General Rifle for Whitetail Deer ended last weekend. While I can appreciate a good trophy hunt, I prefer to spend my limited hunting time ensuring I get quality meat. That means does and more does. I am happy to say, I accomplished my meat mission halfway through the season.

We used a pop-up blind in a forage field that borders a major river valley in southern Manitoba. The deer would traverse up the valley and come out of the tree-line to enter the field. Usually they seem to wait until last light to do this, but as soon as I was safely in my blind they came out in a group of 3. It was simple than to wait for them to cross the property line, and I had plenty of time to glass and make my selection.

    It's been delicious so far.

    Kind of funny/sad story...

My buddy hunts every year, bow and rifle, and usually bags 3 or 4 deer. (I got some meat last year and made jerky, which was just ok, but I digress)
Though he's seen a few does and some bucks at a distance this year, and his 12 year old son has killed a decent sized spike, he hasn't shot any this season, yet.

So, I was in the kitchen cooking supper last night when I hear a siren from an ambulance. I look out the kitchen window toward the highway, which is about 40 yards away from my trailer, and see the ambulance slow down like it's going to pull into my driveway.
Naturally, I became worried and went outside to scope it out.
Turns out a pick-up hit a deer that was crossing the highway a few yards from my driveway.
It caved in the front of the truck, killed the deer, but otherwise nothing else was hurt. (it was an adult and two children)
There was an ambulance, a big firetruck, two highway patrols, a wrecker and someone from the DoT, plus all the looky-loos.
They spent about an hour and a half assessing everything and just all-around gabbing (if you ask me)

Into this mix comes my deer-hunting buddy.
He lives nearby and gets word of the accident, but not what had happened.
He pulls into my driveway and we watch the goings-on.
After about an hour or so of inactivity, they finally move the DoT truck up near the wrecked truck and two men stoop and pick up the good-sized deer. (which we don't know about at this point, it being dark and all)
When we see it, my buddy lets out a groan and a sigh and says, "Fuck-k-k...".
You could tell he was envious and kinda pissed at the same time, too. :)

I spent a weekend bow hunting this year. I spent two half days in the stand (one afternoon, and one morning), plus one entire day from an hour before sunrise until after sunset. Didn't see a single deer, and it was on property that I regularly hunt and usually always see plenty of deer on. I left very frustrated and headed for home (about a 3 hour drive). Approx 2 miles from my house I passed by (fortunately slowly since I saw them in plenty of time) two does standing right on the white line along side the road. Arrgh!!!

Heading up late Thursday night to hunt Friday and Saturday. Shotgun season in IL is this coming weekend (Fri-Sun) and the weekend after Thanksgiving (Thurs-Sun). Hopefully I come home with something.

Here's a cliffnotes version of what I was going to post earlier.

    **Sensitive animal person warning.**

My buck was 12pts, and he was a BRUISER. A couple of the guys I hunt with (with 70yrs hunting between them) estimated him at 310lbs, 250-260lbs dressed. They don't make whitetails too much bigger than that. It was a bear loading him up on the quad to get him out of the woods.

It was barely 20 minutes in to opening morning for shotgun. I heard him picking his way up the ravine in front of me and about 60-70 yards to my left. So I was looking straight at him when he popped his head out of the brush. At first all I could see was that he had a good rack. He stood there for a second or two, then started forward. Unfortunately there wasn't a good shot through the trees for where he was standing when he first came out, but there were three game trails he could pick from where he was. If he turned right, he'd be going away from me and I wouldn't have a shot. If he turned left, he'd walk right in front of my stand about 15-20 yards away. There was also an angled trail to his left that would lead him about 15 yards behind my stand. He picked the angled trail and started slowly moseying his way along, oblivious to me. I kept my gun on him, and once he got about 5-10 yards down the trail I had a shot. But since he wasn't showing any signs of being wary of me, and he was still walking forward (giving me a better shot with each step), I decided to wait to pull the trigger. I figured if he turned off the trail in the slightest, or if he looked up, I'd shoot immediately.

He gets about 20-25 yards from me and stops. I'm turned in my stand to face him and he's a little to my left and facing to 7-8 o'clock. He glances up right at me, so a quarter second later I pull the trigger. The slug got him in his left shoulder and exited about halfway back and on his left side. It tore through both lungs, so he only made it about 50 yards before he dropped, never leaving my sight.

Nice Borla , I don't go hunting but the men in the family have forever. We have a weird thing in our counties. On the south side you can use shot gun, on the north side it is rifles. I always feel like I need to duck driving to work those two weeks, hoping those hunters don't loose their way. I have hit two in the 15 years driving through the woods. lol But again nice one you got there!

I picked him up from the butcher tonight. They are working all hours of the day/night to process deer right now. Mine was the last one they accepted and the first one they processed. I got back 120lbs of usable meat after processing! The butcher said it was the thickest, meatiest deer he's ever processed. We had part of a backstrap tonight for dinner (they looked like beef loins, lol) and it was awesome. Very mild and very tender.
