatening injuries.

Whether it is the media's fault we don't hear more stuff like this, or that the leaders of the legit protesters aren't saying it more, I'm not sure. But speeches like his need blasted everywhere.

I watched the news copter footage from around 5:30-6 when they landed and ended the feed. Gov. Cuomo said that NYPD didn't do their job on 6/1, here's the transcript for the NYPD scanner.

I listened to it from about 8:30 - 11:30, protestors walked past my apartment just before 8PM. I'm listening today at 4:50, they are hundreds of people, different groups and they are peaceful.

As someone who has been hunted by drones before (in testing), I should have thought of this. There are other ways that are easier to track people with if that is what was happening. The umbrella could also be used to help avoid the drone too.

However, it was probably used to try and avoid security cameras I would guess.

I did try and find the drone on the public radar websites, but couldn't find it. But I can't say for sure it wasn't up there. I was busy that night, and my computer was slow. And I might not have looked at all the airplanes that were shown.

There seems to be a lot of bored guys or downtrodden criminals who were just waiting for the opportunity to do this. If they have explosives, they aren't part of a peaceful protest or even an angry mob. That is next level. If there needed to be a revolution or civil war, that is when explosives come into play.

Here's a bit of wholesomeness. Obviously don't expect anyone to watch the entire thing, but there is some cool stuff in here around 15:30, 18:00, and 22:00ish.

Basically there is a ton of local coverage about black gangs and Hispanic gangs using all of this rioting as a cover to go shoot and beat each other in Chicago's bad neighborhoods. So this black dude (who apparently is a male stripper who is semi-well known on social media) rides his horse from his neighborhood (which would be considered on the edge of some not very nice black neighborhoods in Chicago) to the Little Village (which is basically the Mexican hood), through some police checkpoints, to show that what is being portrayed on social media is inaccurate. Some pretty cool bits and pieces in there.

At this point we took a knee at the bottom of World Trade Center. The 9/11 memorial is to our backs. We took a knee for 8 minutes and 46 seconds.

When it was done we went back home, on the way home we passed 2 other groups of protestors with hundreds more than we were. It was an emotional Saturday but very fulfilling.

Suppose justice is actually served in this particular case. All four officers are charged appropriately, are convicted, and will absolutely serve enough time in real prisons. A winner.

But what about the root of the problem?

We're always going to imperfect LEOs.
We're always going to have people who like to provoke LEOs.
Many of those situations are going to be white LEOs and people of color.

We're going to see the Blue Shield, even in situations where the actions of the LEOs clearly seem to be excessive.
We're going to see the Black Shield, even in situations where the person abused and/or killed provoked the police. Some black leaders will say let the protests play out, don't use violence to stop illegal activity.

Stopping (more likely somewhat lessening) the Us-Versus-Them stances on both sides will be the tricky part. How?

Conviction goes through. Next comes the lawsuit. Every jurisdiction now realizes they are vulnerable to the lawsuits because of precedence. A big city can absorb a 5 or 10 million dollar hit, but what about a smaller city with only 100 total in the department? A lawsuit would bury the city budget. So now policy and procedure gets rewritten. And if you are outside of your training, your protection dries up.
Are things going to immediately get better, and all problems resolved? No. But money talks. Money is power. And a few lawsuits can have an effect.

There was a situation in Hempstead, Waller County, TX, which is roughly 30 miles from Houston. I'm sure the county will eventually take a huge financial hit, and probably already has just preparing for the lawsuit.

I can only hope that the county Sheriff's Department has cracked down on overstepping, and now stresses knowing when to back off.
